FAQ#
This page only answers questions with reliable sources, verified as of 2026-10-07 (official store page, steamdb.info patch records, and community guide sites). Questions without reliable material are marked “not documented” — no speculation.
1. Release and Pricing#
| Question |
Answer |
| Is it out? |
Yes. Released 2026-07-22 on Steam and Xbox Series X|S, day one on Xbox Game Pass |
| How much? |
$9.99 in the US region; China region list price ¥38 with a 10% launch-week discount to ¥34.2 (per NGA and GCores). At the 2026-10-07 capture the US region had a -10% sale ($8.99, ending October 8) |
| Is there a demo? |
Yes. A free multiplayer demo launched 2025-09-29 (standalone app, App 4050060), rated Overwhelmingly Positive in English reviews (4,856 reviews, 99%) |
| How long is the demo? |
No reliable data. Known to use an early non-randomized version (shift-at-midnight.wiki), unlike the retail game’s randomized shifts |
| Do I pay again for updates? |
No. The major update officially planned for Q4 2026 will be free |
| Will the price go up? |
This is a full release (not Early Access) — no “price increase at 1.0” scenario exists |
| Question |
Answer |
| Which platforms? |
PC (Steam, Windows) and Xbox Series X|S (Optimized, Xbox Play Anywhere); some sources also mention an itch.io version |
| Is it on a subscription? |
Yes. Day one on Xbox Game Pass (Ultimate / PC Game Pass / Console / Cloud) |
| Can platforms play together? |
At launch, Steam and Xbox ecosystems are separated. Full cross-play and a Steam public server browser are on the roadmap with no confirmed date |
| Is there Chinese? |
Yes. 9 languages (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Russian, Portuguese (Brazil)), all with interface + full audio + subtitles |
| Can I play on a handheld? |
The game appears in Steam Deck-related statistics (shiftatmidnight.info), but the official verification level is unverified; the spec bar itself is low (see PC Requirements) |
3. Co-op#
| Question |
Answer |
| How many players? |
Designed and marketed as up to 3-player online co-op. Since the day-one patch of 2026-07-23, lobbies can be set to 6, but the developer notes 4-6 players is “outside the intended design” and not recommended for a first playthrough |
| Built-in voice? |
Yes. Proximity voice chat is an official feature — volume falls off with distance |
| Can I finish it solo? |
Yes. Community guides (dq7reimagined.com) confirm every ending and every achievement is reachable solo |
| Extra requirements for Xbox multiplayer? |
Multiplayer may require an active subscription; the official store page is not explicit — confirm before buying |
| Random matchmaking? |
No reliable data; defer to in-game behavior for how matchmaking works |
4. Gameplay#
| Question |
Answer |
| How long is a run? |
Single-playthrough length: no reliable data; trueachievements.com estimates about 6-8 hours for all 10 achievements |
| How many shifts? |
Story mode has 13 randomized shifts |
| Interrogation rules? |
5 questions per customer (verbatim from the official Simplified Chinese Steam description) |
| How many endings? |
Three — True Ending, Grave Decision, Empty Home — determined by “whether you call Clyde after shift 12” and “whether personal funds reach $250” |
| What if a doppelganger slips through? |
After closing, the night enters the Hunt — a preparation timer lets you set up defenses (exact length unpublished; defer to the game) |
| What if I kill a human? |
You forfeit that sale and its income (gamerblurb.com). Shop rating is a separate system driven by shelves, cleanliness, and service (gamerant.com) |
| What if I kill Sheriff Clyde? |
Far worse: all three ending achievements are voided (shiftatmidnightguide.wiki) — he can never receive the post-shift-12 call |
| How many entities? |
Sources disagree (IGN lists 5 types, dtgre.com 6, some sites say 12) — defer to the game. Verified rule differences in the Entity Compendium |
| Can I keep playing? |
Clearing any ending unlocks Endless Mode, currently in BETA |
5. Achievements and Saves#
| Question |
Answer |
| Achievement count? |
10 Steam achievements (7 visible + 3 hidden ending achievements), 1,000 points total |
| Can one run get all endings? |
No. A run yields one ending — back up saves to branch, or replay; the community warns reloading the shift-12 save is not reliably safe on every platform, so three independent playthroughs are the safest route |
| Cloud saves? |
Yes. Steam Cloud arrived with the 2026-08-21 patch |
| Do demo achievements carry over? |
No. The demo is a standalone app (App 4050060); retail achievements unlock only in the retail version |
6. Update Cadence#
| Question |
Answer |
| What’s been patched? |
Four released patches: 7-23 six-player lobbies + reduced Marionette HP; 7-29 a second pistol + Endless Mode entity Rakes; 8-21 15 new customers + Steam Cloud; 9-1 30 new customers + chainsaw + Endless Mode security cameras + a story-mode patience table |
| What’s coming? |
A free major update officially planned for Q4 2026, adding Endless Mode-exclusive customers, weapons, traps, and monsters |
| When is cross-play? |
On the roadmap with no confirmed date |
7. Questions We Can’t Answer Yet#
Lacking reliable public material, this page does not answer:
- Exact weapon stats and the full balance-change list;
- Per-night quota numbers beyond the verified run from $30 at shift 1 to $80 at shift 13;
- Whether a random matchmaking system exists;
- The complete regional pricing table;
- The exact launch date of the Endless Mode Q4 update.
Once confirmed information lands, this page will update with the version.
8. Glossary#
| Term |
Meaning |
| Doppelganger |
The official Simplified Chinese name for doppelgangers — beings disguised as human customers (an earlier “bionic monster” wording was unsourced and is retired) |
| N.E.T. Database |
The counter computer’s record system, searchable by name for photo, birth date, occupation, and records (an earlier mistranslation is retired) |
| The Hunt |
The post-closing defense phase when entities appear; official wording: “board up doors and windows, set traps, and hide” |
| Blood Moon |
A special night event that guarantees a Hunt — no defense is perfect enough to prevent it |
| Preparation timer |
The window before the Hunt starts for placing traps; exact length unpublished — defer to the game |
| Anomaly Lens |
The Anomaly Lens reveals a customer’s supernatural traits directly; does not work on drivers |
| Emotiscope |
The Emotiscope (also called EmotiScanner), unlocked at shift 6; does work on drivers |
| Personal funds |
Income separate from shop funds; the pet surgery fee and ending checks read only this number |
| Shop funds |
Revenue used to buy weapons, traps, and other operational and defensive supplies |
9. Three Things to Confirm Before Buying#
| Check |
Why It Matters |
| Do you have friends to play with |
Built as co-op (up to 3), though fully completable solo |
| Same platform as your friends |
At launch Steam and Xbox are separated; cross-play has no date |
| Tolerance for randomization |
Random shifts mean different customers and threats every night — memorizing answers won’t help |
10. Advice for Your First Day#
- Use the free demo to learn the verification flow (remember: it’s an early non-randomized version), then decide whether to buy.
- In the retail version, first order of business: read the note, check the inbox, browse the Midnight News board.
- Drill “scan ID → read the N.E.T. file → compare → ask → conclude” into a fixed habit.
- When unsure, let the customer go — killing a real human costs the sale and its income, while a missed doppelganger costs only a winnable defense fight.
- Treat saving as the main quest: endings read only personal funds, and the pet goose’s surgery costs $250.
- No matter how suspicious — never shoot Sheriff Clyde Dawson. All three ending achievements hang on him.
