Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Guide#

Game Overview#

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is a historical strategy game developed by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA, released for Windows on Steam on May 23, 2019. It sets the series’ two traditions — a turn-based campaign map and large-scale real-time tactical battles — in China’s Three Kingdoms period: you run your faction turn by turn on the grand map, and when war breaks out the view switches to real-time command of full formations on the battlefield. The original release window was fall 2018; the date slipped first to March 7, 2019, and finally landed on May 23, 2019.

The game offers two mode orientations: Romance and Records. In Romance mode, generals carry far stronger personal combat power with a martial-arts spectacle flavor; Records stays closer to the official histories, where generals act as unit commanders. The base-game campaign opens in 190 CE (the “China in 190CE” framing from the Steam store page), and the chapter packs extend the playable eras to 182, 194, 200, and 291 CE.

Commercial and Player Data#

  • One million copies sold in the first week — the fastest in Total War history (reported by PC Gamer and GamesBeat).
  • Cumulative sales reached 3.21 million by March 2025 (per reports citing SEGA figures via English Wikipedia).
  • More than 160,000 concurrent players on launch day and 192,000 across the first weekend — both series records — earning the Guinness World Record for “most concurrent players on Steam for a real-time strategy game” (historical peak: 192,298).
  • Steam’s positive review ratio stands at about 71.9% (roughly 108,000 reviews); the end of content updates in May 2021 triggered a review bomb — excluding that period, the ratio is around 82% (flagged by steamdb.info).

Core Gameplay Loop#

The experience rests on three layers; understanding how they connect is the foundation for every guide on this site:

  1. Turn-based grand map: Each turn represents one season. You build, manage personnel, conduct diplomacy, and move armies across a two-tier map of commanderies and counties. The Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) shape internal-affairs specializations, and the character relationship system (Guanxi) determines whether generals stay and how they perform.
  2. Real-time tactical battles: Engagements shift to a real-time battlefield for deployments, charges, and one-on-one duels between generals; in Romance mode, heroes perform with far more wuxia-style flair.
  3. Diplomacy and personnel: Marriages, sworn brotherhoods, vassalage, and annexation provide the tools of peaceful expansion; the network of inter-faction relations decides whether alliances actually hold.

Faction-specific mechanics differ considerably; for exact bonus directions, defer to the in-game faction pages — this site does not invent numbers.

Current Version Status#

After Fates Divided shipped in May 2021, Creative Assembly declared the game “complete in terms of content” and ended content updates; the final patch is 1.7.1 (May 27, 2021). No new factions or mechanics have arrived since, and every guide on this site reflects that final version. The end of updates did trigger a player review bomb; with that period excluded, Steam’s positive ratio sits around 82%. Any mention of “future updates” does not apply to this title — the site no longer keeps such outdated phrasing.
