Engraving System#
How to Get Engravings#
Engravings are applied to gear at a blacksmith for Drachmae, and they are the single best return on investment for character growth in Odyssey. All engravings in the game come from four sources:
| Source |
Details |
| Ostraka |
Puzzle ostraka scattered across the map; solving a riddle grants series engravings whose tier rises with the number of shards solved |
| Challenge unlocks |
Completing combat challenges such as killing captains or polemarchs unlocks the matching engravings |
| Level-ups |
Some basic engravings unlock gradually as your character level rises |
| Hephaistos’s Workshop |
Buys special engravings and upgrades existing ones to higher tiers; see below |
Common Engraving Types#
| Type |
Representative engravings |
Details |
| Class damage |
Warrior damage, Hunter damage, Assassin damage |
Boosts melee, ranged and assassination damage respectively |
| Critical |
Critical hit chance, Critical damage |
Comes in unconditional and full-health / low-health conditional versions |
| Elemental |
Fire damage, Poison damage, Burning and Poison duration, Elemental resistance |
Core of elemental builds; the duration and resistance series come from ostraka riddles |
| Defense |
Armor, Health, Ranged resistance |
Improves survivability; a priority when starting on higher difficulties |
| Mechanic |
Overpower Attack damage, Adrenaline per hit |
Affects burst from Overpower Attacks and the ability rotation |
Ostraka Series Engravings#
Ostraka rewards are not a single isolated engraving but a set of series engravings: one series is spread across multiple ostraka, and each shard you solve raises that series by one tier until it is maxed out. The tier progression and representative shards of the common series are listed below (exact values follow the in-game engraving description):
| Engraving series |
Tier progression |
Representative shard (region) |
| Critical damage while at full health |
+10% → +50%, 5 tiers total |
Bottomless Lake · Kephallonia |
| Critical damage while at low health |
+10% → +50%, 5 tiers total |
Heart and Sole · Malis |
| Critical chance while at full health |
+2% → +10%, 5 tiers total |
Hound Docked · Megaris |
| Critical chance while at low health |
+2% → +10%, 5 tiers total |
A Deal for Freedom · Euboea |
| Heavy weapons damage |
+2% → +10%, 5 tiers total |
Finger Tip · Phokis |
| Spears and staffs damage |
+2% → +10%, 5 tiers total |
Record Sunshine · Megaris |
| Swords and daggers damage |
+2% → +10%, 5 tiers total |
Fatal Attraction · Kephallonia |
| Overpower Attack damage |
+4% → +20%, 5 tiers total |
Red Scent · Lokris |
| Adrenaline per hit |
+3% → +15%, 5 tiers total |
Ashes to Ashes · Kephallonia |
| Burning duration |
+1 second → +5 seconds, 5 tiers total |
Happy Hour · Megaris |
| Poison duration |
+1 second → +5 seconds, 5 tiers total |
A Specific General · Phokis |
| Elemental resistance |
+2% → +10%, 5 tiers total |
Pressed for Time · Phokis |
Collection advice: the three starting regions of Kephallonia, Megaris and Phokis already hold the first-tier shards of the critical damage, critical chance and Adrenaline series, so solving them on the way through early on gives your main weapon its first real power spike. The ostraka themselves can be collected at any time, but the treasure pointed to by a riddle may sit inside a high-level enemy zone, so gauge your own strength first.
Hephaistos’s Workshop#
Hephaistos’s Workshop sits inside Myson Cave in the Malis region, and it is the only blacksmith spot on the whole map that both sells special engravings and upgrades engraving tiers directly.
| Function |
Details |
| Buying engravings |
Sells special engravings that ordinary blacksmiths do not stock, purchased with Drachmae |
| Upgrading engravings |
Unlocked engravings can be raised in tier here, up to tier 6-7 (following the tiers actually available in game) |
| Cost |
Both buying and upgrading cost Drachmae, and the price rises with each tier |
This cave is effectively the engraving terminal: ordinary blacksmiths only apply basic engravings, so if you want ostraka series or critical engravings maxed out, you always end up coming back here. Upgrade costs are steep, so save up enough Drachmae and do it in one go, maxing the core engravings of your current loadout rather than running back and forth repeatedly.
Best Engraving Build Ideas#
Engraving returns scale with tier and gear quality, so the following is directional advice only; actual numbers follow the blacksmith interface panel in game:
| Build |
Build idea |
Who it suits |
| Critical |
First complete the four ostraka series for crit chance and crit damage at full and low health, then stack the basic critical engravings; the full-health version suits steady output, while the low-health version pairs with low-health tactics for a higher ceiling |
Warriors and Hunters alike |
| Fire |
Extend the fire damage window with the Burning duration series, take the fire weapon enchantment, and add one piece of elemental resistance against enemy fire attacks |
Players who like sustained attrition |
| Assassination |
Keep the ability rotation running with the Adrenaline per hit series and finish bursts with Overpower Attack damage; night actions grant an extra Assassin damage bonus |
Stealth players |
Three things to remember when building: ostraka series engravings come from solving riddles, so there is no need to grind for money deliberately; engraving slots on a single piece of gear are limited, so rather than stacking identical bonuses, build around one core mechanic; check the available upgrade tiers at Hephaistos’s Workshop before re-gearing, because in most cases raising an engraving by one tier is better value than swapping gear.

Crafting Efficiency Summary#
| Advice |

| Do not over-upgrade low-level gear |
Low-level gear is replaced quickly |
| Dismantle blue and purple gear |

| Prioritize upgrading Legendary gear |
Legendary gear is worth a long-term investment |
| Engravings matter more than upgrades |
Engraving bonuses far outweigh upgrades |
| Use blacksmith markers |
Mark blacksmiths on the map to upgrade at any time |
| Rework engravings when resetting skills |
Adjust engravings and skill setups together |
Tip The engraving system is the most effective way to raise combat power. Even an ordinary purple weapon can rival a Legendary weapon with the right engravings. Ostraka series engravings and Hephaistos’s Workshop are the two main lines of the engraving system: clear ostraka early, upgrade tiers later, and your power curve becomes much smoother.
