Beginner’s Guide#
Before You Start#
Escape from Tarkov is widely known as the shooter with the highest entry barrier — but once you grasp its core logic, it’s also the most rewarding. The most important thing in the early game is dropping the “this is a battle royale” instinct: your goal isn’t to survive to the end, it’s to extract with your loot. This page is for first-time players, walking from account setup through your first raid.

Raid Fundamentals#
Movement and Stealth#
- Walking quietly is stealthier than sprinting — quieter footsteps
- Move cover-to-cover, point to point
- Never walk blindly toward gunfire — observe first, then decide
- High ground and vantage points give vision advantages

Combat Principles#
- First contact is a huge advantage — whoever spots the other first usually wins
- Don’t trade shots standing still; use cover and positioning
- Body shots lose to headshots — build the habit
- In a losing fight, extract rather than push greedily
Every map has multiple extraction points; some require conditions (payment, signals, no gear). The extract is the endpoint of every raid — and the most dangerous moment.
| Extract type |
Condition |
Notes |
| Free extracts |
None |
Standard extraction |
| Paid extracts |
Money required |
Bring enough rubles |
| Signal extracts |
Signal device required |
Trigger the signal, then extract |
| No-gear extracts |
Must be empty-handed |
Drop weapons and backpack |
- Extracts are common ambush spots — observe before approaching
- Don’t linger at the extract; get out fast
- In teams, cover each other’s extraction order
- Stay alert through the extraction countdown

FAQ, Continued#
| Question |
Answer |
| What should my first raid be? |
Basic gear, learn the flow, extract alive |
| Should I mourn lost gear? |
Don’t run good gear — less to mourn |
| When do I switch to good gear? |
Once you know the game and your economy is stable |
| Should beginners join a wipe season? |
Learn the main servers first, then try a season |
Editor’s Note#
The beginner phase is the most brutal and the most precious. My advice: don’t rush to buy good gear — learn the maps on Scav, drill recoil in the range, then work through the task chain step by step on PMC. Tarkov’s charm is the sense of growth: when you evolve from “run at the sight of anyone” to “setting ambushes on purpose”, the game truly starts being fun. The Kord Breach season gives you a zero-cost trial ground — go for it boldly.
