Main Quest Walkthrough#
Walkthrough Overview#
Fallout 4 has no formal “chapters” — the main quest is one continuous storyline, and you are free to explore the Commonwealth wasteland at any point. Broadly it splits into four big stages: the prologue, early investigation, the mid-game faction decision, and the endgame showdown. Each stage’s goals, unlocks, and recommended levels are in the table below.
Stage Breakdown#
| Stage | Time estimate | Main content | Recommended level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prologue | About 1-2 hours | Vault 111, the nuclear blast, character creation | 1-2 |
| Early game | About 8-15 hours | Sanctuary, Red Rocket, the Diamond City main line | 2-15 |
| Mid-game | About 15-30 hours | Following leads, faction side quests, the teleporter | 15-35 |
| Late game | About 30-45 hours | Final missions, the faction showdown, multiple endings | 35-50 |
On Leveling and the Finish Line#
Fallout 4 has no level cap — the higher you go, the more perks you can take. But the final main-quest encounters don’t demand much. If you just want to finish, the mid and late main quest sit at a comfortable difficulty for a practiced player around level 20-40; grinding levels or knocking out lots of side quests will also flatten the curve considerably. Challenge yourself by rushing the main line instead.
Prologue: Vault 111 and the Bomb#
How It Starts#
The game opens on an ordinary day in 2077, before the Great War. You are at home with your family when the nuclear alert sounds, and everyone follows the neighbors to a nearby vault. This whole stretch is an automated cutscene sequence — just follow the prompts to the vault entrance.
| Step | Content | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Choose your character’s appearance and name | Your last look before entering the vault |
| Reaching the vault | Enter Vault 111 | You will be cryogenically frozen |
| Awakening | Wake up in the cryo pod | The vault is empty |
| Family | Witness the abduction, then head for the exit | Follow the guidance |
Exploring Vault 111#
When you wake, you are locked inside your cryo pod and the vault is deserted. Clear a handful of vermin, scavenge what weapons and supplies you can, and pass the other frozen residents — including the scene that reveals your son Shaun has been taken.
Key flow:
- Collect a weapon and small-caliber ammo for everyone in the vault
- Find the elevator and escape route to the surface
- When you leave the vault, the view opens onto the ruined outskirts of Boston
Stepping Out Into the Commonwealth#
Beyond the vault door, the world opens up completely. Your first real quest sends you to nearby Sanctuary, then on to the Red Rocket Truck Stop, and eventually all the way to Diamond City. This stretch doubles as the tutorial zone that teaches the basic survival mechanics.
Early-Game Priorities#
Sanctuary#
Straight out of the vault, Sanctuary is the first stop for exploration and building:
| Priority | Notes |
|---|---|
| Found the settlement | Unlocks the settlement system |
| Collect resources | Gather wood, steel, and other junk materials |
| Side quests | Help the locals deal with threats |
| Home base | Works as your main early-game stronghold |
Red Rocket Truck Stop#
Red Rocket sits southeast of Sanctuary and is a classic early supply point:
- A vendor (sometimes randomly spawned) sells ammo and supplies
- A workshop lets you mod weapons and armor
- The adjacent gas station works as a power armor charging point
Diamond City#
Diamond City is the Commonwealth’s biggest settlement and the hub of the entire main line:
- The Diamond City Market: merchants of every stripe
- Nick Valentine: the synth detective holding crucial leads
- Story leads: opportunities to advance the main quest and build faction ties
- All kinds of side quests and affinity-building chances
Reaching Diamond City completes the “When Freedom Calls” achievement — a major early milestone. From here the main quest steers you into tracking leads and hunting for your son’s whereabouts by any means necessary.
Following the Trail to Shaun#
The Core Quest: Finding Your Son#
Fallout 4’s core motivation: you wake from the vault to find your son Shaun has been kidnapped, and the wasteland becomes your search ground. Every step of the hunt peels back the face of a hidden organization. This missing-child throughline spans the whole game and is the key that unlocks the faction arcs and the teleporter quest.
| Tracking stage | Lead | Key location |
|---|---|---|
| First inquiries | The detective holding your leads — Nick | Diamond City |
| The military trail | A trail of military transports | All over Boston |
| Infiltration | Tapping into the teleporter | The teleporter quest |
| The truth | The Institute revealed | The final reveal |
As the leads advance, you will make contact with each power in turn and come to know every player in the wasteland.
