The Blood of Dawnwalker Magic and Rune System#
🔯This page covers the game’s Witchcraft system. Its rules are harder than you might expect: it only works during the day, because the mark heals once night falls.
1. The Basic Rules of Witchcraft#
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Active window | Daytime only (human form) |
| Prerequisite | A rune mark carved on the body |
| Mark location | Coen’s runes are carved on his left arm |
| What happens at night | The mark heals and witchcraft stops working entirely |
| How you learn it | Read a manual to unlock, then spend skill points at a shrine |
The “heals at nightfall” rule ties magic straight into the day/night system, and explains why you have to switch to a different approach after dark.
2. What the Rune Mark Is#
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Form | A scar-like mark carved into the left arm |
| State | Active by day, healed after dusk |
| Function | Decides which witchcraft spells are usable |
| Limit | Does not affect vampire abilities; the two systems do not overlap |
3. The Three Categories of Witchcraft#
The developers split witchcraft into three directions.
| Category | Use |
|---|---|
| Offensive | Direct damage and suppression |
| Defensive | Protection, damage reduction, defusing threats |
| Recon | Investigating scenes, spotting hidden clues and targets |
The third category is the one most easily overlooked. Plenty of players treat witchcraft as nothing but a damage tool, but recon spells hold a very high place in exploration and quest puzzles.
4. Publicly Revealed Spell Examples#
| Spell | Trait |
|---|---|
| Burning Blood | Deals damage over time |
| Wild Heart | Makes the target attack everything around it indiscriminately |
Both names have appeared in pre-release gameplay footage and official announcements, so they are verifiable examples of witchcraft.
5. Where Spells Come From#
| Source | Trait |
|---|---|
| Ancient Circles | 13 across the map, daytime only, reliably produce witchcraft manuals |
| Witchcraft merchants | Can be bought from during certain hours |
| Camp chests | Looted from soldier and bandit camps |
| Enemy drops | Highly random |
Ancient Circles are the most reliable route of the lot: use Focus Mode to inspect the altar in front of the mural, summon the enemies, clear them and open the chest, which also grants experience.
6. The Two-Layer Structure of Manuals and Skill Points#
This is the design that players trip over most easily.
| Step | What to do | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the skill manual in your inventory | The matching node lights up on the skill tree |
| 2 | Spend skill points at a shrine | The witchcraft spell is officially learned |
| Skipping step 1 | The manual just sits there | No amount of clicking on the skill tree does anything |
Crafting recipes do not follow this rule: reading one unlocks it immediately, with no skill point cost.
7. How to Decide Between Marks and Skill Points#
| Situation | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Daytime combat is heavy pressure | Prioritize the offensive category |
| You cannot win but do not want to lower the difficulty | Prioritize the defensive category |
| You like clearing the map thoroughly | Prioritize the recon category |
| You have not settled on a build | Park your skill points in swordsmanship first |
8. The Natural Limits of Witchcraft#
| Limit | Response |
|---|---|
| Completely disabled at night | Switch to vampire abilities after dark |
| Depends on skill points, which cannot be reset | Do not throw points around early on |
| Some damaging spells cost health | There is no feeding to recover by day, so check your health first |
Pay special attention to the third point: the powerful witchcraft in this game often costs part of your health, and by day you cannot feed to win it back.
9. Pairing Witchcraft with the Day/Night Cycle#
| Time of day | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Day | Use recon to locate targets, use offensive spells to suppress groups |
| Before dusk | Finish anything that needs witchcraft |
| Night | Hand the slots over to vampire abilities, do not count on topping up with spells |
10. Common Misconceptions#
| Misconception | Correction |
|---|---|
| Witchcraft is all-purpose | It only works during the day |
| Witchcraft is only damage spells | The official categories also include defense and recon |
| Picking up a manual means you know it | You still have to read it, and still have to spend skill points |
| Skill points can be respecced anytime | They cannot |
Closing Thoughts#
Witchcraft here is closer to “a toolbox exclusive to daylight” than a full magic system: it is strong, but locked by time; it is useful, but only if you use the right category. Put recon to work and the value of this whole section doubles.
