Signature abilities:
Barret Wallace#
Type: Ranged tank
Signature abilities:
Usage tips: Barret’s place is at the back of the party. Use Avalanche Spirit to draw enemy aggro and protect the fragile Aerith. Barret is the best candidate for primary healer — he can keep outputting safely from the back row while restoring the party’s HP. Against flying enemies he is indispensable. Equip him with Healing and Revival materia and let Barret be the party’s medic.

Team Synergy Strategies#
Standard Balanced Team: Cloud + Tifa + Aerith#
The most versatile party setup, suited to nearly every encounter. Cloud holds the front line as main tank, drawing aggro while outputting steadily. Tifa is the secondary damage dealer and stagger multiplier amplifier, bursting when enemies are staggered. Aerith supports from the back with magic damage. This lineup’s weakness is the lack of a dedicated tank — Cloud’s survivability is under pressure, so switch to Tifa often to share aggro.
Dual-Measure Speed Team: Cloud + Tifa + Barret#
A pure physical party for magic-resistant enemies. Barret supports and heals from the back while Cloud and Tifa trade blows up front. The dual-melee advantage is extremely fast stagger buildup — Cloud’s Punisher stance and Tifa’s rapid combos can stagger enemies quickly. The downside is weakness against flyers and magic-weak foes.
Aerith + Tifa Core Combo#
The strongest burst combo of the mid and late game. Aerith lays down Arcane Ward on the ground, Tifa staggers the enemy and stacks the multiplier, then switch to Cloud for Infinity’s End or let Aerith finish with a double-cast mega spell. The core of this combo is precise timing — stacking the multiplier and outputting must both happen inside the stagger window.
Affinity System#
- Cloud: Mako Breaker → Infinity’s End → Fierce Slash
Some chapter choices affect Tifa’s and Aerith’s affinity toward Cloud. Affinity doesn’t change the main ending, but it does affect the special Chapter 14 scene and certain Chapter 18 cutscenes.
Weapon Skill Mastery Guide#
Weapon skill mastery is a major part of character growth. Every weapon has one unique ability — use that ability repeatedly in battle with that weapon equipped to raise proficiency.
Fast skill mastery method:
- Cloud: Mako Breaker → Infinity’s End → Fierce Slash
- Tifa: Straight Punch → Burst Punch → Final Heaven
- Aerith: Arcane Ward → Shield of Light → Ray of Judgment
- Barret: Avalanche Spirit → Overheat → Destroyer Combo
After mastery: Mastered abilities never go away — they can be equipped on any weapon. This means your strongest weapon can carry other weapons’ signature abilities. For example, use Mako Breaker (a high-stagger damage ability) on Hardedge (the highest attack weapon), or Final Heaven on the God Fist. This is the core mechanic for maximizing combat power.
Attribute Growth Comparison#

| Aerith | ★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★ | Magic turret — crowd control and support |
| Barret | ★★★★★ | ★★ | ★★★ | ★★ | ★ | Tank + ranged — sustained pressure |

Recommended Character Combos#
| Character | Opener | Filler | Burst | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud | Power Slash | High-speed slashes | Mako Breaker | Single bosses — stagger-weak targets |
| Tifa | Burst Punch | Straight Punch x3 | Final Heaven | Stagger window — maximize the multiplier |

Materia Allocation Advice#
| Character | Weapon slots | Armor slots | Recommended combination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud | 3+1 linked (2 sets) | 2+1 linked (1 set) | Linked: Elemental + Thunder/Fire — remaining slots HP Up x2 + ATK Up x2 |
| Tifa | 2 (3 slots) | 2 (2 slots) | Skill Master + ATB Boost — everything else HP Up + Strength Up |
| Aerith | 3+1 linked (1 set) + 2 (2 slots) | 2 (3 slots) | Magic + Magnify + Barrier — Efficiency + MP Up — Revival |
| Barret | 2 (3 slots) + 3 (1 slot) | 2 (3 slots) | HP Up x3 (for tanking) — Blizzard + Elemental (weapon) — Healing + Revival (armor) |
Affinity Events#
| Character | Affinity event | Chapter | Choice effect | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tifa | Rooftop date | Chapter 3 | Choose “I feel for you” → affinity +10 | Tifa’s weapon “God Fist” |
| Aerith | Flower cart ride | Chapter 8 | Choose “The flowers are beautiful” → affinity +10 | Aerith’s weapon “Mythril Rod” |
| Barret | Bar conversation | Chapter 5 | Choose “I understand” → affinity +5 | Barret’s weapon “Cannon” |
Tactical Roles#
| Character | Main role | Secondary role | Best partner | Counters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud | Universal melee core | Secondary magic damage | Aerith (magic synergy) | Lightning-weak / physically weak enemies |
| Tifa | Stagger multiplier stacker | Single-target burst | Cloud (burst synergy) | High-HP bosses — one-shot after stagger |
| Aerith | Primary magic damage | Party heals + support | Barret (survival synergy) | Element-weak packs — instant Arcane Ward clears |
| Barret | Ranged tank + shield | Sustained healing + revival | Aerith (mutual protection) | High-damage bosses — Avalanche Spirit splits damage |
Switching advice: swap characters every 5-10 seconds in battle — let the AI build ATB with basic attacks — and by the time you switch back, abilities are ready — far more efficient than single-character control.
Character Info Overview#
Role Summary#
Division of Labor at a Glance#
The five playable characters have very clearly defined roles. Memorizing each one’s job greatly reduces in-the-moment decision load:
| Character | Role | Control difficulty | Equipment focus | Weakness to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud | All-around main fighter | Moderate | Weapon attack and Counterstance | No ranged option — must fight up close |
| Tifa | Stagger burst hand | Higher | Combo links and stagger multiplier | Fragile — don’t stand still for long |
| Aerith | Magic core | Moderate | Magic attack and skill cooldowns | High aggro — needs protection |
| Barret | Tank and healer | Low | Max HP and healing skills | Slow to act, weak stagger buildup |
| Red XIII | Mobile support | High | High-speed pursuit and counters | Controllable only in certain chapters |
Core Team-Building Logic#
When building a party, ask three questions: who absorbs damage, who creates staggers, and who cashes in during the stagger window. From these three questions flow the standard building principles:
- Keep at least one front-line character who can hold aggro, so your mage doesn’t get focused down.
- Keep at least one character with healing or revival, or long fights fall apart.
- Once Tifa stacks the stagger multiplier, a high-burst character must cash in within the window — don’t waste it.
Recommended Pairings by Story Stage#
| Stage | Recommended party | Why |

| Chapters 8-14 (Aerith joins) | Cloud + Aerith + Barret | The classic attack-defense-magic triangle |
| Chapter 16 (returning to Midgar) | Cloud + Tifa + Barret | Against masses of machines, physical pressure is steadier |
| Final chapter (Red XIII joins) | Cloud + Aerith + Barret | A safe mix of damage, healing, and magic resistance |
