Beginner’s Guide#

Welcome Aboard the Astral Express#

Welcome, Trailblazer. This beginner guide focuses only on the three things that matter most early on: how to spend Trailblaze Power, how to save Stellar Jade, and how to build your team. Numbers reflect the current version; when in doubt, the in-game descriptions are authoritative.

Starter Characters#

Follow the main story and you’ll get Dan Heng, March 7th, Serval and Natasha in sequence. Natasha is the only free healer in the early game, and March 7th provides a single-target shield plus Ice crowd control — both are routinely undervalued by beginners, so invest in them early.

The main character (the Trailblazer) switches Paths as the story progresses and can deal damage or sustain, making them the most flexible piece of the puzzle. Add the first 5-star character you pull from the Warp, and your first complete four-person team is set.

Trailblaze Level and Trailblaze EXP#

Trailblaze Level is the core measure of account progress: new features, higher dungeon difficulties and Equilibrium Level quests all unlock at Trailblaze Level milestones.

  • Spending Trailblaze Power always grants Trailblaze EXP alongside it — farming material dungeons is itself part of leveling up. There is no such thing as “losing EXP by farming”.
  • The main sources of Trailblaze EXP, in order: main and side quests, Daily Training, and dungeons run with Trailblaze Power.
  • When you hit a level gate, prioritize side quests, treasure chests and achievements, and max out the weekly modes instead of waiting for EXP to trickle in.

The Trailblaze Power System#

Trailblaze Power caps how many growth resources you can farm each day and is the first system a beginner should understand.

Regeneration Rate and Cap#

  • Regeneration: 1 point per 6 minutes — 10 points per hour, 240 points per day.
  • Current cap: 300 points. The cap has been raised three times — 180 at launch, 240 in version 1.3, and 300 since version 3.0.
  • Refilling from 0 takes 30 hours, so clearing it every other day won’t overflow much — but clear it daily anyway; don’t let production idle.

Reserved Trailblaze Power#

Once normal Trailblaze Power hits the 300 cap, the overflow converts into Reserved Trailblaze Power:

  • Accumulation: 1 point per 18 minutes, roughly 80 per day — half the normal rate.
  • Reserve cap: 2400 points; at a normal play pace you’ll almost never fill it. Treat it as a spill pool that prevents waste.
  • Withdrawal rules: withdrawn 1:1 with no loss, up to 300 points at a time.
  • Fuel directly restores Trailblaze Power: 1 Fuel = 60 points. Save it for when you urgently need materials or during event buff windows.

Trailblaze Power Costs#

There are two Calyxes: the Golden Calyx, which drops Credits and character EXP materials, and the Crimson Calyx, which drops Trace level-up materials. Both charge per wave.

Dungeon Cost per run Main drops
Golden Calyx 10/wave, up to six waves per cycle (60 total) Credits, character EXP materials
Crimson Calyx 10/wave Trace materials
Cavern of Corrosion 40 Relics
Stagnant Shadow 30 Character ascension materials
Echo of War 30, first 3 clears weekly grant bonus rewards Weekly boss trace materials
Ornament Extraction 40 (consumes 1 Immersifier) Planar Ornaments

The Simulated Universe Costs Nothing#

The Simulated Universe and Divergent Universe consume no Trailblaze Power — run them any time. Maxing the weekly Simulated Universe points each week is a zero-cost source of Stellar Jade and growth materials; build this habit from day one.

Spending Priority#

Recommended beginner order: Stagnant Shadows and the Crimson Calyx to build up your characters → Golden Calyx for Credits and EXP when the story gates you → Cavern of Corrosion only after your Equilibrium Level is high and your core team is formed. Relic substats are wildly random; dumping Trailblaze Power into Caverns before your roster is built is the most common beginner waste.

