Honkai: Star Rail Guide#
Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based role-playing game developed by miHoYo and released worldwide under the HoYoverse brand on April 26, 2023. You play the Trailblazer, riding the Astral Express across the stars to resolve the Stellaron crises of each world the train reaches. The game blends science fiction and fantasy, with a substantial story, tactical turn-based combat, and deep character progression systems.
This hub condenses what matters in practice: how Weakness Break and Skill Points actually shape a fight, how the Warp pity rules work, what each world contributes to the story, and where a daily routine should go.
Story Background#
The story begins on the space station Herta, where the protagonist wakes up and discovers that a Stellaron has been implanted in their body. With help from March 7th and Dan Heng, the Trailblazer joins the Astral Express and sets out with the crew. The train departs the space station and arrives in turn at Jarilo-VI (Belobog), the Xianzhou Luofu, and Penacony. Every world has its own civilization and its own crisis, and the Stellaron sits at the root of them all. As the plot advances, the game gradually reveals the Aeons, Nanook of the Destruction, and the pasts of each crew member.
Core Gameplay#
Turn-Based Combat#
Combat follows the classic turn-based model, with a team of four characters. Each character has a Basic ATK, a Skill, an Ultimate, and a Talent. The most important mechanic is Weakness Break: attacking an enemy’s weakness with the matching type reduces its Toughness, and once the gauge breaks, the enemy suffers an extra effect and its action is delayed.
Character Progression#
Progression covers levels, Traces (the skill tree), Eidolons, Light Cones, and Relics. Traces provide active skills and passive bonuses; Eidolons come from pulling duplicate copies of a character. Light Cones act as the character’s weapon, while Relics fill the artifact slot, split into Cavern Relics and Planar Ornaments.
The Warp System#
Characters and Light Cones are obtained through the Warp (gacha) system. Warps come in three flavors: the standard banner, the Character Event Warp, and the Light Cone Event Warp. Every ten Warps guarantee a 4-star, and every ninety guarantee a 5-star. The character banner runs on the well-known 50/50 rule: lose it once, and the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the current featured character.
The Worlds#
Herta Space Station — the game’s starting location, a research facility built by Herta, a member of the Genius Society. The station is divided into the Master Control Zone, the Base Zone, and the Storage Zone, and doubles as the tutorial area where players learn the basics.
Jarilo-VI — a planet locked in an eternal winter caused by a Stellaron. Its city, Belobog, is split into an Overworld and an Underworld (Boulder Town). The story here centers on the standoff between the Wildfire organization and the Guardian Cocolia.
The Xianzhou Luofu — one of the six flagship ships of the Xianzhou Alliance, blending Chinese sci-fi with xianxia style. The story revolves around the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus, the Sedition of Imbibitor Lunae, and Phantylia’s schemes.
Penacony — the land of dreams, once an interstellar prison, later remade by The Family into a dreamlike resort. It is the main stage of the Penacony version arc, filled with puzzles where dreams and reality intertwine.
Character Guide#
The game has a large playable roster, divided into seven Paths (Destruction, The Hunt, Erudition, Harmony, Nihility, Preservation, Abundance) and seven damage types (Physical, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Quantum, Imaginary). Every character has a distinct role and kit.
Popular picks include Jingliu (Destruction, Ice), Dan Heng • Imbibitor Lunae (Destruction, Imaginary), Bronya (Harmony, Wind), Fu Xuan (Preservation, Quantum), Luocha (Abundance, Imaginary), and Firefly (Destruction, Fire).
Combat System Breakdown#
Combat strategy revolves around type matchups and Weakness Break. Each enemy has up to three weakness types; attacking with a matching type chips away at Toughness. Breaking a weakness deals Break Damage and pushes the enemy’s action back, and each type’s break effect differs:
- Physical — extra Physical damage plus a Bleed state
- Fire — continuous burn damage over time
- Ice — freezes the enemy and stops it from acting
- Lightning — deals Shock damage
- Wind — deals Wind Shear damage
- Quantum — applies Entanglement, which adds extra damage
- Imaginary — applies Imprisonment, sharply delaying the enemy’s actions
The Astral Express Crew#
The core crew is the Trailblazer (you), March 7th, Dan Heng, Himeko, and Welt. Each fills a different role on the journey, and all of them drive the story forward.
Beyond the crew, the Stellaron Hunters (Kafka, Silver Wolf, Blade, Firefly) and Herta also play major roles — not permanent Express residents, but closely tied to the crew’s journey.
