Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Walkthrough#

Campaign Structure Overview#

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign contains 15 missions split across 3 acts (Act I / II / III). A normal-difficulty run takes roughly 6 to 8 hours, while a full Veteran completion often demands 10 to 15 hours. The campaign has no branching endings — clear every mission in order to reach the finale, so the focus of this walkthrough is on each mission’s core objective, the most common choke points, and the progression calls you need to make on Veteran.

Act Missions Approx. length Highlights
Act I 5 About 2 hours Training, the Afghan front, the snowy infiltration, the airport incident, the Rio manhunt
Act II 5 About 2.5 hours The Washington defense, Rio rooftop combat, the oil-well push, indoor clearing, the Gulag prison
Act III 5 About 2.5 hours The White House assault, the safe-house raid, the EMP escape, the Afghan temple showdown, the hidden mission

Campaign progression relies on checkpoint autosaves. COD6 has no manual save menu — all you can do is reload the most recent checkpoint, so every checkpoint is a natural “node”. On Veteran, once you reach a new checkpoint, take a breather, mentally walk through the enemies and cover of the next stretch, and only then push on.

Key Characters#

Character Affiliation Role
Soap Task Force 141 One of the campaign’s protagonists — many missions follow his thread
Price Task Force 141 The legendary veteran — main operator of the Siberia and Afghanistan segments
Ghost Task Force 141 Assaulter — a familiar face throughout the operations
Roach Task Force 141 One of the characters you control in the second half of the campaign
Shepherd US supreme commander The nominal top brass — a pivotal figure in the story’s turning point
Makarov Terrorist organization The key villain who ignites the US-Russia conflict
Allen CIA undercover agent The character you play during the Act I airport incident

For the origins of this war, each faction’s motives, and how several characters end up in Acts II and III, see Story & World — this page covers only “how to fight”.

Act I#

Mission 1: S.S.D.D.#

The Afghan training course, built to teach movement, shooting, reloading, grenade throwing, melee, and other basics. Just follow the prompts through the shooting drills — failure is nearly impossible.

Veteran notes:

  • This mission is your warm-up — build your headshot and peek-shooting habits here.
  • Near the end there is a melee tutorial against a shielded soldier — follow the prompts, no real difficulty.

Mission 2: Team Player#

Follow General Shepherd and the Rangers as they push through an Afghan village, with tanks advancing alongside you.

Veteran notes:

  • Enemies fire from windows and rooftops in multiple directions — trading shots with your rifle alone gets you shredded by crossfire. Use a smoke grenade to cover each street crossing.
  • The tank is your best moving cover — hug its side and rear as you advance to soak up enormous frontal fire.
  • RPG troopers on rooftops are the biggest threat — deal with them first.

Mission 3: Cliffhanger#

Price and Soap infiltrate an enemy base in the Siberian mountains to steal submarine data and rescue an informant.

Veteran notes:

  • At the start, follow the prompts to silently assassinate sentries with your knife — avoid triggering a firefight at all costs, because once shots ring out, heavy reinforcements arrive.
  • The snow-slide section is controlled with the movement keys — simply avoid the trees and rocks ahead; there is no combat pressure here.
  • The finale is an escape from the base, ending with you seizing a helicopter to extract — focus purely on running.

Mission 4: No Russian#

The most controversial mission in the campaign — you play the undercover agent Allen alongside Makarov’s crew during an airport attack. The game shows a content warning at startup, and skipping this mission affects no achievements whatsoever. If it makes you uncomfortable, choose to skip it outright.

Veteran notes:

  • The mission is essentially a scripted sequence of walking with the group — just follow Makarov.
  • At the end Makarov turns his gun on you — that is story canon and cannot be changed.

Mission 5: Takedown#

Task Force 141 heads to Rio de Janeiro to hunt Makarov’s intelligence broker — threading between favela high-rises before breaching through a window.

Veteran notes:

  • The first half has civilians on site — do not harm them or you risk failing the mission.
  • In the rooftop and stairwell fights, use elevation to break line of sight and clear the high ground first.
  • In the final indoor run, a shotgun beats rifles by a wide margin.

Act II#

Mission 6: Wolverines!#

Russian forces invade Washington D.C. and the Rangers defend city blocks section by section while awaiting reinforcements. On Veteran this is widely regarded as one of the hardest missions, with open ground and endless respawning troops ready to crush you from every direction.

Veteran notes:

  • Never stand still in one spot — enemies respawn endlessly until you push to a trigger node. Move up immediately after clearing a wave, or the endless fire will grind you down.
  • The gas station holds extra ammo and a grenade launcher — don’t pass it by.
  • In the street-fighting stretch, grab ground RPGs to hit armored vehicles — never trade shots with armor directly.
  • The final garage defense requires holding out for a time — watch for grenade warnings and relocate the moment the red indicator appears.

Mission 7: Rumor Killer#

A high-speed chase across favela rooftops and narrow alleys in pursuit of the target.

Veteran notes:

  • Distances on the rooftops are close — an SMG suits this mission better than an assault rifle.
  • The roofs are full of gaps and drop-offs — watch your footing while sprinting; one fall restarts the run.
  • After the helicopter goes down, get off the route as quickly as possible — do not linger in the open.