The Warp System Explained#

Warp Types#

  • Departure Warp: the beginner-exclusive banner guarantees a 5-star character within a limited number of pulls, at a discount. Make maxing it your very first order of business; the banner closes once completed. Exact pull count per the in-game display.
  • Standard Warp: uses Star Rail Passes to pull standard 5-star characters and Light Cones. Don’t exchange Stellar Jade for Star Rail Passes.
  • Event Warp: uses Star Rail Special Passes, split into character and Light Cone banners, with the featured character or Light Cone available for a limited time.

Pity Mechanics#

  • Character banner: when a 5-star appears, there’s a 50% chance it’s the featured character (soft pity); if you lose the 50/50, the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured one (guaranteed pity).
  • Light Cone banner: when a 5-star appears, there’s a 75% chance it’s the featured Light Cone.
  • Pity counts carry across banners — switching banners doesn’t reset them; exact hard-pity pull counts per the in-game display.

Where Stellar Jade Comes From#

Stellar Jade is the universal Warp currency. Main sources:

  • Daily Training: settles every day — your bread and butter in the early game.
  • Main story, side quests, achievements and exploration chests: one-time rewards, plentiful while you’re opening up the map.
  • Forgotten Hall (Memory of Chaos), Pure Fiction and Apocalyptic Shadow: endgame modes that pay out each cycle.
  • Version and web events: limited-time rewards — don’t miss them.
  • Nameless Honor (the monthly pass): even the free track grants Stellar Jade; the paid track grants more.

F2P players who don’t waste their pulls can comfortably save up one or more 10-pulls per version, though the exact amount floats with each patch’s events.

Planning Your Pull Resources#

Resource Recommended use Priority
Stellar Jade Exchange all for Special Passes, spend only on featured character banners Highest
Star Rail Special Pass Featured character banners Highest
Star Rail Pass Standard banner only, and only free ones Low
Nameless Honor Great value for long-term players; decide by budget Optional

Featured character strength fluctuates by patch; beginners don’t need to chase full collection. Sustain characters (healers, shielders) are chronically undervalued — a team that survives deals damage. Heavy spenders aside, avoid pouring Stellar Jade into Light Cone banners; the gap between 4★ cones and signature cones can mostly be closed with relic substats.

Daily and Weekly Checklist#

Daily List#

Resets at 4 AM (server time). Recommended order:

  1. Claim Daily Training rewards — the most stable Stellar Jade source.
  2. Clear Trailblaze Power, farming dungeons in the priority above.
  3. Refresh Assignments: durations run 4-20 hours — 20 hours is the best value; assigned characters can still fight normally, so no need to pull your main team off duty.
  4. If your Reserved Trailblaze Power has stock, withdraw as needed.

Weekly List#

  • Max out the weekly Simulated Universe points.
  • Clear the first 3 Echo of War runs each week (bonus rewards); runs beyond 3 only give base rewards.
  • Complete the Nameless Honor weekly missions — they feed your monthly pass progress and your pull income.

The Monthly Shops: Embers and Starlight#

Warping generates two exchange currencies; both shops refresh monthly:

  • Undying Ember: exchange for Warp tickets (Special and Standard Passes) and Tracks of Destiny. Max out the warp tickets first — it’s a stable free source of pulls for long-term players.
  • Undying Starlight: exchange for the monthly rotating 4-star stock; buy only when a 4-star character or key Light Cone fills a hole in your roster.

Basic Combat Concepts#

  • Speed and the action bar: speed decides turn order; the action bar shows each unit’s progress. In a turn-based game, acting first is damage tempo.
  • Skill Points (SP): skills consume them, basic attacks restore them; shared by the whole team, capped at 5. Using Techniques pre-fight to bank points and balancing income mid-fight is the first rhythm a beginner should master.
  • Ultimate: once energy is full it can be inserted at any time without waiting for the turn order; don’t waste overkill damage on nearly-dead enemies.
  • Technique: a pre-battle special skill used for opening toughness damage, healing or banking SP. Planning Technique uses while exploring greatly reduces combat pressure.
  • Weakness Break: attack with the enemy’s weakness type to chip the toughness bar; breaking triggers the type’s status effect and delays the enemy. Type coverage matters more than raw stats when building a team.