Simulated Universe#
The Simulated Universe is one of the game’s most important permanent modes, built on roguelike elements. You choose Blessings and Curios to strengthen your team and clear randomly generated stages. It is also a steady source of Stellar Jade and Planar Ornaments.
Systems and Features#
Nameless Honor — a battle-pass style system with a free track and a paid track.
Friends — borrow a friend’s support character to help in battle.
Paths — every character belongs to one Path, which determines their combat role.
Eidolons — duplicates of the same character unlock Eidolons, which grant additional ability bonuses.
FAQ#
Is the game free? Yes. The game is free to download with optional purchases inside, and all story content can be experienced for free.
How should a new player start? Follow the main story’s Trailblaze Missions and raise your Trailblaze Level as fast as possible to unlock more features. Prioritize Daily Training and the Simulated Universe.
How do you build a team? The standard template is main DPS + support + survival slot + secondary DPS/support. Adjust the composition to the enemy’s weakness types.
How should Stellar Jade be spent? Stellar Jade converts into Star Rail Passes and Star Rail Special Passes. Spend it on limited Character Event Warps first.
What is Equilibrium Level? Equilibrium Level governs world level and enemy strength; raising it improves drop rewards, and it can be lowered manually.
What should newcomers farm first? Raise character levels and Trace levels first, then focus on Relic farming after Trailblaze Level 40.
Version Content#
The game updates regularly, with one version lasting roughly six weeks. Updates bring new characters, new story, new events, and new permanent modes. Major version events usually pay out large amounts of Stellar Jade and progression materials.

Warp System In Depth#
Banner Types#
Warps split into three categories: standard, limited character, and limited Light Cone. Limited character banners rotate on a two-version cycle, and each featured character carries an independent rate-up. The Light Cone banner tracks pity separately from the character banner; neither affects the other.
Pity and the 50/50#
Every ten Warps guarantee a 4-star, and every ninety guarantee a 5-star. On the limited character banner, losing the 50/50 means the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the current featured character — the pity and 50/50 rules everyone talks about. Pity counts do not reset between versions, so stockpiling tickets and pulling later works fine.
Planning Your Gacha Resources#
Stellar Jade, Star Rail Passes, and Star Rail Special Passes are the core pulling resources. Daily Missions, Simulated Universe clears, version events, and abyss-style modes are the reliable sources of Stellar Jade. Concentrate your resources on the limited characters your teams actually need, rather than pulling out of power anxiety.
Combat Mechanics, Further Depth#
Toughness Gauge and Break#
Attacking a weakness reduces Toughness; at zero, the enemy is broken, its action is delayed, and it takes Break Damage. Each type’s break effect has its own emphasis, and targeting weaknesses correctly lowers the difficulty of any fight substantially.
Skill Points#
Skill Points are shared across the team and cap at five. Basic ATKs restore one point; Skills consume one. Allocating Skill Points so that your damage dealers never stall is the core of turn-based strategy here.
Energy and Ultimates#
Ultimates are cast by accumulating Energy and ignore turn order — they can be inserted at any time. Casting at full Energy just before a character is about to act lets that character take two consecutive turns, a standard trick.
Action Bar and Speed#
Turn order is determined by Speed: the faster a unit, the more often it acts. Tuning a support’s Speed above your main DPS ensures buffs are applied before the damage turns. Speed thresholds matter mainly for winning action counts in the first round.
Exploration Systems#
Map Collection#
Every map holds a fixed number of chests and destructible objects worth Stellar Jade and materials. Hidden chests, Warp Trotters, and puzzles together form the bulk of exploration content.
Puzzle Play#
Each world has its own puzzle style: match-3 tiles on the Space Station, cube puzzles in Belobog, magic cubes on the Xianzhou, and dream mazes in Penacony. Puzzle rewards are mostly Stellar Jade and achievements, well suited to short daily sessions.
The Daily Loop#
Daily Missions, spending Trailblaze Power, the Simulated Universe, and weekly bosses form a stable daily rhythm. Clearing daily tasks accumulates Stellar Jade and progression materials, and the gap compounds the longer you keep at it.
Resource Economy#
Stellar Jade, Credits, EXP books, and assorted materials make up the resource system. Trailblaze Power gates most progression materials, so priorities matter: weekly bosses and double-drop events first, ascension materials next, and Relic farming concentrated in the late game.
Beginner Route#
In the early game, push the main story and prioritize unlocking teleport points and mode entrances. On progression, concentrate on one main DPS first; once supports and a survival slot are filled out, expand gradually toward a second team. Do not spread early resources across many characters — specializing in one team makes the campaign experience noticeably smoother.
