Build Archetypes#

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II has no class system — Henry isn’t locked into warrior, hunter or rogue at character creation. Your character’s direction is decided by two things: the natural growth of the four attributes through use, and your perk picks in the combat skill trees. The same character can play completely differently depending on which attributes and perks you combine.

The Four Attributes: Grow by Use, No Point Spending#

There’s no “level up, allocate points freely” panel in this game. All four attributes grow exclusively through doing the matching activity — swinging swords grows Strength and Agility, running and trekking grows Vitality, opening your mouth grows Speech. So build planning shifts from “planning an allocation” to “planning a playstyle”: want a direction? Do that direction’s activities.

Attribute Main effects How it grows
Strength Melee damage, carry weight, heavy armor and heavy weapon requirements, drawing bows Fight with Strength weapons, carry heavy loads
Agility Attack stamina cost, attack speed, light armor efficiency Use Agility weapons and fight in light armor
Vitality Health and stamina Run, swim, fight long battles
Speech Persuasion, shop haggling Dialogue and negotiation

How the attributes map onto the archetypes:

  • Strength is the foundation of every heavy melee route: melee damage, carry weight, heavy armor requirements and bow drawing all hang off it. The mace build leans on Strength growth hardest.
  • Agility builds’ core payoff is “you can afford to swing” — cheaper attacks mean longer offense chains, and the attack speed advantage wins the clinch.
  • Vitality decides health and stamina — the shared survival floor of every build, and the backbone of any long fight.
  • Speech doesn’t fight directly, but persuasion and haggling dramatically improve your resources: gear gets cheaper, and many conflicts end without a fight.

Sword and Shield: The Safe Beginner Route#

A one-handed sword plus shield is the least likely build to fall apart early. Blocks cost little stamina, counters come fast, and the margin for error is generous — even with unpracticed hands you can hold the line with the shield and grind your opponent down.

Item Details
Weapon combo One-handed sword + shield
Core style Cheap blocks, fast counters, steady defense into counterattack
Best for First-timers still learning the combat rhythm
How to start Pick the weapon preference in the prologue (Easy Riders) to give swordplay a head start

Key perks:

Perk Effect
Vanguard Shield blocks cost -30% stamina
Nimble Stance Dodges cost -40% stamina

These two perks reinforce exactly what sword-and-board stands on: Vanguard slashes the stamina cost of holding up your block, and combined with the shield’s naturally low costs you can stand firm through long enemy combos; Nimble Stance cuts dodge costs, giving you more room to choose between blocking and evading.

Mace Build: The Plate Killer#

Maces and war hammers are the most effective answer to plate armor. Plate-armored enemies barely notice sword cuts, but blunt impact kills through the steel — under this game’s armor mechanics, blunt force is the most direct anti-armor answer.

Item Details
Weapon combo Mace / war hammer
Core style Impact damage through armor, specialize against plate enemies
Growth requirement Leans on Strength — needs time to develop
Best for Players willing to bide early and snowball a Strength playstyle late

Key perks:

Perk Unlock level Effect
Blunt Force Trauma Level 8 Charged heavy attacks +10%
Bonebreaker Level 10 Hits reduce enemy stamina regen by -15% for 15 seconds
Brute Force I / II — Heavy weapon damage +5% per rank

The mace build’s rhythm is classic “slow to boil”: before Strength matures, heavy blunt weapons swing slowly and eat stamina. Once attributes and perks come online — Blunt Force Trauma boosting charged hits, Bonebreaker suppressing enemy stamina regen on hit, plus the permanent damage from Brute Force I / II — fully plate-armored tough enemies become remarkably manageable.

Archer Build: Bows, Crossbows and Stealth#

Bows and crossbows offer an option besides head-on brawling, and they pair naturally with stealth: eliminate or soften the target from the dark first, then decide whether to finish with melee.

Item Details
Weapon combo Bow / crossbow, paired with stealth
Core style Ranged opener, ambush start
Best for Players who like controlling engagement distance and avoiding slugfests

Key perks:

Perk Unlock level Effect
Bowyer Level 14 Self-repaired bows +10%
Ambusher Level 18 Sneak attacks +20%

The archer build’s two key perks are both “investment” perks: Bowyer improves your own bow repairs, keeping your main ranged weapon in good shape long-term; Ambusher amplifies sneak-attack damage, dovetailing with stealth openers. The level gates are steep — it’s a long-game direction that grows stronger the longer you play.

Unarmed and Dueling#

Unarmed brawling is an often-ignored direction, ideal for players who like close-quarters scrapping and beating opponents into submission rather than killing them. It ignores weapon durability and needs no extra gear purchases for the build.

Key perk:

Perk Unlock level Effect
Belligerent Brawler Level 6 Follow-up attacks cost -20% stamina, deal +10% damage

Belligerent Brawler improves both stamina economy and damage in extended combos — follow-ups cost 20% less and hit 10% harder, making sustained close-range pressure actually sustainable. The unarmed/dueling tree has more perks in the same vein to combine; light them up progressively to match your combo habits.

The Armor Tiers: From Soft to Plate#

Armor in this game divides cleanly into three tiers of protection, tied directly to attributes and build choice — carry weight links to Strength, so the heavier you dress the more Strength you need.

Tier Materials Character
Soft armor Cloth, leather Lightest weight, free movement, ideal for stealth and Agility routes
Chainmail Woven metal rings The transitional middle ground
Plate armor Rigid plates Strongest protection, heavy, demands Strength

How to choose:

  • Agility and stealth players should prioritize soft armor, trading protection for freedom of movement and concealment.
  • Chainmail is the compromise between attack and defense, a good stopgap for Strength builds that haven’t matured yet.
  • Plate is the endgame form of the mace build and heavy sword-and-board — but remember weight ties to Strength. Not enough Strength and you’ll neither run nor swing.

Skills Feed Each Other: Combat Is Growth#

The growth systems interlock: combat actions simultaneously raise both the matching weapon skill and attributes like Strength and Agility. Swing a mace and mace skill grows alongside Strength; shoot a bow and archery grows with the linked attributes.

That means build-crafting here isn’t a static “plan first, execute later” scheme — it’s a dynamic “the more you play, the more specialized you get” process:

  • Stick with one weapon type and the weapon skill, its supporting attributes and the matching perk unlocks all advance together — you’ll finish a build far faster than by spreading evenly.
  • Conversely, constantly switching weapons dilutes growth. If the goal is a finished mace build, keep the mace and war hammer in the main slots.
  • There’s no free point allocation as a safety net, so a wrong direction is hard to walk back — decide which route you want before committing a playthrough.

Archetypes at a Glance#

Archetype Weapon combo Key perks Best for
Sword and shield One-handed sword + shield Vanguard, Nimble Stance First pick for beginners
Mace Mace / war hammer Blunt Force Trauma, Bonebreaker, Brute Force I / II Strength-investment players
Archer Bow / crossbow + stealth Bowyer, Ambusher Ranged and stealth fans
Unarmed/dueling Bare hands Belligerent Brawler Close-quarters brawlers

The flip side of having no class system: every build runs on the same attributes and skills, so changing your playstyle mid-game always remains possible — you just can’t instantly cash in growth already spent elsewhere. Pick a main line and dig in, letting every fight accumulate experience toward the warrior you want to become. That’s where the fun of this build system lives.
