Team Comps & Builds#

Team building in Wuthering Waves comes down to one thing: using the concerto rotation to chain three Resonators’ mechanics together. This page covers the universal team framework, which sonata set fits which playstyle, and gear references for the standard five-stars. All tiering is based on the current version’s meta — treat live experience as the final word as patches roll.

The Team Framework: Three Slots#

Slot Job Typical Traits
Main DPS Stays on field, carries most of the team’s damage High basic/charged attack multipliers; kit built around damage
Sub-DPS Swaps in for one burst rotation, then hands off Outro Skill carries buffs or damage
Support / Healer Provides healing, shields, or attack buffs A staple of Rejuvenating Glow and Moonlit Clouds

The basic three-person loop: support sets up buffs → sub-DPS outro-hands off → main DPS intro-swaps in to clean up. Rotation quality ties into the concerto mechanics detailed on the Combat System page.

Sonata Sets and Who They Fit#

One criterion decides set choice: does the 5-piece trigger condition match the character’s damage pattern? The nine 1.0 sonata sets:

Set Best For 5-Piece Trigger
Freezing Frost Glacio main DPS Basic or charged attack hits stack
Molten Rift Fusion main DPS Resonance Skill hits
Void Thunder Electro main DPS Charged attack or Resonance Skill stacks
Sierra Gale Aero main DPS Intro Skill entrance
Celestial Light Spectro main DPS Intro Skill entrance
Sun-sinking Eclipse Havoc main DPS Basic or charged attack stacks
Rejuvenating Glow Healer slot Triggers team-wide attack buff on healing allies
Moonlit Clouds Sub-DPS / utility Outro Skill buffs the next Resonator’s attack
Lingering Tunes On-field DPS Stacks attack while on field; Outro Skill damage +60%

The full effect tables live on the Echo System page.

Set Effect Details: 2-Piece Bonuses and Stacking#

The table above answers “who uses which set”; this one adds “what each set actually gives” — 2-piece fixed bonuses plus 5-piece values, stacks, and durations:

Set 2-Piece 5-Piece
Freezing Frost Glacio damage +10% Glacio damage +10% on basic/charged attacks, 3 stacks, 15s
Molten Rift — Fusion damage +30% on Resonance Skill, 15s
Void Thunder Electro damage +10% Charged attack or Resonance Skill each grant a stack of Electro damage +15%, 2 stacks
Sierra Gale — Aero damage +30% on Intro Skill entrance, 15s
Celestial Light — Spectro damage +30% on Intro Skill entrance, 15s
Sun-sinking Eclipse — Havoc damage +7.5% on basic/charged attacks, 4 stacks, 15s
Rejuvenating Glow Healing +10% Team attack +15% for 30s when healing allies
Moonlit Clouds Energy Regen +10% Next Resonator’s attack +22.5% for 15s after an Outro Skill
Lingering Tunes Attack +10% Own attack +5% every 1.5s on field (max 4 stacks); Outro Skill damage +60%

Where a 2-piece value is marked “—”, we haven’t verified it set-by-set; the in-game set description is the authority.

Reading the table from a team angle: every DPS set’s 5-piece binds to one of three triggers — basic/charged attacks, Resonance Skill, or Intro entrance — and must line up with the main DPS’s damage pattern. Support sets (Rejuvenating Glow, Moonlit Clouds) benefit the whole team or the next Resonator in, so they survive swaps and naturally suit handoff slots.

Standard Five-Star Gear Reference#

The five standard-banner five-stars have been available since 1.0, and their build directions are fairly fixed:

Character Element / Weapon Set Direction Weapon Reference
Calcharo Electro / Broadblade Void Thunder Lustrous Razor (standard 5-star broadblade, attack/energy); Jiyan’s sig Verdant Summit or Jinhsi’s sig Ages of Harvest also work
Verina Spectro / Rectifier Healer support —
Jianxin Aero / Gauntlets Shield support Abyss Surges (5-star gauntlets)
Encore Fusion / Rectifier Fusion DPS —
Lingyang Glacio / Gauntlets Glacio DPS —

Blank weapon cells mean no clearly-documented go-to weapon was verifiable — we won’t fill in guesses; judge by how a weapon’s skill meshes with the character’s kit.

