Boss Guide#
God of War (2018)’s boss fights are concentrated in the main story (about 8 encounters) and optional challenges (9 Valkyries, hidden trials). This chapter gives the complete list plus a universal strategy framework.
Main-Story Boss List#
| Boss | Stage | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| The Stranger (Baldur prologue fight) | Prologue — the wilds | Tutorial fight; his attacks can’t be fully blocked — learn the roll-dodge-and-counter rhythm |
| Dauði Hamarr and other trolls | Early main story | Troll playbook: dismantle thrown objects, punish the turnaround recovery |
| Dark Elf King | Alfheim | Climax of the Light Elf campaign; clear the adds first, interrupt his flying charge |
| Hræzlyr (the mountain dragon) | The Mountain | Anti-air relies on scenario throwables and Atreus’s lightning arrows; the bronze trophy “Dragon Slayer” unlocks after the kill |
| Magni and Modi | Thamur’s Corpse | Double boss fight; focus one first (Magni recommended) and use the stonemason’s corpse terrain |
| Mattugr Helson (Bridge Keeper) | Helheim | One-on-one on the bridge; his attacks carry Frost — keep moving |
| Baldur (final fight) | Homeward Storm | Four-phase gauntlet; the mistletoe mechanic is explained in-story, and red-circle attacks must be dodged |
The Nine Valkyries (Official Locations)#
| Valkyrie | Location | Difficulty reference |
|---|---|---|
| Gunnr | Thamur’s Corpse, hidden chamber | Weakest — tutorial tier |
| Geirdriful | The Foothills, hidden chamber | Mild |
| Eir | The Mountain, hidden chamber | Mild |
| Kara | The Witch’s Cave, hidden chamber | Summons draugr — bring an AoE runic |
| Olrun | Alfheim, the Light Elf Shore | Mobile, dashes constantly |
| Rota | Helheim, hidden chamber | Aggressive rushdown |
| Gondul | Top of Muspelheim Trial VI | Strong; drops the blades’ final upgrade material |
| Hildr | Deep in the Niflheim maze | The mist adds pressure |
| Sigrun (Valkyrie Queen) | Council of Valkyries | Hardest fight in the game; roughly four times a normal Valkyrie’s health |
After defeating eight Valkyries and placing their helmets on the Council of Valkyries’ throne, Sigrun appears. Immediately press the interact key at the start — she combines the entire moveset of the previous eight, and a single attack can change direction two or three times in a row.
Valkyrie Quick Notes#
| Valkyrie | Strategy focus |
|---|---|
| Gunnr | Use the first fight to learn the moveset; defensive gear is fine — practice perfect parries and red-circle double dodges |
| Geirdriful | Similar to Gunnr but faster; hold mid range and watch her dive wind-up |
| Eir | Defensive counter-fighter; her stun bar fills fast — spam Atreus arrows to bank executions |
| Kara | Summons level-4 draugr; bring an AoE runic first and never get surrounded |
| Olrun | High-mobility dasher; sidestep her lunges and punish the recovery |
| Rota | Aggressive with brutal strings; don’t overstay — bank runics for her recovery windows |
| Gondul | Fire attacks plus stronger strings; her knockdown is the main damage window |
| Hildr | The mist drains your health — fight fast and confirm your mist armor is equipped before entering |
| Sigrun | Every move from the previous eight, with attacks redirecting two or three times; the big arena favors recovery — grind her down slowly |
Valkyrie Gear Advice#
- Level 6 is enough for the first four; Olrun, Rota, Gondul and Hildr want 7+; Sigrun wants 8
- The cooldown build (stacked Cooldown + short-cooldown runic attacks) yields the most damage windows — the community’s consensus safest plan
- Ivaldi’s Mist set heals on its own, the highest tolerance; Sindri’s Royal Dwarven set suits speed kills with its Cooldown bonuses
- Realm Shift-style talismans (brief time slow) carve out damage windows inside Valkyrie rushdown
Universal Valkyrie Strategy#
| Element | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Attack tells | Yellow-circle attacks can be perfect-parried and countered; red-circle attacks must be side- or double-dodged |
| Wing block | When they block with their wings, break guard with a shield rush or heavy runic |
| Stun damage | Atreus’s constant arrows build stun; when the bar fills, run in for the execution pounding |
| Runic windows | Drop high-damage runics when they’re down or recovering; short-cooldown runics can fire twice per cycle |
| Survival | Trigger Spartan Rage at low health to heal; carry a Berserker Resurrection Stone and pop Rage the instant you revive |
| Gear | Cooldown build or Ivaldi’s Mist set (sustain) is safest; level 6+ for the first four, 8 for the Queen |
Muspelheim Trials#
The fire realm’s challenge-style “boss gauntlet”: six arenas each hold a Normal and Hard round, with rules like kill timers, no-damage, no-touching-the-ground and body counts. Completing every trial unlocks the gold trophy “Fire and Brimstone”.
- The mountaintop final platform holds the Valkyrie Gondul — the peak of Trial VI and the only source of the blades’ final upgrade material
- Hard rounds and the “Impossible trials” reward Crests of Flame, traded for top-tier fire gear
Niflheim Maze#
The mist realm has no traditional boss — the pressure is environmental and time-based:
- The mist constantly drains health; leaving resets the Mist Echoes you gathered that run
- The Valkyrie Hildr waits deep in the maze — the recommended route hugs the left side
- The central workshop room needs three key items; retrieving every treasure unlocks the gold trophy “Darkness and Fog”
Weapon Upgrade Materials and Bosses#
| Material | Count | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen Flame | 5 | Main-story boss fights (including Hræzlyr, Magni and Modi, and more) |
| Chaos Flame | 4 | Main-story boss fights (including the Bridge Keeper) |
| Raging Inferno of Muspelheim | 1 | Valkyrie Gondul |
All Frozen and Chaos Flames arrive automatically with the story — nothing is missable; the blades’ final level requires beating Gondul.
Universal Combat Tips#
- Read the attack before attacking: every boss’s red-circle heavy has a clear wind-up — trade one swing for a dodge window every time.
- Atreus is a stun machine: keep an arrow in flight; when the stun bar fills, close in for the execution.
- Use runic attacks as burst: bank cooldowns and fire both runics during knockdown or recovery windows.
- Terrain interaction: some arenas have destructible rigs, crystals and explosives — use them first.
- Gear level matters: Valkyries and endgame bosses recommend levels 6-8; a big level gap visibly suppresses your damage.
Main-Story Boss Notes#
Hræzlyr (the mountain dragon)#
- You can’t reach him during the aerial phase — throw the Hræzlyr crystals scattered in the arena back at him; it’s the intended anti-air tool
- Atreus’s lightning arrows are the main interrupt while the dragon is grounded and charging
- After the fight, climb onward with the story — the bronze trophy “Dragon Slayer” unlocks automatically
Magni and Modi#
- Focus Magni first: once he falls, Modi’s attack patterns flatten out
- The open ground around the stonemason’s corpse favors flanking; when the brothers separate, burst one down with stun damage
- Modi reappears later in the story — don’t worry about missing anything on the spot
Baldur (final fight)#
- A four-phase gauntlet with story interludes; his health refills on phase transitions
- He uses the same moveset as the prologue fight — the rhythm you learned there applies directly
- Red-circle attacks (dives, grabs) must be dodged; yellow circles can be perfect-parried
- The bronze trophy “Summoning of Dawn” unlocks afterwards — the end of the main story’s combat
