Mode Walkthrough Essentials#
Team Fortress 2 has no single-player campaign; “walkthrough” here means how to push each PvP mode: win conditions, offense/defense keys, and team roles.
Win Conditions by Mode#
| Mode | Win condition | Time limit |
|---|---|---|
| Payload | Blue pushes the bomb cart to the end / Red stops it | Yes (checkpoints extend time) |
| Control points (5CP etc.) | Capture all points, or hold more when time expires | Yes |
| Attack/Defend (A/D) | Blue captures all points within time | Yes (checkpoints extend time) |
| Capture the Flag (CTF) | Steal the enemy intel and return it to your base | Yes |
| King of the Hill (KOTH) | Hold the central point and run out its timer | Yes |
| Competitive | Per competitive map rules (mostly control points) | Yes |
| Mann vs Machine | Survive all robot waves | Co-op, no opposing team |
Note: exact timer values differ per map — defer to the in-game countdown; this site lists no unsourced timings.
Payload Guide#
Blue pushes the bomb cart along the track while Red intercepts; checkpoints extend Blue’s time.
-
Keep people on and beside the cart — the cart itself is mobile cover
-
Pre-clear Sentries and sticky traps at key intersections (chokes, high-ground edges)
-
Save the Medic’s Über for the nastiest stretch, not for whatever comes first
-
Red shouldn’t all camp the final checkpoint — bleeding Blue’s clock mid-route is more effective
Control Points Guide#
Both teams fight over map points; capture all of them, or hold more when time runs out.
| Stage | Attacking strategy | Defending strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Rush the nearest point | Contest the central point |
| Mid | Focus the weakest point | Consolidate held points |
| Late | All-in on the last point | Fortress the last point |
-
The Scout’s team-leading 133% speed makes him the capping mainstay
-
Control of high ground and chokes often decides the whole match
-
On 5CP maps, the comeback window is “the last point” — the longer defenders bunker down, the smaller the window
Attack/Defend Guide#
One side attacks the points, the other defends; attackers must push layer by layer within the time.
-
Attackers organize Über pushes, pairing Rocket Jumps and Sticky Jumps for aerial pressure to tear the line open
-
Defenders anchor on Sentries and terrain, keeping one flank rotation route open
-
Each broken stage pushes defenders back one layer; attackers shouldn’t linger — run for the next checkpoint
King of the Hill#
| Key | Notes |
|---|---|
| Point location | One central control point for the whole map |
| Defense | After capping, ring the high ground with Sentries and firing lines |
| Offense | Attack from multiple directions to split the defense |
| Rhythm | In matches where the point flips often, what matters is “hold it until the timer runs out,” not “the moment you cap” |
Capture the Flag Keys#
-
Intel (the flag) sits at the center of each base; carry it back to your own intel room to score
-
A killed carrier drops the intel, which auto-returns after a while if untouched — clear stakes for both escorts and interceptors
-
The Engineer’s Sentry is the core of flag defense; Spies and Demomen handle dismantling lines
Mann vs Machine Guide#
Six players co-op against AI robot waves, defending Mann Co.’s Australium reserves.
| Stage | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|
| Early waves | Bank cash and plan upgrade routes |
| Mid waves | Upgrade anti-armor and penetration deliberately |
| Hard waves | Focus fire tanks and giants; keep the Medic charging |
-
The upgrade shop between waves: spend in-match cash on damage boosts, crit chance, max health, and more
-
Heavies should invest in minigun penetration and damage; Medics in charge rate and healing efficiency
-
Clear strategies for high-difficulty missions and tours are in Endgame Content
Competitive Keys#
Competitive is 6v6 ranked; entry requires a premium account, a qualifying Steam phone number, and casual level 3 (unrelated to playtime).
-
The community-standard lineup: 2 Scouts + 2 Soldiers + 1 Demoman + 1 Medic
-
The opening rollout is the opening duel of every round
-
The Medic’s Über cadence is the starting gun of every fight — the whole team organizes around it
-
Highlander 9v9 suits players who know every matchup; see Endgame Content
Using Map Resources#
| Resource | Where they appear | Usage keys |
|---|---|---|
| Health packs | Fixed spawn points in each area | Plan retreat routes to them at low HP |
| Ammo packs | Near points and corridors | Top off on the way, and leave some for teammates |
| Large supplies | Key positions | Contested zones — build defense lines around them |
Respawn timers for health/ammo packs vary by map — defer to the official wiki’s map pages and the game itself.
Universal Opening Checklist#
-
Learn each map’s respawn and resource points
-
Use elevation for tactical advantage
-
Watch team composition — nine Snipers win no control points
-
Everyone pushes mid at the start; rotate by point status in the mid-game
Mode Quick Reference#
| Mode | Special technique |
|---|---|
| Payload | Use the cart as cover |
| Control points | Manage cap timers and time extensions |
| CTF | Plan the intel escort route |
| KOTH | Central-point offense/defense rotation is the core |
| Competitive | Team comms and Über games decide it |
| MvM | Cash distribution and upgrade routes decide the win |