Early Resource Allocation#

Focus on one team of four; avoid spreading evenly: the main DPS gets max level, Light Cone and key traces first; supports get their key traces; the sustain’s survival skills come first.

The free-character foundation: Natasha (healing), March 7th (shields), Serval (AoE), Dan Heng (single target), the Trailblazer (switchable Paths) — add your first pulled 5-star and team one is done.

Slot Job Free options
Main DPS Core damage Your first pulled 5-star, Dan Heng
Sub-DPS/support AoE or buffs Serval, March 7th
Sustain Healing or shields Natasha, March 7th
Flex slot Cover enemy weaknesses Trailblazer

Team-building core principle: the wider your type coverage the better — at minimum you should be able to hit two or more weaknesses of common enemies; the team must include a healer or shielder. No amount of damage survives a fully wounded squad.

Early Progression Route#

Stage One: Push the Main Story to Jarilo-VI#

Follow the main story; most features unlock along the way. The focus here is learning turn-based combat: reading the action bar, managing SP, spotting enemy weaknesses. Story EXP is plenty for leveling — no need to grind EXP dungeons.

Stage Two: Unlock the Simulated Universe#

Once unlocked, max the weekly points reward first. Low-difficulty speedruns are perfectly fine — eat the weekly points clean before studying each world’s path combos.

Stage Three: Equilibrium Level Breakthroughs#

Completing the trial missions raises your Equilibrium Level: dungeon drops improve, but enemy levels and HP rise too. Before breaking through, get your main DPS’s level, Light Cone and key traces up to standard, or you’ll be stuck in a “can’t clear dungeons, can’t gear up” loop.

Stage Four: Toward the Endgame#

Once the high-difficulty dungeons and endgame modes are all unlocked, start planning a second team: Memory of Chaos and friends require two teams fighting separately, with complementary type coverage. Don’t dump everything into one team.

The Seven-Day Beginner Plan#

Stage Goal Recommended actions
Day 1 Clear the opening story Max the Departure Warp, put Natasha in your team
Days 2-3 Build daily habits Daily Training + clear Trailblaze Power + refresh Assignments
Days 4-5 Unlock the Simulated Universe Max weekly points, bank your first Planar Ornament
Days 6-7 Prepare for Equilibrium breakthroughs Top off your main DPS’s traces before the trial missions

Common Beginner Questions#

Question Answer
What should I farm with Trailblaze Power first? Trace materials and character EXP early; save Cavern of Corrosion until your roster is formed
How should I spend Stellar Jade? Exchange only for Special Passes on featured character banners, never for Standard Passes
I lost the 50/50 — now what? Don’t be discouraged: the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured one, and pity carries across banners
Trailblaze Power overflowed? It auto-converts to Reserved Trailblaze Power (cap 2400), withdrawn 1:1 with no loss
How long should Assignments run? 20 hours is optimal, and assigned characters can still fight
Should I use Fuel right away? Keep it unless you need materials; 1 Fuel = 60 points when you do

Things to Avoid#

  • Don’t exchange Stellar Jade for Standard Passes; build standard pity slowly with free passes.
  • Don’t dump early Trailblaze Power into Cavern of Corrosion — the returns are terrible before your roster is formed.
  • Just 3 Echo of War clears per week; beyond 3 there are no bonus rewards.
  • Always pick the 20-hour Assignment duration; assigned characters can still enter battle.
  • When level-gated, prioritize side quests, achievements and chests instead of idling.

Final Words#

Star Rail’s progression is a marathon. What wins the early game isn’t grinding hardest but managing resources best: clear Trailblaze Power daily, max weekly bonus rewards, treat Reserved Power as your backup pool, and only spend Stellar Jade on banners you truly want. Follow this rhythm and you’ll reach the endgame far calmer than most fellow Trailblazers. The Express has whistled — the rest of the journey is yours.
