FAQ and Zoo Operation Troubleshooting#
How to Use This Page#
This page is the ’emergency room’ of the whole section: look up your symptom in the tables, find the likely causes and fix actions, then jump to the dedicated page for a systematic repair. The overall diagnostic principle comes from two designs of this game:
- Behavior precedes the panel: the Animal Brain system makes behavior a real-time readout of welfare; most problems show behavioral signs before any numeric alarm (see Animal Brain Behavior System Explained).
- Systems are coupled: welfare, reputation, revenue and staff affect each other; a single-point symptom is often an upstream system problem — step one layer upstream when diagnosing.
Animal Issues#
Symptom: animals sluggish, motionless for long stretches#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Welfare fields trending down |
Run through the seven fields: food, water, space, social, enrichment, privacy, health (see Animal Welfare and Needs System Explained) |
| Stress from lack of privacy |
Check visual barriers and the distribution of cover |
| Missing seasonal climate control |
Verify the current season against heater/cooler configuration (see Four Seasons System and Climate Management) |
| Health/injury |
Are staff reachable? Is the care line on duty? |
Distinguish carefully: activity swings during a season change are the normal seasonal response of the animal brain, manifesting as ‘changing rhythmically’; pathological sluggishness is a ‘one-directional collapse’. Observe the former; diagnose the latter against the table above.
Symptom: animals not grouping, isolating in a corner#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Abnormal group structure |
Deaths, trades or introductions changed the social structure |
| Social field below requirement |
Compare against Zoopedia group size requirements |
| Nearby stimulus |
Did the neighboring exhibit switch to predators or other high-stimulus neighbors (see Animal Brain Behavior System Explained) |
Symptom: birds crashing into mesh or escaping#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Gaps in roof mesh |
Fully inspect the seal of the dynamic mesh roof (see Aviary Construction and Management) |
| Insufficient height |
Re-verify the space field and vertical clearance |
| Startle stimulus |
Guest route noise, neighboring exhibits, recent construction |
Symptom: aquarium animals declining collectively#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Filtration failure |
Water treatment equipment status is priority number one (see Aquarium Construction and Management) |
| Water temperature drifting with seasons |
Recalibrate water temperature at season change; check heating/cooling equipment load |
| Salinity mismatch |
Has a saltwater/freshwater setup been confused |
| Cleaning interrupted |
Keeper paths and the cleaning schedule |
Symptom: breeding making no progress#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Season window not reached |
Breeding rhythms change with the four seasons (see Animal Breeding and Genetics) |
| Group structure unmet |
Social field, group size, individual compatibility |
| Welfare short of Thriving |
Self-check the three Thriving prerequisites: research, naturalization, enrichment |
Guest and Business Issues#
Symptom: guests not donating#
Symptom: shops at zero sales or unusually low revenue#
Symptom: reputation score stalled#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Four dimensions unbalanced |
Find the lowest dimension and fill it along its specialty line (see Education, Conservation and Five-Star Reputation) |
| Seasonal welfare swings |
Was season-change preparation executed per the checklist |
| Sustainability missing |
Are reserve projects and releases running regularly |
Symptom: revenue declining#
Diagnostic order: traffic → revenue structure → cost structure → guest flow → animal condition. For the full process see the loss-diagnosis section of Economy and Ticket Pricing.
Staff and Facility Issues#
Symptom: staff-wide ‘collective strike’ style failure#
Multiple unrelated systems degrade at once (dirty exhibits, closed storefronts, empty feed troughs) — nine times out of ten it is staff-side:
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Blocked paths |
Did the latest expansion/landscaping seal off staff corridors |
| Low morale |
Workload distribution, rest facilities, headcount gaps |
| Workload overload |
No backfill after exhibit expansion |
Symptom: facilities stalling frequently#
| Possible cause |
Check action |
| Maintenance line understaffed |
Maintenance headcount and workload |
| Supply route sealed |
Recheck facility back-area routes |
| Energy supply strained |
Audit the seasonal energy peak (see Four Seasons System and Climate Management) |
Controls and Version Issues#
Symptom: controller/gamepad controls feel clunky#
This is an issue explicitly called out in media reviews (Push Square 9/10) — an operating cost, not a fault:
- Complete the career mode tutorial properly to get used to the control rhythm.
- Switch fine building to blueprints and stamp tools to cut per-piece actions.
- PC players should just switch to mouse and keyboard; console players should complete heavy building work in the blueprint stage.
- The game launched on October 13, 2026, and within 24 hours of launch the officials posted a ‘player feedback and planned maintenance’ notice, with the first community challenge going live at the same time — details of the day-one patch contents and version number have not been officially published, so for suspected version issues defer to official announcements and update notes.
- As of the October 15, 2026 check, Steam user reviews stood at ‘Mostly Positive’ at roughly 70%; if your issue appears in most players’ discussions, watch the official follow-up maintenance plan.
- For franchise mode anomalies (market, community challenges), check the network connection first — the mode requires being online.
The Universal Diagnostic Process#
Any symptom can go through this five-step framework:
- Classify: is it an animal behavior problem, a business-numbers problem, or a system function problem?
- Locate: check the symptom tables on this page and list the likely causes.
- Jump to the dedicated page: follow the in-table links to the relevant page for the systematic fix.
- Verify: after the fix, confirm recovery using behavior readouts or panel numbers.
- Institutionalize: write this lesson into the daily/weekly routine checklist (template in Getting Started).
