XCOM 2 Guide#
XCOM 2 is a turn-based strategy and tactics game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K. The story picks up twenty years after the ending of XCOM: Enemy Unknown: humanity has surrendered, and the alien-run ADVENT coalition rules Earth in the name of “order and prosperity.” You lead a rebuilt XCOM guerrilla force, using guerrilla tactics, base management, and technology research to overthrow alien rule. The in-game campaign begins on February 28, 2035.
Every piece of baseline information in this section was written against a fact sheet verified online on October 10, 2026. Anything the fact sheet does not cover — exact unit stats, complete skill trees, per-achievement unlock criteria — is explicitly marked “not covered” on the relevant page; this site does not speculate.

Core Gameplay Loop#
The appeal of XCOM 2 rests on three interlocking loops. Understand these three and you understand what the game actually asks of you:
- Tactical layer: turn-based squad combat. Each soldier gets 2 action points per turn; cover comes in two grades, half cover and full cover; Overwatch locks down sightlines; Concealment lets you set up a full-squad ambush. Hit chance is a percentage roll determined by weapon accuracy, the target’s cover defense, height advantage, and status effects.
- Campaign layer: aboard the mobile base Avenger, you clear out compartments, build facilities, schedule research and soldier training, and contact resistance regions around the world for supplies, intel, and personnel.
- Strategic pressure: the aliens’ Avatar Project advances continuously, and if the bar fills the campaign is lost outright. You slow it down by raiding alien facilities, which forces every mission to be weighed as a trade between “reward” and “time.”
Gear progression runs through three tiers: Conventional → Magnetic → Beam/Plasma. An assault rifle, for example, goes from 3-5 damage to a magnetic rifle at 5-7, then to a plasma rifle at 7-9.

Classes at a Glance#
The base game has 5 core classes; War of the Chosen adds 3 hero classes, and Shen’s Last Gift adds the mechanical soldier SPARK.
| Class | Primary weapon | Secondary weapon / partner | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranger | Shotgun | Sword (Sword → Arc Blade → Fusion Blade) | Base game |
| Sharpshooter | Sniper rifle | Pistol | Base game |
| Specialist | Assault rifle | GREMLIN drone | Base game |
| Grenadier | Cannon | Grenade launcher | Base game |
| Psi Operative | Assault rifle | Psi Amp | Base game, trained in the Psi Lab |
| Reaper | Vektor sniper rifle | Claymore | War of the Chosen |
| Skirmisher | Bullpup | Ripjack | War of the Chosen |
| Templar | Gauntlet | Autopistol | War of the Chosen |
| SPARK | Heavy autocannon | BIT | Shen’s Last Gift |
Difficulty and Modes#
| Difficulty | Verified differences |
|---|---|
| Rookie | At most 5 enemies attack on screen at once; your rookies gain +2 HP and +10 Will |
| Veteran | Your hit chance ×1.1 |
| Commander | No hidden hit chance modifier |
| Legend | No tutorial; slower research; no hidden hit chance modifier |
All four difficulties can be changed at any time (which may affect achievements); the optional Ironman mode is also available. The widely repeated claim of “Veteran -5%, Commander -10%, Legend -15% hit modifiers” has no source — treat this table as authoritative.
Enemy Roster at a Glance#
| Faction | Units |
|---|---|
| ADVENT forces | Trooper, Officer, Stun Lancer, Shieldbearer, Purifier (WOTC), Priest (WOTC), MEC, Turret, General (appears in the final mission) |
| Alien units | Sectoid, Viper, Muton, Berserker, Chryssalid, Faceless, Archon, Andromedon, Codex, Gatekeeper, Sectopod, Avatar (final boss) |
| Boss-tier | Alien Rulers ×3 (Alien Hunters DLC): Viper King, Berserker Queen, Archon Queen; Chosen ×3 (WOTC): Assassin, Hunter, Warlock |
Note: the “Floater” that shows up in older guides comes from the previous game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and does not exist here. The enemy mechanical units in this game are the ADVENT MEC, Turret, and Sectopod.
Platform Differences at a Glance#
| Platform | Key differences |
|---|---|
| Steam (Windows) | 88 achievements; 1v1 multiplayer and Challenge Mode were shut down and removed on March 28, 2022 |
| macOS / Linux | Ported by Feral Interactive; multiplayer is unaffected by the shutdown above |
| PS4 / Xbox One | Console versions developed by The Workshop; the Xbox version has 80 achievements (no Tactical Legacy Pack) |
| Switch | XCOM 2 Collection rather than a straight port of the base game; includes all 5 DLCs and supports Chinese |
| iOS / Android | Mobile versions, released November 2020 and July 2021 respectively |
Three Questions for New Players#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is the game hard? | Yes. Hit chance is a probability roll, soldier deaths are permanent losses, and the Avatar Project adds time pressure; but four difficulty tiers and the optional Ironman mode let you set your own pace. |
| Which difficulty should I start on? | Editor’s suggestion: start on Veteran (the ×1.1 hit modifier gives you a safety net), then move up to Commander once you know the systems. This is an editorial suggestion, not an official recommendation. |
| How long is it? | Main story about 33 hours, main story plus side content about 48 hours, completionist about 89.5 hours; with War of the Chosen installed, the main story runs about 35.5 hours. |
Glossary#
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Avatar Project | The aliens’ victory countdown; if the bar fills the campaign is lost outright, and raiding alien facilities slows it down |
| Avenger | The mobile base converted from an alien transport, with 12 compartments that can be cleared and rebuilt (4 rows × 3 columns) |
| Overwatch | Set up a gun after ending your actions; fires automatically when enemies move |
| Concealment | Undetected state, allows setting up ambushes |
| Guerrilla Tactics School | An Avenger facility that provides squad size upgrades and soldier training |
