Combat System#
Weapon Overview#
Kratos wields three signature weapons: the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos, and the Draupnir Spear. Each has its own moveset, skill tree, and elemental traits. Swapping weapons mid-fight is key to maximizing damage and adaptability, and Atreus adds his own bow and runic summons.
| Weapon | Element | Traits | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leviathan Axe | Frost | Precise throws, remote recall, high single-target damage | Ranged pressure, interrupting enemies |
| Blades of Chaos | Fire | Area attacks, crowd control, sustained burn | Clearing mobs, burning vine obstacles |
| Draupnir Spear | Wind | Fast strings, elemental detonation, high stun | Elites, shattering gold fissures |

Shield System#
Parry technique Practice pressing L1 the instant an enemy attack is about to land. After a successful parry, immediately follow with R1 or R2 to trigger a special counter. The rune “Shield of Conviction” extends the parry window — recommended for beginners.
Spartan Rage#
- Fury — the base form; heals on hit; good for survival.
- Valor — a single heavy strike that also heals; high burst damage.
Elemental Damage#
Exploiting elemental counters greatly improves combat efficiency. Chain elemental combos: freeze enemies with frost first, then shatter them with fire for bonus damage. Water surfaces can be frozen with frost attacks to create new fighting platforms. Fire ignites oil pots and red plants for area explosions.
Combo Tips#
- Weapon-swap cancel: switching weapons during attack recovery cancels it, enabling seamless strings.
- Air combo: R2 launches an enemy, follow with a jump attack, then a ground chase.
- Ranged + melee mix: throw the axe/spear, immediately melee, then press Triangle to recall and detonate after the ranged hit lands.
- Parry opener: after a successful parry, chain a heavy Runic Attack so its full damage lands.
- Element cycle: freeze → burn → windburst stun → execution finish.
Master these and you will stay in control even on high difficulty.

Cooldown Quick Reference#
| Skill Type | Cooldown | Usage Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Light Runic Attacks | 30-60s | Open boss fights with them; recast as soon as the cooldown ends |
| Heavy Runic Attacks | 90-120s | Use when the boss is stunned/staggered |
| Spartan Rage | Full rage meter | Lifesaver at low health or during boss burst phases |
| Atreus runic arrows | 25-40s | Interrupt red-circle attacks and build stun |
Advanced Combos#
| Combo | Input | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Frost opener | R2 (charged) → R1×3 → L2+R1 | Freeze, then burst with light attacks |
| Fire spin | R1×2 → R2 → L2+R2 (swap weapon) → R1 | Dual-weapon string with big area damage |
| Parry triple | L1 (timed block) → R1 (counter) → R2 → L1+R1 | Maximize damage after a parry |
| Spartan burst | L3+R3 → mash R1 → R2 finisher | Comeback at low health — safer with a Resurrection Stone |
Combat Takeaways#
Playstyles and Loadout Ideas#
Shield Choice#
| Shield | Traits | Recommended Scenes |
|---|---|---|
| Stone Wall Shield | High defense, fast stagger recovery after a guard break | Elites with high attack frequency |
| Guardian Shield | Large parry window | Beginners practicing parries |
| Dauntless Shield | Successful parries extend enemy stagger | Veteran damage builds |
| Elemental Shield | Parries add elemental damage | Elemental cycle builds |
No shield is strictly better; the key is matching your playstyle. Start with the Guardian Shield and switch to the Dauntless Shield once comfortable — the payoff gap is significant.
Runic Attack Pairing Principles#
Each weapon equips two light Runic Attacks and one heavy. Light runes deal less damage but cool down fast for sustained pressure; heavy runes hit hard but cool down long — save them for enemy staggers or downed bosses. Recommended pairings:
| Weapon | Light Rune (recommended) | Heavy Rune (recommended) |
|---|---|---|
| Leviathan Axe | Frost Blast | Winter’s Rage |
| Blades of Chaos | Blazing Storm | Rage of Tartarus |
| Draupnir Spear | Windburst | Valhalla Impact |
Three Core Playstyles#
Elemental cycle: freeze → burn → wind detonation → execution. The core idea is chaining elemental statuses so enemies stay controlled. Lowest execution load, great for exploring and story push; recommended for most players.
Parry crit build: open with Dauntless Shield parries into heavy Runic Attacks for bursts. Stack crit rate and crit damage; pairs excellently with Berserker set bonuses. The downside is extreme parry-timing demands — one miss breaks the flow; for advanced players who know enemy movesets.
Spartan Rage survival: treat rage as an emergency resource, not routine output. Suppress with Runic Attacks, pop rage to heal and counter when near death, and pair with Resurrection Stones for double insurance. A steady approach for high-difficulty bosses.
Advanced Weapon Swapping#
The three weapons have clear roles in combat; build the habit of “swapping weapons at least once per string”:
- The Leviathan Axe handles opening control; freezing sharply cuts enemy counterattack frequency.
- The Blades of Chaos handle cleanup; fire’s area damage shreds mobs.
- The Draupnir Spear handles guard breaks and finishing; its detonation damage has the highest ceiling of all weapons.
- Swapping instantly cancels the previous weapon’s recovery — the key operation for seamless strings.
Combo Templates#
| String | Use |
|---|---|
| Axe freeze → swap to Blades spin → swap to Spear detonation | Full lockdown on elites |
| Parry → heavy rune → sprint chase | Boss stagger window burst |
| Spear throw → recall detonation → axe heavy | Ranged chip into melee |
Note that Kratos’s basic strings pay off little against very large enemies; in those cases lean on shield pressure and Runic interrupts to create execution windows.
