Planet Zoo 2 Guide#
Planet Zoo 2 is the full sequel to Planet Zoo, the management sim that Frontier Developments released for PC in November 2019. Developed and published by the UK studio, the sequel unlocked simultaneously worldwide on October 13, 2026 at 14:00 UTC (22:00 Beijing time) for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a cloud version via NVIDIA GeForce NOW — the first time the franchise has debuted on all platforms at once. Frontier has confirmed there are no plans for last-gen consoles or macOS.
The sequel pushes the boundaries of zoo management much further outward. Species count tops 130, and the series gets flying birds and fully aquatic animals for the first time. A new Wildlife Reserve system extends conservation beyond the park fences, a four-season cycle reshapes temperature, vegetation, and breeding rhythms, and the new Animal Brain simulation has animals reacting dynamically to weather, seasons, predators, mood, and neighbors. Metacritic currently sits at 85 for PC and PS5, while Steam player reviews are “Mostly Positive” at roughly 70% as of the October 15, 2026 research date.
This guide hub is built for everyone from first-time players to management sim veterans, covering animal welfare and the Thriving system, the two new exhibit types (aquariums and aviaries), wildlife reserves and animal releases, building tools and the Frontier Workshop, all four game modes, economy and staff management, and operational troubleshooting. Version details, species lists, and mechanics are verified against official sources; where in-game numbers (wages, ticket prices, space requirements) have not been published, we defer to the in-game Zoopedia and the actual interface rather than guess.

Four Major New Systems#
The zoo management framework built up in the first game gets a major expansion here, and the new content breaks down into four main threads:
- Flying and swimming animals: The series adds flying birds and fully aquatic species for the first time. Aviaries are built with fences, support poles, and dynamic grid roofing — visitors can even walk underneath a passing flock. Aquariums introduce water temperature, salinity, filtration, and cleaning as brand-new management dimensions, plus real-time underwater terrain sculpting without draining the tank.
- Wildlife Reserves: Conservation no longer stops at the park fence. Players take on global conservation projects, clear pollutants and invasive plant species, build research networks, and release eligible animals into customizable wilderness areas — and can drive a research vehicle into the reserve for field observation.
- Four seasons: Spring, summer, autumn, and winter change temperature, vegetation, breeding rhythms, shelter use, and energy needs. Each biome gets weather matching its climate, so heaters, coolers, and similar equipment should be prepared in advance.
- Animal Brain: Animals react dynamically to weather, seasons, predators, mood, and neighboring species, developing their own daily routines — welfare is no longer just a row of bars, but something you can read directly from behavior.
On top of that, the welfare system adds a Thriving tier above baseline happiness: research species and build naturalistic, well-enriched habitats, and animals in a thriving state live longer and earn more guest donations.
