Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 FAQ#
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (COD6, or MW2 for short) is the first-person shooter Infinity Ward released in 2009. Below, the questions players ask most are organized into four categories: “Campaign”, “Special Ops”, “Multiplayer”, and “Systems & Mechanics”.
Campaign#
How many missions does the campaign have, and how are the acts split?#
The campaign has 15 missions across 3 acts. Act I covers the Rangers (US Army Rangers) and Task Force 141 in Afghanistan, Rio, and Siberia; Act II shifts to defending Washington D.C. against the Russian invasion; Act III is Task Force 141 closing in on Makarov and Shepherd. A full run takes about 6 to 8 hours — a classic campaign you can finish in one sitting.
How hard is Veteran, really?#
On Veteran, enemy accuracy and damage rise sharply — in many situations you go down after 2 to 3 hits. The difficulty is not “can’t win” but “can’t take a hit”: you have almost zero margin for error, and staying exposed too long or mispositioning lets window and rooftop enemies suppress you instantly. These are the widely agreed choke points:
| Mission stage | Source of difficulty | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Rio favela chase | Narrow alleys, crossfire from above | Flashbang before you push, never run in a straight line, lean on cover and elevation — an SMG beats a rifle here |
| Washington street defense | Open ground, endless respawns | Use tanks or other vehicles as moving cover, and remember to grab ammo and grenades at supply points |
| White House interior clearing | Dense rooms, enemies firing from windows on every floor | Clear room by room, back off the instant you see a grenade land, and prioritize the snipers behind windows |
| Safe house computer download | Hold a fixed spot against a constant enemy tide | Anchor a room corner with a high-damage rifle aimed at the door — never stand at a window |
| Hidden mission “Mile High Club” | Timed run, zero pauses allowed | Memorize enemy positions, sprint the optimal route from the start, and steady your aim for the final headshots to save the hostage |
The universal Veteran approach is to push only within one checkpoint at a time — after clearing a checkpoint, pause, regroup, and continue, so one mistake never costs you an entire stretch of progress.
Can I skip the “No Russian” mission?#
Yes. The game shows a content warning at startup and lets you choose to skip the mission. Skipping it affects no achievements and does not block campaign progress — players who mind the content can skip it and continue without hesitation.
Why do enemies in some missions “never run out”?#
Modern Warfare 2 uses a zone-based spawn system: as long as you have not pushed to a trigger point, that zone keeps replenishing enemies. So the correct strategy is never to clear the map from where you stand, but to read the window to advance — find safe connections between pieces of cover, suppress and move at the same time, and once you reach the next checkpoint the spawns stop on their own.
How do I unlock the hidden mission “Mile High Club”?#
It unlocks after you complete the full campaign on Veteran. The mission is a timed run — the “most hardcore challenge” players love to talk about.
Special Ops#
What is Special Ops?#
Special Ops is a two-player co-op mode that stands beside the campaign, offering 23 standalone challenge missions that can be selected without finishing the campaign. The mission types are extremely varied — stealth takedowns, holdout defense, vehicle chases and more. Some challenges are soloable, but the design leans toward two-player coordination.
How are the Special Ops challenges tiered?#
The 23 challenges are split into 3 difficulty tiers (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie), unlocking in sequence. Each mission carries a star rating, and a three-star rating demands stricter completion conditions — time limits, kill caps, or extra objectives. Full three stars is the hardest class of Special Ops achievement and requires two players in tight sync.
Should I play Special Ops or multiplayer first?#
Play Special Ops first. It lets you bank experience early and get a feel for the weapons, while multiplayer offers a thin pool of weapons and attachments at low levels. Transitioning through Special Ops makes the eventual move to multiplayer far smoother.
Multiplayer#
How do the level cap and Prestige work?#
Multiplayer’s level cap is 70, and at max level you may choose to Prestige, up to 10 times. Prestige resets your unlocks for weapons, perks, killstreaks, and attachments, but keeps achievements, titles, emblems, and challenge progress. Prestige grants no stat advantage — it trades your progress for exclusive Prestige emblems and titles, a pursuit strictly for players who want to run the grind again and flash a special badge.
Is Prestige actually worth it?#
| Prestige count | Example emblem styles | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1st to 5th | Copper/silver/gold/red/blue skulls and more | Each prestige earns a differently colored emblem |
| 6th to 9th | Flaming skull, cross skull, and other escalating styles | Gradually complete the full set |
| 10th | Every emblem style unlocked | No extra stat rewards |
If you are chasing the deepest unlocks (say, mastering a specific gun) or already have a clear plan against your opponents’ tactics and loadouts, Prestige helps you re-plan your upgrade route; if you just want one comfortable fixed loadout and dread regrinding, skip it.