One plannable rule on weapon sourcing: the weapon event banner and the standard weapon banner are separate pools, and the standard weapon banner lets you pick a 5-star weapon with guaranteed results — the cheapest targeted route when completing a standard 5-star like Lustrous Razor.

Calcharo Build Example#

Calcharo (Electro / Broadblade) is the standard five-stars’ main-DPS poster child, with well-documented gearing:

  • Echoes: Void Thunder 5-piece — its stacking Electro on charged attacks and Resonance Skills matches Calcharo’s rotation.
  • Weapon: the standard 5-star broadblade Lustrous Razor (attack/energy) is the usual pick; the limited sigs Verdant Summit and Ages of Harvest also fit.
  • Teammates: a sub-DPS with outro buffs plus a healer completes the standard rotation.
  • Healer of choice: Verina (Spectro / Rectifier) is the standard healer — pair with Rejuvenating Glow 5-piece for team attack +15% on heals; the 4-star Baizhi (Glacio / Rectifier) also covers the role.
  • Access cost: Calcharo comes from the standard banner and his usual weapon is standard too — a main DPS with the clearest acquisition path, no limited pulls required.

Team-Building Principles#

  • Element is not a team criterion: Wuthering Waves has no elemental weakness system — don’t assemble teams “for counters.” The only resistance rule: avoid a main DPS sharing the enemy’s element; details on the Combat System page.
  • Mechanics synergy first: who catches the outro buff and how big the intro burst is decides a team’s ceiling.
  • Focus resources: max out the main DPS first (level, skills, echoes, weapon — four tracks), then invest in supports. Fastest way to a finished team.

Echo Cost and Build Order#

The practical gearing order:

  1. Complete the main DPS’s 5-piece set first, even with mediocre substats — set effects outweigh loose-piece stats by miles.
  2. After Data Bank level 9 unlocks the full 12-point cost budget, fill it as 4+3+3+1+1.
  3. Gradually replace loose pieces with better substats last.

Two notes: the starting budget is only 8 points, so don’t force perfection early — secure the 4-cost main echo and the 5-piece first; Data Bank keeps leveling past 9 and the budget cap grows with it, allowing more flexible layouts later.

The budget growth track is on the Echo System page; 4-cost echoes mainly come from world bosses (a Tsunami-class Dreamless echo is 4-cost) — see the Boss Guide and Material Domains pages.

Common Team-Building Mistakes#

Mistake Correction
Assembling teams “for elemental counters” No elemental weakness system exists — only same-element resistance
Three damage-dealers, no healer Deep Tower’s hard floors won’t hold without healing and buffs
Stacking substats before completing sets Set effects first; substats are a late-game project
Spreading resources across everyone Concentrate on one main DPS, then widen
Blindly copying whale comps Other people’s teams rest on their rosters and echo inventories — audit your own first

Team Goals by Stage#

Stage Goal
Early game Free characters + beginner-banner five-star into a workable first team
Mid game Fix your main DPS, build the sub-DPS and support around their mechanics
Deep Tower era Second and third teams rotating, elements diversified
Long term Refresh teams with each version’s new Resonators; retire outdated combos

What the Tower and Holographics Demand#

  • Tower of Adversity: unlocks at Union Level 15, split into Stable, Experimental, Overdrive, and Hazard zones. The first three zones’ rewards are one-time; the Hazard zone resets about every 28 days and grows to 4 floors from version 2.6. The current Vigor system tracks each Resonator’s entries per zone independently — you need several rotating teams, not one team grinding everything, which is exactly why the table’s “Deep Tower era” calls for two or three rosters.
  • Holographic Project: solo timed challenges against specific bosses at 6 difficulty levels each, added over versions. It prizes single-core depth (your main DPS’s echo and weapon quality) over roster width — the yardstick for whether your main DPS is truly finished.

Tower zone rules and rewards are on the Endgame page; weekly boss strategies on the Boss Guide page.

A Note on Tier Lists#

This page deliberately ships no cross-version fixed strength ratings. The reason is simple: every version adds new Resonators (3.7 alone brought two new 5-star Electro Resonators, Hsin and Suoming), so any “eternal T0” list rots fast. Judge a character by three things:

  1. Whether the kit fits your hands.
  2. Whether your roster has an outro partner that combos with them.
  3. Which sonata set your echo inventory leans toward.

The full element/weapon framework is on the Characters page; skill upgrade resource planning on the Skills page; endgame roster-width demands on the Endgame page.
