Beginner Onboarding#
If this is your first fighting game, work through the steps below in order so the bending-combo complexity does not scare you off on day one. Every character has a basic tutorial; drill the feel of your buttons and the chi-gauge mechanics before jumping into ranked, and your win rate will visibly improve.
Step 1: Lock In the Basic Controls#
Before you play seriously, register every button in training mode. It offers frame data, input display, and AI behavior settings — ideal for checking whether your inputs actually came out. Aim to perform the following without thinking; they are the foundation of every later combo:
| Action | Default input | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Light attack | Square | Quick poke that links into short strings |
| Heavy attack | Triangle | Breaks recovery, ideal for punishes |
| Kick | X / Circle | Creates space or hits low |
| Light bending | Dedicated bending input | Chips the opponent’s chi gauge |
| Heavy bending | Dedicated bending input | Big damage, long recovery |
| Throw | Light + Heavy | Breaks guard and drives wake-up pressure |
| Awakened mode | Two buttons at once | Bursts into the Awakened state |
| Dash | Forward, forward | Pressure and a common combo starter |
Step 2: Who to Start With#
Start with Toph or Korra. Both have readable moves and generous mistake margins. Toph’s low earth bending covers a wide area and forces opponents to defend; Korra can switch between four elements, so her offense starts flexibly and helps you feel out the element matchup system first-hand. Once you can perform both characters’ full move lists on command, try pressure-rhythm characters like Zuko or Azula.
Step 3: What the Tutorial Teaches#
The tutorial walks you through the three core mechanics one at a time — finish every item before going live:
- Bending basics: learn how bending attacks spend the opponent’s chi gauge, and get a feel for each element’s reach and hit properties.
- Chi Seal: the game’s most distinctive mechanic. Catch the opponent at the moment they are spending chi and cut off their bending, leaving them unable to use it at all.
- Awakened mode: once the chi gauge fills, Awakened sharply raises attack power and strengthens both bending potency and throw startup. After awakening, decide quickly — press the advantage and end the round, or bank the gauge for a key moment.
Step 4: A Sensible Tutorial Order#
Clear every guided tutorial stage first, then move into free training. Suggested order: learn your buttons, practice light-attack string starters, land a mid-range bending hit, learn throw-based counter-pressure, practice Awakened bursts, and finally run the timed challenge stages to drill confirm combos against the clock.
Core Combat Mechanics#
Chi Gauge Management#
The chi gauge is the pivot of every offense-defense transition: a charged gauge funds bending amplification and Awakened mode, while the same resource also covers defensive options. The most common beginner mistake is popping Awakened the instant the gauge fills, only to eat a full punish on wake-up. Manage it by three rules:
- When you hold offensive momentum, save the gauge and trigger Awakened after a heavy hit connects for maximum damage.
- When the opponent is spending chi heavily, prioritize a Chi Seal to interrupt their offense.
- When you are behind on health, spend chi on low bends and defensive options to keep your deterrence, rather than forcing an Awakened comeback.
When to Trigger Awakened Mode#
Awakened mode is not a mindless damage boost — it is a window that can flip a round:
- Awaken while the opponent has no chi: they cannot counter with their own meter, so the burst pays off the most.
- Awaken in close quarters: the buffed, faster startups force the opponent into guess situations.
- Save it to finish the round: treat Awakened as a closer, and do not gamble it while you are low on health.
Defense and Punishes#
Learning to defend widens the skill gap faster than learning combos. When you are stuck in a string, use your defensive option; with gauge to spare, prioritize your guard tools; and deliberately leaving gaps in your own pressure is a mind game that shows up constantly in high-level play. The payoff side matters just as much: catch a heavy move’s long recovery with a full punish, and a single successful read can decide the whole match.
Advanced Strategy and Mind Games#
Fight at Your Character’s Range#
Different characters want completely different spacing plans. Rushdown characters should fight to stay in the opponent’s face; control characters want to stretch the range and grind them down. Adjusting your rhythm to the matchup’s element relationships before the match starts is the single most valuable preparation you can make.
Track the Opponent’s Resources#
Always know whether the opponent’s chi gauge is full, whether they meet the conditions to Awaken, and whether they still hold defensive resources. Getting baited into an Awakened activation and punished for free afterward is a morale crusher — the same is true for your opponent, which is exactly why resource denial works.
Pressure Strings That Hold Up#
Stringing light attacks into a mid, then mixing in heavy bending or a throw depending on the situation, is basic but effective pressure. Rehearsing the same string from fixed positions in training mode noticeably stabilizes your hands — consistency, not novelty, wins ranked sets.
