Boss Guides#
Scorpion Sentinel#
Chapter: Chapter 1 Stagger key: attack the tail when the weak point is exposed
Recommended setup: Cloud with Thunder Materia. Barret with Healing Materia as backup healing for the party. Control Cloud in melee throughout while Barret’s AI provides ranged support.
Abzu#
Chapter: Chapter 14 (first fight), Chapter 16 (rematch) Resistances: physical
A massive fish-like monster. Abzu is a serious threat in both the first fight (the sewers) and the rematch (Shinra HQ).
First-fight strategy:
- Phase one: Abzu stays in the water with limited reach. Stand on high ground and pile on ranged attacks and magic. Sidestep when it fires its water cannon.
- Core approach: keep fire magic flowing the whole fight. Aerith’s Arcane Ward + Fira can pump out enormous fire damage in a short window. After the stagger, switch to Tifa to stack the multiplier, then let Cloud cash in with Infinity’s End.
Rematch at Shinra HQ: The rematch version is much stronger, adding an ice breath (which inflicts stop) and more frequent full-arena attacks. Equip the tank with ice-resistant accessories. Still weak to fire — same tactics as the first fight, but guard more often.
Reno#
Chapter: Chapter 4 (first fight), Chapter 12 (rematch) Special: high physical resistance, very mobile
First-fight strategy:
- Reno moves extremely fast, and normal attacks struggle to connect. Chase him with wind magic (Aero).
- His moveset includes melee shock strikes (blockable) and thrown shock orbs (dodgeable).
- When he raises his energy shield, break it with wind magic or physical skills.
- Watch his “Death Sentence” attack — getting hit marks your head with a countdown. Use healing magic or items to cleanse it before the timer expires.
Rematch strategy: The Chapter 12 fight adds Rude support and the difficulty jumps sharply. Handle Reno while tracking Rude’s grabs. Focus Reno down first (less HP), then gang up on Rude. Their stagger gauges are independent.
Rude#
Chapter: Chapter 8 (first fight), Chapter 12 (rematch) Special: high physical resistance, massive grab damage
A burly Shinra Turk and master grappler.
First-fight strategy:
- Rude’s offense is heavy punches and throws. Throws cannot be blocked — only dodged (sidestep when you see the red exclamation mark).
- Weak to Ice: use Blizzard magic to build stagger fast.
- The final hit of his punch combo hurts the most — guard through the whole combo, then counter.
Rematch strategy: He appears alongside Reno. Suggested tactics: open with AoE ice magic to hit both, then have Tifa handle Rude (keep moving to dodge grabs) while Aerith or Cloud handles Reno. When Rude winds up his ground slam, a red circle appears — move out immediately.
Hell House#
Chapter: Chapter 9 Weakness: changes with each form Resistances: immunity matching the current form
Form changes and corresponding weaknesses:
- Red form (fire): weak to Ice → use Blizzard magic
- Blue form (ice): weak to Fire → use Fire magic
- Green form (poison): weak to Wind → use Aero magic
- Gold form (lightning): weak to Lightning → use Thunder magic
- Pink form (healing): weak to Lightning → use Thunder magic
Core approach:
- Equip the whole party with all four elemental materia (fire, ice, lightning, wind) to cover any form change
- Hell House exposes its weakness only briefly (about 3-4 seconds) — use Tactical Mode to slow time and pick the right weakness spell precisely
- Its furniture-throwing attack hits extremely hard — prioritize guarding before the window opens
- In the final phase Hell House summons monster packs — clear them with AoE magic
- There is only one burst window after the stagger — have limit breaks and big spells ready
Recommended materia setup: give Aerith all four elemental spells and output through Arcane Ward + double-cast weakness magic. Cloud carries Assess to identify the current weakness on the fly.
Jenova#
Chapter: Chapter 13 Weakness: magic (all elements) Resistances: physical (high resistance)
A fragment of the alien life form “Jenova”. This is a pure magic fight.
Core strategy:
- Use magic exclusively: elemental spells + Magic Focus materia
- Her centrifugal force field creates persistent damage zones — relocate promptly
- Her gaze attack inflicts silence — equip a silence-resistant accessory or carry Remedy
Tactical advice: Aerith is the core of this fight. Give her Arcane Ward and the highest-magic staff, and double-cast high-tier elemental spells for quick kills. Barret supports with magic (his magic damage is low but still beats his physical). Cloud’s Fierce Slash also performs well here.
Rufus Shinra#
Chapter: Chapter 17 Weakness: no fixed elemental weakness Special: requires breaking the “Shinra’s Pride” mechanic
Phase one: Darkstar:
- A mechanical hound that enters before Rufus
- Focus it down first, then turn your full attention to Rufus
- Watch Darkstar’s bite — guarding cuts the damage enormously
Phase two: Rufus duel:
- Rufus fights with a shotgun and seasoned instincts, with wide attack coverage
- His rapid-fire volley hits extremely hard — hide behind cover
- Use the brief window after his guard breaks for high-damage skills
- When Rufus uses his counter skill he glows gold — attacking then triggers a counterattack; wait for the glow to fade
Cloud duel tips: This fight is Cloud only. Equip Steadfast Block to strengthen guard and Healing for sustain. Counterstance effectively punishes Rufus’s melee attacks. When he opens fire with the shotgun, use the pillars as cover.
Sephiroth#
Chapter: Chapter 18 Weakness: no fixed weakness Special: multi-phase, with full-arena high-damage skills.
Phase one: Fated Fusion:
Phase two: Sephiroth, first form:
- Sephiroth enters properly, using classics like Octaslash
- His normal attacks hit extremely hard — stay defensive at all times
- His Amaterasu leaves purple pillars on the ground that detonate seconds later for wide damage
- The core of this phase is attrition — gradually fill the stagger gauge
Phase three: true Sephiroth:
- Sephiroth reveals his true power, gaining flight and full-arena attacks
- Supernova hits the whole arena — everyone guarding cuts the damage hugely
- Defiant Judgment floods the arena with energy — you must deal enough damage within the time limit
- Limit breaks are crucial in this phase — save them for the stagger window
Ultimate strategy: Equip everyone with Magic Up and Strength Up materia. Aerith sustains ranged magic output throughout, Cloud pressures in melee, and Tifa bursts after the stagger. Stock plenty of Phoenix Downs. Sephiroth’s stagger window is very short — have Tifa stack the multiplier, then immediately switch to your finisher for maximum skills.
Note: the bench before the final fight is your last chance to heal — double-check gear and materia before committing.
