Control: Resonant Main Story Walkthrough#
The main story of Control: Resonant centers on Dylan Faden’s search for his sister Jesse, unfolding across several zones of a warped Manhattan. The complete mission list has not been fully revealed yet, so what follows maps the story’s flow using the confirmed representative missions and zones.
The full set of story missions and endings has not been completely verified, so this page provides a story progression framework built on confirmed nodes. Always treat the in-game mission names as the final word.
Overall Story Framework#
| Stage | Zone | Key Node |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Oldest House | Dylan is released and enters Manhattan |
| Tutorial | Downtown | Orientation mission |
| Familiarization | Downtown fault | Double Jump, Elevate, and Rush unlocked |
| Progression | Each functional zone | Zone bosses and faults |
| Deep dive | West Incursion Zone | Shift fault and The Dancer boss |
| Turning point | Park | The Collective boss |
| Conclusion | Evacuation Zone | Reach fault and closing in on Jesse |
Opening: From the Oldest House into Manhattan#
The story kicks off with Dylan Faden being released from the Oldest House. His goal is clear — enter a Manhattan warped by the Hiss and the Mold, and find his sister Jesse. This is also where the tutorial and your first new abilities begin.
Everything here doubles as onboarding: movement, combat, and the fault system are all introduced in a controlled environment before Manhattan opens up.
The Orientation Mission#
The Orientation mission takes place in the Downtown zone and is the biggest early story node. It walks you through the controls and the combat loop, and grants your first movement abilities at a fault.
| Ability Unlocked | Location |
|---|---|
| Double Jump | Downtown Orientation mission fault |
| Elevate | Downtown Orientation mission fault |
| Rush | Downtown Orientation mission fault |
Crossing the Functional Zones#
As the story moves forward, Dylan leaves Downtown for Manhattan’s other functional zones. In these areas you will face resonant beings such as The Artist, and each zone’s fault unlocks new movement options and powers.
There is no strict order forcing you through every zone at once, but the story keeps nudging you toward the next resonant being, so expect a steady rhythm of unlock, fight, move on.
West Incursion Zone#
The West Incursion Zone is a major stop on the critical path. It is where the Shift ability is unlocked and where The Dancer boss waits. The gravity control Shift grants will fundamentally change how you read the arena and position yourself.
Strongly recommended: get comfortable with Shift in this zone. It pays off enormously in both later fights and exploration.
The Park and The Collective#
The Park is a mid-to-late story zone, and its resonant boss The Collective is a major gate on the way into the final act. Beating it unlocks resonance abilities such as Spore Burst or Growth.
Evacuation Zone#
The Evacuation Zone is one of the last story areas. Its fault unlocks Reach, which pulls you toward orb-like points and massively improves traversal efficiency.
By this point your toolkit should cover most situations, so the zone is less about learning new verbs and more about testing how well you have combined everything so far.
Story Length#
Going by Remedy’s own figures and media coverage, the main story runs about 30 hours, with full completion and collection around 50 hours. The default difficulty is on the high side, and an official assist mode is available for players who want to tune it down.
Those figures come from Remedy’s stated targets rather than a finished day-one playthrough, so treat them as a solid estimate rather than a guarantee.
Story Progression Tips#
- Prioritize ability faults: unlock each zone’s movement ability before you start exploring.
- Story bosses are the key: defeating resonant beings brings back resonance abilities and pushes the plot forward.
- Make use of assist mode: turn it on to lower the pressure whenever a fight stalls you.
- Zone level affects the shop: knocking out zone activities along the way strengthens your supplies.
Ability Unlock Chain in the Story#
| Story Node | Node Type | Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Orientation mission | Fault | Double Jump, Elevate, Rush |
| Downtown Orientation mission | Boss | The Artist |
| West Incursion Zone | Fault | Shift |
| West Incursion Zone | Boss | The Dancer |
| Park | Boss | The Collective |
| Evacuation Zone | Fault | Reach |
Pacing Recommendations for the Story#
The story is not a pure sprint. It alternates between three rhythms: unlocking movement abilities, defeating resonant being bosses, and advancing the plot. Whenever you reach a new zone, finish the story nodes tied to it (faults or bosses) first, then loop back for side content and exploration. That way you never get stuck with a limited toolkit, and you avoid unnecessary backtracking.
| Pacing Step | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Story fault first | Unlocks the new movement ability |
| Then zone boss | Brings back resonance abilities |
| Explore and collect | Raises the zone level |
| Return to the story | The plot keeps moving forward |
Difficulty Curve by Story Stage#
| Stage | Difficulty Trend | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Opening: Oldest House | Tutorial | Learn the controls |
| Downtown: Orientation | Gentle | Practice the stagger-execute loop |
| West Incursion Zone | Rising | Get fluent with Shift |
| Park | Above average | Lean on health packs and abilities |
| Evacuation Zone | High | Position with Reach and execute cleanly |
How to Break Through Story Sticking Points#
| Sticking Point | Fix |
|---|---|
| Basic attacks barely dent the boss | Break stagger with a charged Smash or the Drill |
| Healing cannot keep up | Keep minor enemies alive as health packs |
| Dodging area attacks | Use Shift to change planes |
| Cannot find the route | Activate the map towers and sensors |
A Closer Look at Story Length#
Officially, the story sits at roughly 30 hours, but that number shifts depending on whether you pick up side content along the way and how thoroughly you explore. Speedrunners can focus on faults and boss nodes, while players chasing the full experience can linger in every zone. Either way, how quickly you internalize the stagger-and-execute loop decides how much time fights will cost you.
The story is Dylan’s journey to find Jesse, and it doubles as the opening act of your ability unlocks and your path to full completion. Only after finishing the story does your full exploration of warped Manhattan truly open up.
