Getting Started: Your First Steps

Pick the Right Mode First#

Planet Zoo 2 offers four game modes, and your opening choice directly shapes your first ten hours. The core differences:

Mode Online Required Cash Pressure Best For
Career mode Playable offline Yes First pick for newcomers — a global story around the fictional conservation organization FEN, with the most complete systems tutorial
Franchise mode Online required Yes Players who want to run one zoo long-term and join community challenges and global animal trading
Challenge mode Playable offline Yes Players who want management pressure without going online; uses the in-game animal market
Sandbox mode Playable offline No cash limit Pure building and creativity players

New players should start with Career mode: Push Square scored the PS5 version 9/10 while noting the game’s “steep learning curve and fiddly gamepad controls”, and Career mode’s guidance flattens that curve considerably. Once you’re comfortable with the three systems of welfare, building, and economy, move on to Franchise mode for the long haul. Detailed mode comparisons in Challenge and Sandbox Mode Guide and Career Mode Walkthrough.

Opening Sequence: The First Sixty Minutes#

In management sims, an opening gap compounds within hours. Here is the recommended opening sequence:

  1. Plan the path skeleton first. The path tools support four modes — straight, curved, draw, and stamp. Lay out the park’s main loop before anything else: guest flow is the prerequisite for every facility placement afterward, and rerouting roads after buildings pile up is the biggest source of rework. Details in Path System and Guest Flow Design.
  2. Build the first habitat, small and refined. The welfare system grades food, water, space, social, enrichment, privacy, and health (details in Animal Welfare and Needs System Explained). Space and social needs vary hugely by species, so pick easy species at the start — don’t open with large herd animals.
  3. Lay keeper paths. Habitats must include keeper access, aquariums especially — without a clear path, staff can’t enter and the whole animal-care chain collapses. This is the most common “invisible dead file” of the newcomer phase.
  4. Place basic guest facilities. Along the main path; don’t overdo it.
  5. Add education and donation points. Talks/exhibits boost the guest education pillar, and donation bin income is tied to the Thriving state of your animals.
  6. Check the season. At the start, confirm the current season and the climate of your biome, and decide early whether you need heaters or coolers (details in Seasons System and Weather Preparedness).

First Habitat Checklist#

Before placing any animals, check every row below. Each row maps to a welfare field — miss one and animal status starts sliding:

Check Welfare Field Common Miss
Fence complete and tall enough Space and safety Only three sides fenced; height too low for climbers or fliers
Food and water in place Food, water Forgetting feeders or water sources; animals go hungry long-term
Floor area and vertical space Space Aviary roof left open; aquarium water volume insufficient
Herd size appropriate Social Solitary animals crammed into groups, or social animals kept alone
Enrichment and cover Enrichment, privacy Bare, exposed enclosures keeping animals stressed
Shelter and climate control Health Discovering only at season change that there is no heater or cooler
Keeper path clear Health and food Building sealed tight so staff cannot enter to care for animals
Species habits researched All Building before confirming the species’ needs in Zoopedia

Meet the Zoopedia#

The built-in official animal encyclopedia is the game’s most important reference: over 130 species each have their own needs and behavior data, covering space requirements, social herd sizes, and diet composition. Build one habit in the opening phase — before introducing any new species, open the Zoopedia entry first. It beats troubleshooting afterward by a wide margin.

To be clear: the confirmed species roster for this guide is in Animal System Overview; each species’ specific values (space needs, temperature and humidity, lifespan, conservation status grades, etc.) are subject to the in-game Zoopedia’s live data, and we cite no unverified numbers.

The Six Most Common Newcomer Mistakes#

  1. Building the zoo too big. Once the park sprawls, paths, staff commutes, and equipment coverage all become burdens. Make the first zoo small and dense, and get the welfare–reputation–income loop running first.
  2. Ignoring the social field. Keeping social animals alone, or mixing solitary animals into groups, directly hits welfare and thriving progress.
  3. Zero season preparation. The seasons change temperature, shelter use, and energy demand; have heating and cooling ready before the season turns — don’t wait until animal status collapses.
  4. Watching meters instead of animals. The animal brain system makes behavior a direct readout of welfare — sluggish animals that don’t herd or forage are an alarm in themselves, earlier than any meter.
  5. Path dead zones and dead ends. Poor guest flow design drags down the guest experience pillar’s reputation score, and shop and talks revenue suffers with it.
  6. Fighting fine building on a gamepad. Reviews repeatedly call gamepad controls fiddly; for detailed building, keyboard and mouse come strongly recommended. The gamepad suits console browsing and observation better.

Daily and Weekly Routines#

Once the opening works, lock operations into two checklists to prevent most operational accidents:

Daily routine (in-game rhythm)

Routine Action Purpose
Park patrol Walk every exhibit in observation mode and watch behavior Sluggishness, failure to herd, or not foraging are the first signs of welfare alarms
Welfare panel spot-check Verify the seven welfare fields for key species Fields usually dip before behavior goes visibly wrong
Staff status check Review morale and workload distribution Staff morale is an explicit management dimension in this game; see Staff Management and Roles
Income snapshot Review the day’s ticket, retail, and donation breakdown Catch flow or pricing problems early
Path re-check After new exhibits, confirm keeper paths are unobstructed Path problems are the root of ‘delayed eruption’ incidents

Weekly routine (season-driven)

  1. Check season progress and next season’s forecast; confirm climate equipment configuration.
  2. Check the current community challenge theme and your progress (online in Franchise mode, community challenges refresh weekly).
  3. Review breeding plans: births, whether herd sizes near capacity, and whether to schedule trades or releases.
  4. Check facility wear and cleaning needs; schedule maintenance rotation.
  5. Review changes in the four reputation pillars and find the slipping one (details in Education, Conservation and Five-Star Reputation).

Keyboard-Mouse vs Gamepad#

Based on actual media feedback, divide input duties like this:

Scenario Recommended Input Why
Fine building (fences, roofs, path nodes) Keyboard and mouse Push Square explicitly calls gamepad controls fiddly; piece-by-piece building demands precision
Blueprint placement and overall layout Either gamepad or keyboard and mouse Blueprints place instantly and demand less precision
Daily operations and panel management Gamepad works fully The game fully supports Xbox, DualShock, and DualSense controllers
Observing animal behavior Gamepad is more comfortable The couch view plus photo mode is one of this game’s unique pleasures

Console players shouldn’t be scared off by the “fiddly gamepad” reviews — what’s fiddly is deep building, not the game itself. Divide duties as above and both platforms play comfortably.

Growth Path After Opening#

Once the first habitat runs, fill gaps in this order for maximum efficiency:

  1. Raise your first species to the Thriving state — the best exercise for understanding the welfare system; thriving animals live longer and guests donate more.
  2. Build an aviary and experience vertical space and walk-through design (details in Aviary Building and Management).
  3. Build an aquarium and master water temperature, salinity, and filtration (details in Aquarium Building and Management).
  4. Unlock the wildlife reserve and complete your first release (details in Wildlife Reserves and Release Guide).
  5. Join this week’s community challenge and claim global milestone rewards (details in Achievements and Milestones Guide).
