Wuthering Waves Guide#
Wuthering Waves is an open-world action RPG developed and self-published by KURO GAMES. Built on Unreal Engine 4, it follows a free-to-play model with gacha monetization. Producer Solon Lee also serves as game director. The game launched its global open beta on May 23, 2024 (May 22 in the Americas due to time zones), debuting on PC, iOS and Android before gradually expanding to consoles and additional storefronts.
The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed and then reborn after the Lament. Players take on the role of the Rover, an amnesiac wanderer who travels across Solaris alongside Resonators capable of attuning to frequencies, uncovering the truth behind the world’s destruction.

Core Gameplay Loop#
Real-Time Action Combat#
Combat revolves around swapping between a three-Resonator team in real time. Each Resonator has six categories of abilities: Basic Attack, Resonance Skill, Resonance Liberation, Resonance Circuit, Intro Skill and Outro Skill. Landing attacks accumulates Concerto Energy; once it is full, swapping characters triggers an Intro entrance and an Outro exit, forming a rolling damage loop. Perfect dodges and parries offer high-risk, high-reward defensive options.
Worth noting: Wuthering Waves has no elemental counters or elemental reaction system. None of the six elements (Fusion, Glacio, Aero, Electro, Spectro, Havoc) holds a damage multiplier over another, so team building only needs to avoid the resistance penalty of running the same element as the enemy.
The Echo System#
Echoes are the most distinctive progression system in Wuthering Waves. Defeating illusions in the open world gives you a chance at their Echo; once equipped, an Echo provides stat bonuses and can also be released as an active skill. Echoes are budgeted by Cost (1-4), starting at 8 points, with the full standard 12-point loadout (4+3+3+1+1) unlocked once your Data Bank reaches level 9. Equipping 2 or 5 pieces of the same set activates its Sonata effects.
Resonator Progression#
More than 58 characters are playable (wuthering.gg counts 61, while game8.co’s August 2026 list has 58 — the tallies use different criteria). Each Resonator is bound to one element and one weapon type, spanning five weapons: Broadblade, Sword, Pistols, Gauntlets and Rectifier. Progression runs along five tracks: level, ascension, skill upgrades, weapons and Echoes.
Open-World Exploration#
Traversal includes running, climbing, swimming and grappling. World difficulty is governed by the SOL3 Phase system, which steps up roughly once every 10 Union Levels. The wilderness is populated with collectibles such as Sonance Caskets, along with Calamity-class world bosses and assorted challenges.
Version Update Cadence#
Wuthering Waves rolls out a major version roughly every 35-42 days (the popular “one big patch every six weeks” line only covers the upper bound). The current version 3.7, “Prism’s Illusion, Heart’s Illumination,” went live on September 30, 2026, adding two new five-star Electro Resonators, Hsin and Suoming, plus the new Simulacrum Nexus map. Version 3.6 before it ran from August 20 to September 30, 2026 — 42 days.
