Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Controls and Settings#
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) is a typical dual-platform first-person shooter on PC and consoles, and its controls condense into one closed loop: “move, aim, fire, tactical actions”. This page does not list the graphics presets every shooter shares; it focuses on MW2’s own control mechanics, how killstreaks are actually handled, and the settings that genuinely exist on PC and console. The rest of this page refers to the game as MW2.
Basic Keyboard and Mouse Controls#
MW2 on PC carries over the Modern Warfare series’ long-standing default keybinds, so the entry barrier is minimal. The table below lists only the absolutely core keys you can press with confidence; every other action is rebindable in the options.
| Action | Default key | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Move forward/back/left/right | W / S / A / D | The character strafes in the direction of the crosshair |
| Aim and fire | Left mouse button | Fires the primary weapon |
| Precision aim | Right mouse button | Raises the iron sights — accuracy improves dramatically |
| Sprint | Hold Shift | Faster movement — you cannot fire while sprinting |
| Crouch | C | A lower profile, quieter movement |
| Jump | Space | Can be combined with firing for jump shots |
| Reload | R | Reloads the current weapon’s magazine |
| Use | E | Pick up weapons, open doors, operate objectives |
| Melee | V | Attack up close with the knife and similar weapons |
| Scoreboard | Tab | Check both teams’ scores and killstreak status |
Core Control Mechanics Unique to MW2#
Match outcomes in MW2 often hinge not on raw aim but on mastery of a few tactical actions. These moves are MW2’s signature controls, setting it apart from later entries in the series:
| Mechanic | How to perform | Actual effect |
|---|---|---|
| Sprint-switch to pistol | Press a number key to swap to your secondary mid-sprint | Pistols move faster than rifles — most noticeable when rotating |
| Crouch walking | Move while crouched | Completely silent — never exposes your footsteps on the enemy’s radar |
| Jump shooting | Hold the right button and fire while jumping | Disrupts the enemy’s pre-aim — great for corner encounters |
| Prone shooting | Drop prone quickly and fire | Shrinks your hitbox — a staple of mid-to-long-range duels |
| Hold breath | Hold the right button after scoping a sniper rifle | Suppresses scope sway — the stabilizing tool before long-range flicks |
| Reload cancel | Switch weapons the instant a reload finishes, then switch back | Cuts the reload recovery animation, trimming the downtime by about half a second |
| Resting on cover | Triggered near the edge of cover | Reduces recoil and unnecessary exposure behind cover |
Actually Handling Killstreaks#
Killstreaks are not all one-button calls — several require you to take over the controls yourself, and this is the part of MW2’s control scheme that most needs practice:
| Reward | How it is handled | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| UAV | Runs automatically after the call-in | The HUD shows enemy red dots — no manual control needed |
| Predator Missile | Steer the missile with the mouse after the call-in | You can adjust the boost speed; predict enemy movement before impact |
| Precision Airstrike | Executes automatically after marking a direction | Trace the bombing run with the crosshair — aim at enemy concentrations |
| Harrier | Auto strafing after the call-in | Evacuate exposed positions the moment control switches back |
| AC-130 Gunship | Take the gunner seat and aim with the mouse in the thermal view | Three munitions share one ammo pool — pick by range |
| Tactical Nuke | One-button call at a 25 killstreak | Ends the match outright — no extra handling involved |
Console Gamepad Mappings#
The MW2 project’s PS3 and Xbox 360 controller layouts are essentially identical; the only real differences are the confirm key and the menu calls. The PS3 equivalents are shown in the PS3 column.
| Action | Xbox 360 | PS3 |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Left stick | Left stick |
| Camera | Right stick | Right stick |
| Precision aim | LT | L2 |
| Fire | RT | R2 |
| Sprint | Left stick click | L3 |
| Crouch | B | Circle |
| Reload | X | Square |
| Jump | A | Cross |
| Melee | Right stick click | R3 |
| Open menu | Start | Start button |
Real PC Settings#
MW2’s PC version keeps its slider menus to pure competitive and display adjustments — none of the flashy assist options. What actually shapes the feel is concentrated in the following items:
| Setting | What it does | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse sensitivity | Controls crosshair movement speed | Fine-tune until one full horizontal swipe completes about a 180-degree turn |
| Mouse acceleration | The mouse tracks more directly when off | Turn it off for stable, consistent aiming |
| Precision-aim sensitivity | A separate sensitivity once you aim down sights | Slightly lower than your hip-fire value favors spray tracking |
| Field of view | Determines how wide the lens is | Widen it as far as tolerable — helps spot enemies coming from the sides |
| Display mode | Fullscreen or windowed | Fullscreen has lower input latency |
| Brightness calibration | Calibrates the dark areas of the image | Avoid missing corner shadows on dark multiplayer maps |
| Speaker configuration | Stereo or surround | Surround better resolves footstep direction |
Settings Differences by Hardware Platform#
| Platform | Trait | Setting focus |
|---|---|---|
| High-refresh monitors | Higher frame rate ceiling — smoother tracking | Disable V-Sync and frame caps — chase low latency |
| Low-end laptops | Frame rate comes first | Lower render resolution and textures first — hold 60 FPS |
| Older consoles | Locked frame rate | Nothing to change — stay on defaults |
Veteran Difficulty Ground Rules#
On MW2’s Veteran difficulty, enemy damage is extreme and the margin for error is nearly zero. The rules below, proven over and over in real play, fit this game better than any “generic shooter tips”:
- Never stay exposed longer than two seconds: enemy lock-on is brutally fast — long exposure is suicide.
- Lead with flashbangs: toss a flash before pushing every corner that might hold enemies — this applies all the way through on Veteran.
- Enemies trigger by position: MW2’s spawns are tied to your push — before reaching the next trigger point, confirm the previous wave is cleared.
- Smoke for open ground: when you must cross an open area, throw smoke first to block the AI’s line of sight.
- Riot shield plus pistol: several tight rooms can be taken by blocking frontal fire with a riot shield and returning fire with the pistol.
- Checkpoints come first: stop and rest at every save point to avoid long stretches of repetition.
Special Ops Two-Player Coordination#
Special Ops is MW2’s fixed two-player co-op mode. The controls match the campaign, but a coordination dimension is added on top:
| Coordination point | Notes |
|---|---|
| Split the engagement | One player spots while the other suppresses — never have both exposed at once |
| Objective roles | Some missions need one player on the mechanism while the other clears — agree on who leads first |
| Kill points | Challenges award stars by performance — low-risk, high-reward targets pay best |
| Timed missions | Planning the route ahead beats improvising — do not burn time on detours |