Mid-Game: Faction Choices and Side Quests#
The Main Factions#
By mid-game the main quest makes clear that the Institute is the true target of your search — and by then you have met the three outside powers. Listed by their weight in the main line:
| Faction | Nature | Pros and cons |
|---|---|---|
| Brotherhood of Steel | A military-technological power | Strongest combat force, but drags you into more conflict |
| The Railroad | An underground resistance | Stealthy and covert — lives and dies on sneaking |
| The Minutemen | A settler militia | The most people-friendly; ideal for settlement builds |
| The Institute | The shadowy synth-makers | Teleporter technology and advanced science |
The four factions are not wholly opposed, but the ending forces a choice — usually you can back only one.
Brotherhood of Steel Side Quests#
The Brotherhood is the hardest-hitting faction, and its questline is full of combat operations and tech acquisition:
| Quest | Goal | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| The airship arrival | Establish the Brotherhood’s airship | The strongest air power in the Commonwealth |
| Tech recovery | Collect intelligence | Upgraded equipment |
| Strike operations | Disrupt the Railroad | Faction relations |
Railroad Side Quests#
The Railroad line runs on intelligence and sabotage — a natural fit for stealth builds:
| Quest | Goal | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden station | Build a secret relay network | Intelligence |
| Code-name ops | Infiltration and puzzle-solving | Stealth gear |
| Sabotage missions | Stop atrocities | Weapons |
Minutemen Side Quests#
The Minutemen line leans hardest on settlement growth:
| Quest | Goal | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Rescue | Save settlements under attack | Happiness and reputation |
| Defense | Hold settlements | Settlement stability |
| Home defense | Repel raiders | Economic gains |
When to Decide#
Key nodes like the Bunker Hill standoff and the Mass Fusion decision put faction friction in your face. The main quest’s decisive choice arrives at the teleporter and Institute stage. Before you commit, think hard about which faction you truly want to back — it determines how each region of the map reacts to your ending.
Mid-Game Prep and Settlement Growth#
Stockpiling Resources and Gear#
The mid-game is where the snowball starts:
| Resource | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Caps | Trading, selling junk, quest rewards |
| Materials | Collect junk, break down components |
| Weapons | Upgrade and mod at the workbench |
| Settlements | Build farms, water, and defenses |
Settlement Growth#
The Minutemen route is built on the settlement system. Plan your settlements well and you gain a steady supply of water, food, and shelter. Grow places like Sanctuary step by step and assign settlers their jobs.
Late Game and Endings#
The Final Missions#
The endgame centers on assaulting the Institute — or its teleporter — and each faction has a different “final solution”:
| Faction | Final action | How the ending feels |
|---|---|---|
| The Minutemen | Retake the Institute, defend the wasteland | Hard-won victory, hope defended |
| Brotherhood of Steel | Storm and destroy the Institute | Power and authoritarian order |
| The Railroad | Destroy the Institute | A covert end |
| The Institute | Defend the Institute | Science in control |
Once the final action is done, the story wraps up — and the game lets you keep exploring and questing in the post-game world (the world persists after the credits).
Multiple Endings Tips#
Fallout 4 has several endings depending on which faction wins. To experience multiple endings and their achievements:
- Back up saves: manually copy your save before every critical decision
- Multiple playthroughs: push different endings with different characters
Pacing the Wasteland: Key Tips#
A few pointers that pay off across the entire playthrough:
| Phase | Tip |
|---|---|
| Prologue | Make full use of the cryo pods and the vault’s resources |
| Early game | Gather junk diligently — scrap it and mod with it |
| Mid-game | Balance side quests against the main line |
| Late game | Stockpile chems, watch your teleporter protection |
| Post-game | Keep exploring and collecting freely |
Common New-Player Slips#
| Slip | How to avoid |
|---|---|
| Rushing the main quest | Do a healthy share of side quests to raise level and power |
| Ignoring settlements | Early construction pays off enormously |
| Traveling without healing and RadAway | Carry plenty of food, water, and meds |
| Neglecting power armor upkeep | Keep fusion cores stocked and maintain the frame |
Completion Time Reference#
| Route | Estimated time |
|---|---|
| Main quest only | About 20-30 hours |
| Main quest + some side quests | About 40-60 hours |
| Main quest + full completion | About 80-120 hours |
| Survival mode, full exploration | 100+ hours |
Closing Thoughts#
