Weapons & Parts#

1. The Weapon System at a Glance#

Ace Combat 8’s firepower is built on three layers: the gun, standard missiles, and Special Weapons (SP Weapons). Understanding each layer’s role is the prerequisite for assembling effective firepower.

Weapon Layer Representative Role Ammo
Gun 20mm/30mm cannon High close-range hit rate; cheap secondary weapon Ample ammo
Standard missiles Air-to-air/air-to-ground standard missiles Mid-range main damage Limited ammo
Special weapons Long-range/multi/heavy munitions The key that decides the battle Very scarce ammo

2. The Gun#

The gun is the game’s “all-purpose secondary weapon” — weaker than missiles, but it wins on ample ammo, no lock-on requirement, and extremely high close-range accuracy.

Gun Type Rate of Fire Damage Best Use
20mm cannon High Medium General dogfighting
30mm cannon Low High Heavy airframes

The gun is at its best when you’re latched onto an enemy’s tail in a dogfight, and it is also the last resort once missiles run dry. Veterans in a dogfight often lead with the gun and support with missiles, because the gun isn’t bound by the lock ring and keeps dealing damage.

3. Standard Missiles#

Standard missiles are your main damage dealers, in two types:

Missile Type Role Strengths Weaknesses
Standard AAM General air-to-air Versatile and balanced No obvious weakness
Ground Attack Missile Ground strikes Highly effective vs ground Useless vs aircraft

4. Special Weapons (SP Weapons)#

Special weapons decide battles, and they come in many varieties. The common types in this game:

SP Weapon Target Traits
Long-Range AAM Air Extreme range; seizes the initiative first
Multi-lock AAM Air (multiple targets) Locks and launches at several aircraft at once
Ground Cruise Missile Ground Wide-area ground devastation
Guided Bomb Ground Massive single-shot ground damage
EMP All-around Paralyzes enemy electronics in range
Rocket Pods Ground High count, wide coverage

5. The Parts System#

Aircraft in this game can equip a variety of parts to strengthen the airframe, carrying on the series tradition. Parts usually fall into these broad categories:

Part Type Upgrade Direction Examples
Missile parts Missile damage and lock-on speed Missile Power+, Lock-On Speed+
Gun parts Gun rate of fire and accuracy Gun Fire Rate+, Dispersion-
Mobility parts Turning and stall resistance Turn Rate+, Stall Speed-
Defense parts Armor and damage resistance Damage Resistance+
Special weapon parts Enhances SP Weapons SP Ammo+, SP Power+

6. Parts Slots and Loadout Ideas#

Aircraft have several parts slots, but slots are limited and demand trade-offs. Here are the mainstream loadout plans:

Plan Best For Idea
Pure air-to-air Air superiority missions Missile Power + Missile Lock-On + Turn Rate
Pure ground strike Ground missions Ground weapon boost + SP Ammo + Damage Resistance
Balanced Mixed missions Gun Accuracy + Missile Lock-On + Damage Resistance
Veteran dogfighter Ace/online Gun Fire Rate + Mobility + Special Weapons

7. Special Weapon Ammo#

Special weapon ammo is extremely limited — always use it sparingly, saving precious SP rounds for high-value targets (ace aircraft, large weapons, dense target clusters); ordinary missiles and the gun handle everything else.

8. Matching Weapons to Airframes#

  • Air-superiority airframes (F-22A, Su-57) should focus on air-to-air specials and missile parts.
  • Ground-attack airframes (F-15E, F-35C) should focus on ground specials and air-to-ground parts.
  • All-round airframes (X-02S, Rafale) can switch flexibly by mission.

Read the principles of matching airframes to weapons together with the Aircraft Catalog and Aircraft Tuning & Customization.

9. Switching Weapons in Combat#

In a hot fight, fast weapon switching is one of the core skills. Bind the switch key where your hand falls naturally and build the rhythm of “gun up close, missiles at mid-range, specials for key targets.”

  • On a tail: Sustained output with the gun.
  • Mid-range engagement: Lock with a standard missile, then fire.
  • Facing a formation: Multi-lock missiles to tag several aircraft in one pass.
  • Facing heavy hardware: A ground special or heavy munition to break it in one blow.

10. Summary#

Weapon choice and parts pairing are what turn Ace Combat 8 from “flying a plane” into “playing tactics.” Allocate ammo wisely, adjust your loadout per mission, and save your best munitions for key targets — that is the surest path to high ranks and conquering Ace difficulty.