What multiplayer modes are there?#
Launch ships Team Deathmatch, Domination, Demolition, Capture the Flag, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All, Headquarters, and Ground War, plus third-person variants. Ground War expands lobbies to 9 vs 9 on large maps with denser combat — a good mode for farming killstreaks. Each mode’s core objective dictates your loadout:
| Mode | Core objective | Loadout lean |
|---|---|---|
| Team Deathmatch | First team to the kill target wins | Balanced and broadly useful |
| Domination | Capture and hold 3 flags to score over time | A mix of rushing and holding |
| Demolition / Search & Destroy | Round-based — plant or defuse, one life per round | Steady, careful, recon-first |
| Capture the Flag | Steal the enemy flag and return it to your base | High mobility, unlimited sprint |
| Kill Confirmed | Pick up fallen dog tags to confirm the score | Close-quarters pickup and route control |
| Ground War | 9 vs 9 large-scale combat | Pairs well with high-tier killstreaks |
How do I choose perks?#
Perks fill 3 slots, unlocking gradually with level. Three classic build philosophies:
| Playstyle | Slot 1 | Slot 2 | Slot 3 | Best scenario |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rushing | Marathon (unlimited sprint) | Lightweight or Stopping Power | Ninja (silent movement) | High mobility, close-quarters brawling |
| Anchored gunfights | Bling | Stopping Power (more damage) | Ninja | Mid-to-long-range suppression from a fixed position |
| Stealth flanking | Marathon or Bling | Cold-Blooded (no UAV lock) | Ninja | Side routes, dodging UAVs and thermal |
“Ninja” plus “Cold-Blooded” is the core of stealth builds: Ninja erases your footsteps, while Cold-Blooded stops enemy UAVs, killstreaks, and thermal from locking you easily. Run-and-gun builds instead pair Marathon with a high-fire-rate SMG and win through mobility.
Systems & Mechanics#
Which killstreaks should I pick?#
Killstreak rewards trigger on consecutive kills, from the 3-kill UAV to the 25-kill Tactical Nuke (which ends the match outright in your favor). The rewards’ strength and difficulty vary enormously across the ladder:
| Kills | Reward | Role |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | UAV | Low-barrier recon — shows enemy positions |
| 4 | Care Package | Random airdrop that can roll high-tier rewards |
| 5 | Predator Missile | Remote-guided strike |
| 6 | Precision Airstrike | Bomb a marked area |
| 7 | Harrier Strike | Air run first, then hovering attack |
| 9 | Stealth Bomber | Full-map bombing — never shows on radar |
| 15 | EMP | Disables enemy electronics and killstreaks |
| 25 | Tactical Nuke | Ends the match with an instant win |
Newcomers should start with low-barrier combos like “UAV (3) + Care Package (4) + Precision Airstrike (6)”; only veterans chase high-ladder streaks for a Nuke run. Whether to chase the Nuke depends on how consistently you can rack up kills — forcing 25 straight kills usually costs more than it returns.
Can the PC version still play online?#
Online matchmaking on PC depends on your copy and platform. The online environment has shifted a lot over the years — on older clients or niche platforms, lobbies may be thin, so check the current player community for your platform. The actual matchmaking status depends on your client and servers — no absolute guarantees here.
Graphics and settings — is this game demanding on hardware?#
As a 2009 release, Modern Warfare 2 has a fairly low hardware bar. The priority is not “max every effect” but stable frame rate and clear long-range visibility — in multiplayer, spotting distant enemies first decides the fight. For a competitive feel, lock in a stable framerate, turn off expensive effects that add little competitively, and spend the headroom on clarity and smoothness.
How is the Chinese language experience?#
The game offers Simplified and Traditional Chinese interfaces and subtitles, so Chinese players can read the story and menus without barriers. The campaign carries plenty of dialogue and callouts — Chinese subtitles make the plot much easier to follow.
Three Practical Reminders for New Players#
- Finish the campaign before touching multiplayer. The campaign teaches weapon feel, cover discipline, and push timing; multiplayer offers few early weapon choices, and jumping straight in means being steamrolled by high-level players.
- Don’t brute-force Veteran. When stuck, stop and ask “can a Flashbang/Smoke open this, can I take a detour, should I push to the next checkpoint first” — instead of charging the same enemies head-on over and over.
- Match your loadout to the mode. Capture the Flag and rushing want mobility; anchored holds want stability and precision. No single loadout wins every mode.
