Combat Basics#
Magic Burst#
Magic Burst is FF16’s single most important combo technique. After a normal attack connects, Clive flashes white — press △ at that moment to cancel the recovery animation with magic and extend the combo.
Basic Magic Burst combo □ → △ → □ → △ → □ → △ (ground loop)
Advanced Burst Techniques:
- Combo burst: aerial □ × 4 → △ × 4
- Dodge burst: after a precision dodge, follow with □ → △
- Ability cancel: press △ immediately after an ability to chain into magic
Precision Dodge#
Press ✕ just as an enemy attack is about to land to perform a precision dodge, triggering slowed time that leaves you plenty of room to counterattack.
Dodge counter After a precision dodge, press □ to launch a powerful counterattack.
The Stagger System#
| State | Effect |
|---|---|
| Healthy | The enemy acts normally |
| Broken (Will Gauge emptied) | The enemy is briefly stunned and wide open |
| Semi-staggered | A longer stun triggered under specific conditions |
| Staggered | The enemy is knocked down and takes greatly increased damage |
Stagger tips
- Garuda’s claw grab shreds the Will Gauge fast
- Bahamut’s lightning-fast strike bursts for massive damage while the enemy is staggered
- Burn the Will Gauge down with multi-hit abilities first, then cash in with your highest-damage skills
Limit Break#
Press L3 + R3 together to activate Limit Break, temporarily raising attack power while steadily regenerating HP.
| Tier | Effect |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Attack power up, slow HP regeneration |
| Stage 2 | Limit Break abilities unlock |
| Fully upgraded | Longer duration, faster regeneration |
Early-Game Tips#
- Prologue (~2 hours): the opening is linear — focus on learning basic combos and dodging. Don’t skip the tutorial prompts.
- First arrival at the Hideaway: talk to every NPC and pick up side quests. Craft basic gear upgrades.
- Ability Points: prioritize Precision Dodge Recovery and Magic Burst related skills.
- Use Torgal: Torgal isn’t just a pet — he’s a strong combat companion. Use D-pad down to order him to attack or heal.
- Explore the map: every corner of the map holds chests and steles. Even off the main path, detours are worth it.
- Don’t skip side quests: “Blackthorne the Craftsman” and the Moogle Shop quest unlock crafting and item purchases.
- Try different Eikons: you start with Phoenix only, but Garuda arrives soon. Experiment with combinations to find your style.
- Don’t fear consumables: the game provides plenty of restorative items — use them boldly in battle.

Early Progression and Resource Planning#
Gil Spending Priorities#
| Stage | Recommended | Not recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Chapters 1-3 | Upgrade weapons and armor, buy potions | Hoarding piles of low-tier consumables |
| Chapters 4-6 | Buy crafting materials, respec ability points if needed | Repeatedly buying low-tier accessories |
| Chapter 7 and beyond | Max out endgame gear, buy high-grade aether | One-off big-ticket purchases |
Ability Points and Eikon Progression#
- After gaining Garuda in Chapter 2, unlock and upgrade the claw grab immediately — it is the most efficient early-game Will Gauge shredder
- Back at the Hideaway in Chapter 3, take Blackthorne’s side quest — unlocking the forge is the core path to better stats
- After gaining Titan in Chapter 4, don’t rush to bench Phoenix — learn Titan Block’s timing in the training grounds first
- Every time the main story clears a Mothercrystal, return to the Hideaway and sweep the shop’s newly unlocked recipes and accessories
Recommended Early Checklist#
| Item | When | Payoff |
|---|---|---|
| Blackthorne’s forge quest | Chapter 3 | Unlocks gear crafting and upgrades |
| Moogle Shop quest | Chapter 3 | Unlocks rare item purchases |
| Vet station quest | Chapter 4 | Torgal skill upgrades |
| The Three Reeds stele | Before Chapter 5 | Grants an ability boost |
| All B-rank hunts | Before Chapter 6 | Loads of materials and Renown |
Common Misclicks and Feel Adjustments#
- Turning off camera follow in the settings reduces view rotation during air combos — steadier handling early on
- Precision dodge timing is fairly generous — deliberately slow your input rhythm while practicing to find the exact moment an enemy attack comes out
- Torgal’s command cooldown is independent of Clive’s — get in the habit of weaving commands into combat and the pressure drops noticeably
