Crafting System#

Crafting System

Strictly speaking, the crafting system in Avowed has only three actions: break down, upgrade, and cook. There is no recipe book to farm and no blueprints to collect. This design keeps the player’s attention on exploration, at the cost of making the crafting side of the game fairly thin.

Three Actions at Camp#

Action Where Output
Break down Any time, from the inventory screen Base materials such as metal, wood, and leather
Upgrade Camp workbench Raises an item’s quality tier
Cooking Camp cooking spot Food that provides lasting buffs

All three actions revolve around camp, so “find the camp first in every new region” is the most practical habit to build in Avowed.

Breakdown Rules#

Item broken down Main output
Melee weapons Metal chunks of the matching tier
Bows, wands, grimoires, shields Wooden branches of the matching tier
Armor Hides of the matching tier
Unique equipment Rare Adra-series materials

Breaking items down does not refund coin, but the materials are usually worth more than the selling price. The safest habit early on is this: break down anything you are not planning to upgrade.

Cooking#

Camp lets you cook food, and food provides status buffs that last for a while rather than instant recovery. The game includes an achievement for cooking every recipe at camp, so cooking is not an optional decorative system.

Food type Buff direction
Main dishes Raises health or stamina caps
Soups and stews Provides ongoing recovery
Drinks Raises attributes or resistances
Special ingredient dishes Boosts aimed at specific situations

Recipes unlock gradually through exploration and purchases, and most ingredients come from gathering in the wild and from merchants.

Gathering Materials#

Material category Main sources
Herbs Wild gathering nodes, chests, merchants
Wood and metal Chests, weapon merchants, breaking items down
Leather Chests, armor merchants, breaking items down
Adra series Breaking down unique equipment, specific chests
Enchanting materials Dropped by specific enemies

The compass shows a generic marker for gathering nodes, so pick things up whenever you see them and you will not run short of base materials later.

Gathering Habits That Pay Off#

Habit Effect
Walk along road edges in every new region Gathering nodes and chests cluster beside paths
Mark large enemies when you see them Enchanting materials come from specific enemies and you will farm them later
Do not sell common equipment Breaking items down pays better over time
Clear the map behind you when stuck at a tier The previous region usually still has unopened chests

Where It Meets the Upgrade System#

Crafting and upgrading are two links on the same chain. Breaking down produces materials, materials are spent on workbench upgrades, cross-tier upgrades consume Adra materials, and Adra materials come from breaking down unique equipment. Understand that chain and you will never end up with piles of coin but gear that cannot move up.

Symptom Cause Fix
Lots of coin but no materials You sold gear instead of breaking it down Break everything down from now on
Not enough Adra materials You upgraded too many unique items at once Concentrate on one or two pieces
Missing one enchanting material That material only drops from a specific enemy Go back to the matching region and farm it
Food buffs feel weak Buff duration is short and stacking is limited Treat food as an emergency tool, not a permanent one

The Practical Value of Cooking#

Food can be ignored entirely on Normal, but on Hard and on the Path of the Damned, eating the right dish before a boss fight is extremely cost-effective preparation. That goes especially for the types that grant resistances or raise your caps.

The Full Chain from Materials to Combat Power#

Once you understand this chain, you can see why crafting in Avowed is really a resource loop problem rather than a recipe problem.

Link Input Output Key point
Exploration Time Equipment and chest materials Gathering on the way costs the least
Break down Low-tier equipment Base materials Do not sell, break down
Workbench upgrade Base materials plus coin Higher equipment tier Keep your tier in step with the region
Cross-tier upgrade Adra-series materials Large jump in equipment tier Adra only comes from unique gear or chests
Enchanting table Rare enemy materials Exclusive bonuses on unique equipment A one-time choice between two options
Cooking Wild ingredients Lasting buffs Best used right before a boss fight

The only non-renewable resource in this chain is Adra-series material, so it should go to your main weapon first.

Gathering Versus Buying#

Route Best for
Wild gathering Herbs and cooking ingredients
Opening chests Low and mid tiers of metal, wood, and leather
Breaking down Every base material line
Buying from merchants Filling gaps, plus items such as totem clues
Enemy drops Rare materials used only for enchanting

When you are missing one or two materials, buying them outright is the least hassle; when you are missing a whole tier, break items down instead.

Related system Interaction
Scavenging passives in the skill trees Directly raise material income and lower upgrade costs
Exploration rewards Leftover chests in the previous region are often the cure when you are stuck at a tier
Companion training Grants permanent attribute bonuses; unrelated to materials but the same kind of long-term investment
Totem collection Grants passives at camp once complete, some of which strengthen companions and recovery
