Ainigmata Ostraka: Riddles and Exclusive Engravings#
The Ainigmata Ostraka scattered across Greece are this game’s signature collection puzzle: a potsherd inscribed with a riddle in verse, usually hidden in a point of interest such as ruins, a cave, a shipwreck, a fortress or a leader’s mansion. Every ostraka is a two-step process — pick up the shard at point A and read the riddle, then follow the directions, landmarks and object clues in the verse to point B, find the object you can examine (a statue, bones, an offering, shipwreck debris and so on) and interact with it to solve the riddle and claim the exclusive engraving. These engravings cannot be obtained through challenges or shops; they are rewards unique to ostraka.
Counting conventions: the starter island of Kephallonia has a fixed set of 3, located at Markos’s vineyard, the Melissani cave and Ithaka; the rest of mainland Greece holds dozens more, with the complete list in mainstream guides running to about 40. Whether anything was added beyond Greece depends on the expansion and version; some later content comes as quest-form treasure riddles, so the final total follows the in-game collectibles counter.
Ostraka List Grouped by Engraving Type#
Ostraka engravings work as series: the effect of a given series rises step by step as you solve more shards of the same series, up to a maximum of five tiers. The table below lists verified shards and starting values by series (parentheses give the puzzle’s English name and where the shard sits):
| Engraving series |

Tip The starting values in the table are the tier granted when you solve the first ostraka of that series; the progression for the first four series has been cross-checked against multiple sources, while the maximum tiers of the others follow what the blacksmith interface shows in game. A few individual shards show slight discrepancies between guides, and those follow the in-game values as well.
Field Notes on the Three Kephallonia Ostraka#
The three ostraka on the starter island are the tutorial for the whole system. Their verses and solutions are as follows:
| Ostraka |
Where the riddle is found |
Solution location and target object |
Engraving |
| Ashes to Ashes |
Second-floor balcony of the barn east of Markos’s vineyard |
The burnt temple north of Kausos village in the southwest of the island; examine the smoldering pile of junk |
Adrenaline per hit +3% |
| Bottomless Lake |
Bottom of the pool in the Melissani cave; diving required |
Underwater rock ledge at Bottomless Lake on the Koliadai coast; examine the marble statue of a woman |
Critical damage while at full health +10% |
| Fatal Attraction |
Rooftop of the tallest building north of the Palace of Odysseus ruins on Ithaka |
Beside the building right of the entrance to Eumaios’s pig farm north of the palace; examine the slaughtered goat |
Swords and daggers damage +2% |
The three belong to three different series, so from the start they cover three commonly used attributes — critical damage, critical chance and ability resources. Finish all of them before leaving Kephallonia.
Unlocking Mechanics and Applying Them at the Blacksmith#
| Step |
Action |
Key point |
| Pick up the shard |
Search points of interest for the glowing potsherd |
Scan the area with Ikaros first; collection spots are marked with a question mark |
| Study the riddle |
Open the shard in your inventory and read the verse |
The clues only give directions, landmarks and a description of the object, never a circle on the map |
| Travel to the solution point |
Follow the verse to the landmark at point B |
Most lie in the same region as the shard or nearby, and may require diving and climbing |
| Examine the evidence |
Get close to the target object and press the interact button |
Interacting successfully counts as solving the riddle and the engraving enters your inventory at once |
| Engrave at the blacksmith |
Talk to any blacksmith and open the engraving tab |
Pay Drachmae to engrave it into a slot on your gear |
On the blacksmith side there are three hard rules: each piece of gear has only one engraving slot; an engraving already applied cannot be removed to empty the slot, but it can be overwritten by another engraving (also for a fee); ostraka engravings are the only source of their effects, so reaching a higher tier means solving more shards of the same series.
Keep two kinds of “stele” apart: the ancient stelae deep inside tombs grant ability points when interacted with and belong to tomb collection; the riddle ostraka in this section grant engravings. The two are unrelated.
