Path of Exile 2 Beginner’s Guide#
Path of Exile 2 is currently in Early Access, so step one of getting in isn’t picking a class — it’s understanding “where do I enter, does it cost money, do characters get wiped.” This page covers those in the actual order you’ll face them; only verified mechanics are included.
Three things to know before entering#
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Access | Early Access requires purchasing a Supporter Pack to play |
| No wipes | The developer has confirmed Early Access is wipe-free; progress you invest now is kept |
| Free at 1.0 | The international version goes free-to-play on 2026-12-11; if you’d rather not pay, wait and enter then |
Step 1: Pick a platform#
| Platform | Who it suits |
|---|---|
| Standalone PC client / Steam / Epic | International-version players; playable now in Early Access |
| PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X|S | Console players; supports cross-play and cross-progression |
| WeGame | Players of the Chinese version, Path of Exile: Jianglin, launching 2026-12-18; pre-registration required first |
The Chinese and international versions run on separate servers and separate economies; decide which side before investing — progress does not transfer between them.
Step 2: Pick a class#
Your class defines your starting point, but three things first:
- Classes are gender-locked; you cannot choose gender.
- Any class can use any weapon and skill — class/weapon pairings are leveling suggestions, not restrictions.
- Seven classes are open: Warrior, Mercenary, Ranger, Witch, Monk, Sorceress, Huntress.
A practical way to choose is matching by attribute lean:
| Your preferred style | Attribute direction | Classes to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Melee front-line bruiser | Strength | Warrior |
| Mid-to-long-range shooting | Dexterity / Strength | Mercenary (crossbow) |
| Ranged kiting | Dexterity | Ranger (bow), Huntress (spear / shield) |
| Spell damage | Intelligence | Sorceress, Witch |
| Close-quarters combos | Intelligence / Dexterity | Monk (staff) |
Pick “wrong” and nothing breaks: weapons and skills aren’t class-restricted, and real playstyle differences come from the skill gems you socket and the Ascendancy you choose.
Step 3: Learn the new controls#
Combat is faster than the original and the controls were rebuilt:
- Movement is on the keyboard with WASD, no longer primarily mouse-click walking.
- The Sorceress can cast while moving — run-and-gun spell play is viable.
- Exact keybinds follow the in-game settings; at the start, press through your movement, dodge and skill binds once to build feel.
Step 4: Learn three core systems#
The leveling period floods you with information; getting these three right beats memorizing any guide:
| System | The minimum you need to understand |
|---|---|
| Skill gems | Skills come from gems; Early Access already has hundreds of active and support gems, and your main skill takes shape from gem pairing |
| Gear sockets | Gear has sockets and socket-linking (links), and skill scaling depends on this system |
| The Atlas | The endgame is built around the Atlas (the world map system); at minimum know it exists while leveling |
Seasons and saves: is your progress safe#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does Early Access wipe | No — officially confirmed |
| What happens at league end | Characters move to the non-league area; items kept but the economy is separated |
| So does my gear still count | Items don’t vanish; they just can’t circulate in the new league’s economy |
What this mechanic means: currency and gear invested during a league are real — they follow your character afterward; you simply can’t spend that wealth in the next league’s market.
Five common beginner mistakes#
| Mistake | The better approach |
|---|---|
| Treating your class as a ceiling | Weapons and skills are fully open; don’t let “what my class should use” cage your build thinking |
| Researching endgame minutiae on day one | Get movement and your main skill flowing first; go deep on the Atlas in the endgame |
| Dumping all materials into one item | The socket system rewards long-term investment; in leveling, spend on key slots |
| Picking a class on someone else’s recommendation | Choose by attribute and control preference — someone else’s build may not fit your hands |
| Worrying that buying in now wastes money | No wipes is confirmed; progress tied to the Supporter Pack carries into 1.0 |
Common questions#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Must I have played the original? | No — this is an independent system, and the story is a new starting point |
| Is the Supporter Pack worth it now? | If you want to play immediately, it’s the ticket; to just try it, wait for the free launch |
| What if I pick the wrong weapon first? | Swap anytime — classes don’t restrict weapons or skills |
| Is there couch co-op? | Yes — both console and PC support local co-op |
What this page does not cover#
The following leveling information has no verifiable source on this site and won’t be invented here; test in-game or wait for later versions:
- Per-class leveling skill pairings and passives routes.
- Story pacing by level and expected clear times.
- Quantified gear-affix priority standards.
These require the live version to verify; this page updates when reliable material appears.