Mission 8: Exodus#

Advance behind an armored convoy, defend the oil wells, then extract by helicopter.

Veteran notes:

  • As before, move with the tanks — they are your cover.
  • In the oil-well defense, tuck into a corner and never stay exposed long.
  • Before boarding the helicopter, wipe out the RPG troopers nearby — otherwise you may eat a rocket the instant you board.

Mission 9: Hot Zone#

Search for intel in the Brazilian favela — high-density close-quarters indoor combat and a nightmare for many players on Veteran.

Veteran notes:

  • Shotgun + Flashbang is the standard kit — one shot, one kill up close.
  • Before every door and every corner, throw a Flashbang first, then rush in.
  • Watch the second- and third-floor windows — fire comes from all sides, and clearing the ground floor means nothing.

Mission 10: The Uninvited#

Russian forces use an EMP to cripple the East Coast and the Rangers must cope without electronics. The second half enters the White House battle zone — the mission’s turning point.

Veteran notes:

  • The EMP disables every electronic device, including optical attachments like your Red Dot Sight — some scopes go black, so iron sights or mechanical sights are the safer bet.
  • In the second half, fighting at the White House spawns enemies at close range — keep moving and stay evasive.

Act III#

Mission 11: Whiskey Hotel#

Russian troops storm the White House and the Rangers fight alongside the Marines to retake it — one of the most famous missions in the campaign.

Veteran notes:

  • Pushing across the White House lawn, snipers hide behind windows — clear building by building and never stay exposed long.
  • Indoors there are grenades everywhere — relocate or drop prone the instant a red grenade warning appears.
  • The rooftop has a sequence where you down a helicopter with an RPG or Javelin — grab the launcher on command and hold your crosshair steady on the target.

Mission 12: The Safe House#

Task Force 141 raids Makarov’s safe house in Georgia, aiming to capture him and seize the intel.

Veteran notes:

  • The front yard is crawling with guards — suppress with grenades and Flashbangs before pushing.
  • Key node: once inside, the computer download requires you to hold out for about 45 seconds. Anchor a room corner with a high-damage weapon (an SCAR-H type) aimed at the doorway.
  • A major story twist lands at the end of this mission — spoilers omitted here.

Mission 13: The Eye of the Storm#

Price and Soap travel to Afghanistan hunting Shepherd, infiltrating a cave system before escaping on snowmobiles.

Veteran notes:

  • The caves are pitch dark — turn on night vision and your view improves dramatically.
  • You face a well-equipped force with sharp AI — don’t get greedy, break them down one by one behind cover.
  • The snowmobile chase at the exit is simply about steering around obstacles — focus on running.

Mission 14: Foolproof#

Price and Soap pursue Shepherd through the Afghan temple district — the final showdown of the story.

Veteran notes:

  • The temple push is heavily garrisoned and includes armored jeeps — destroy them with RPGs; shooting them with rifles is painfully inefficient.
  • In the final fight, complete the melee QTE as prompted and finish with a knife execution — follow the on-screen rhythm.

Mission 15: Mile High Club (Hidden Mission)#

A hidden mission unlocked after completing all 14 missions on Veteran, cleared within 1 minute 30 seconds — one of the most infamous hardcore challenges in COD6 and the series as a whole. Many players grind the whole game just for “Veteran completion plus this mission”.

Veteran notes:

  • Never stop moving — run, shoot, run. Any pause leaves you out of time.
  • Memorization is mandatory: know each room’s enemy positions and spawn directions, and try to drop every target in one bullet.
  • Rush the right-hand route at the start — the widely accepted faster path.
  • In the final hostage rescue, steady your crosshair for the headshots — never panic-fire and throw your aim.

Veteran Push-or-Pull Decision Rules#

Scenario Read Countermeasure
Open ground Fire from multiple directions Smoke first, advance cover to cover or behind vehicles — never stand still
Corners/doorways Unknown threat inside Flashbang before you rush; peek the far corners before entering
Rooftops/high ground Snipers or RPGs possible up high Clear elevated threats first, then the ground floor
Armored vehicles Rifles barely scratch them Grab an RPG or another explosive — never trade shots head-on
Endless-spawn nodes Enemies keep coming Clear the current wave and push immediately — never grind in place

Checkpoint and Retry Strategy#

  1. On Veteran, “reload checkpoint and retry” is simply how the game is played — every checkpoint is progress you earned, and retrying is nothing to be ashamed of.
  2. Before entering each new battlefield, note where your nearest checkpoint is and judge whether that stretch is worth attempting in one run.
  3. If you are stuck for more than 20 to 30 minutes, change your approach: take a different attack route, switch weapon types, or retime your Flashbang/Smoke usage — instead of grinding the same tactic into a wall.
  4. Before a big push, top off your weapon ammo and special grenades — many missions let you resupply right before the trigger point, so refill first and then start the fight.

Completion and Hidden Content#

After clearing the game on Regular or Hardened, players can take on Veteran. Completing the campaign on Veteran unlocks the hidden mission “Mile High Club”. On top of that, the campaign is scattered with Intel notebooks — full collection ties into a hidden bonus and achievements, so pick them up as you go if you are interested.
