The Interface Explained#
On-Screen Elements#
VALORANT’s HUD is clean and efficient — the key information is always in the same place. The main elements:
| Element | Position | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Health | Bottom center | Current HP (100 max) |
| Armor | Bottom center | Armor value (light 50 / heavy 100) |
| Ammo | Bottom right | Current magazine / reserve |
| Ability bar | Bottom left | Four ability icons with charges |
| Minimap | Top left | Teammate positions and known enemies |
| Round timer | Top center | Time left in the round |
| Score | Top center | Attacker vs defender rounds |
| Economy | Buy phase | Current creds |
| Ultimate charge | Bottom center | Ult charge percentage |
Minimap Tips#
The minimap is one of your most important information sources. It shows teammate positions, spotted enemies, and teammates’ vision cones. Build the habit of checking it constantly and you will read the round before it reaches you.
Match Flow#
Pre-Match#
Before each match, the game randomly assigns your team to start on attack or defense. The preparation phase gives 30 seconds to talk strategy.
Round Structure#
| Phase | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Buy phase | 30 seconds | Buy weapons and abilities |
| Round start | After countdown | Barriers drop, movement opens |
| Combat phase | 1:40 | The main fighting window |
| Round end | After a kill / defuse | Slow-motion replay |
| Round gap | 7 seconds | Reset for the next round |
Defender Objectives#
Defenders can stop the spike from being planted, defuse it after planting, or eliminate the attacking team. Defusing a planted spike takes 7 seconds and can be interrupted halfway.
Agent Roles#
Duelists#
Duelists are the team’s spearhead: self-buffing kits built to win duels and open sites. They are the tip of the spear against a held line.
| Agent | Origin | Kit identity |
|---|---|---|
| Jett | South Korea | High mobility, dash and float |
| Phoenix | UK | Fire abilities, self-healing |
| Reyna | Mexico | Kill-stacking buffs |
| Raze | Brazil | Explosive damage, bot |
| Yoru | Japan | Teleport and deception |
| Iso | China | Duel arena and shield |
| Neon | Philippines | Ultra-fast movement and lightning |
Controllers#
Controllers carve up the map and block vision, creating advantages on attack or defense. Their smokes and slows are the backbone of structured play.
| Agent | Origin | Kit identity |
|---|---|---|
| Brimstone | USA | Orbital strikes, precise smokes |
| Viper | USA | Toxic walls and poison clouds |
| Omen | Unknown | Shadow teleports and blinds |
| Astra | Ghana | Star placement and zone control |
| Harbor | India | Water walls and shields |
| Clove | Scotland | Smoke and resurrection |
Initiators#
Initiators scout and disrupt, feeding the team information and opening windows for pushes. They excel at revealing enemy positions.
| Agent | Origin | Kit identity |
|---|---|---|
| Sova | Russia | Recon bolts and drone |
| Breach | Sweden | Quakes and flashes |
| Skye | Australia | Healing and seekers |
| KAY/O | Switzerland | Pulse grenades and suppression |
| Fade | Turkey | Terror and Prowlers |
| Gekko | USA | Controllable creatures |
Sentinels#
Sentinels lock down ground and anchor defense — healing, shields, or control over key chokepoints. They are the backbone of held sites.
| Agent | Origin | Kit identity |
|---|---|---|
| Sage | China | Healing, wall, and resurrection |
| Cypher | Morocco | Cameras and tripwires |
| Killjoy | Germany | Turret and nanoswarm |
| Chamber | France | Precision guns and teleport |
| Deadlock | Norway | Gravnet traps and barriers |
| Vyse | Nigeria | Metal walls and thorn zones |
Recommended Starter Agents#
Why These Agents#
Buying Guide#
Weapon Categories#
| Category | Price range | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Sidearms | 200-600 | Eco-round backups |
| SMGs | 1100-1600 | Half-buy transitions |
| Shotguns | 850-1800 | Close-quarters fights |
| Rifles | 2050-2900 | Full-buy mains |
| Snipers | 1100-4700 | Long-range precision |
| Heavy weapons | 1600-3800 | Special tactical roles |
Armor Advice#
| Armor | Price | Provides |
|---|---|---|
| None | 0 | No protection |
| Light | 400 | +25 effective HP |
| Heavy | 1000 | +50 effective HP |
Armor is one of the most important purchases in the game. Even on a tight economy, light armor meaningfully raises your survivability. Remember: armor does not slowly regenerate after taking damage — every purchase is a fresh state.
Intermediate Fundamentals#
Shooting Technique#
-
Stop-and-shoot: release movement keys, pause for an instant, then fire — accuracy jumps. This is essential in VALORANT.
-
Head-level crosshair: keep your crosshair at enemy head height to cut adjustment time. On most maps, head height aligns with the top of the doorframe.
-
Short bursts: at range, fire 2-3 round bursts instead of full auto to avoid bloom.
-
Use cover: never stand in front of two angles at once. Peel fights one enemy at a time.
Economy Basics#
-
Full-buy round: team funds ≥ 3900 — buy a rifle, heavy armor, and abilities.
-
Half-buy round: funds 2000-3900 — consider an SMG or light armor.
-
Eco round: funds under 2000 — pistols only, save for the next round.
-
Team economy: watch teammates’ funds; drop them a gun when needed.
Team Communication#
-
Use the map’s standard callout names when reporting positions.
-
Call out plant and defuse timing immediately.
-
Tell the team when your ultimate is ready.
-
Keep calling positions even after death — death location is information.
-
Stay positive; do not flame teammates.
Common Mistakes#
| Mistake | Consequence | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Shooting while moving | Wildly inaccurate bullets | Practice stop-and-shoot |
| Never checking the minimap | Flanked repeatedly | Glance at the minimap every 5 seconds |
| Lone-wolf plays | Zero coordination | Always move with teammates |
| Chaotic economy | Worse guns than the enemy | Follow the team’s economy plan |
| Ignoring abilities | Wasting your agent | Learn and use your kit deliberately |
| Not trading kills | Man disadvantage | Trade teammates’ deaths immediately |
FAQ#
Stick to one sensitivity setting and practice deliberately. Warm up in The Range or use third-party tools like Aim Lab. Consistency matters more than the exact number.
Plant when the site is actually secure, covering the plant with a smoke or flash. Never force a plant into an obviously held site. In a 1v1, fake plants can bait the defender out.
When flashed, back into cover or a safe angle and wait it out. Do not spray blindly or sprint — both just expose you. Build the habit of turning away from likely flash angles.
