Core Gameplay Systems#

Survival-Horror Pacing#

Requiem returns to the series’ survival-horror roots and keeps resource tension constant throughout. You cannot mow enemies down with abundant ammo the way later entries allowed — before every engagement you weigh whether this shot is worth taking. Ordinary zombies usually take 4 to 6 pistol rounds to put down, and a single herb restores only a small amount of health. Treating bullets and healing items as finite assets is the real way to play this game. The maps deliberately place skippable routes and narrow turn-back points, encouraging you to study patrol patterns and slip past enemies from the flank rather than trade fire head-on.

Resource Management#

  • Ammo: pistol rounds are the most widespread but limited in power; shotgun shells hit extremely hard yet are in critically short supply, so save them for elite enemies and bosses. Every ammo box is deliberately sized so that in the opening stages you are always a few rounds short of comfortable.
  • Healing items: herbs come in green, red, and blue. Green alone restores only a small amount of health, Green + Green fully restores it, adding red raises the recovery amount, and adding blue adds sustained damage reduction. Mixing timing deserves planning — do not waste combines while at full health.
  • The Lockset box: replaces the traditional inventory as your storage. Locksets are interconnected across regions and are the only way to park ammo, keys, and files you do not need right now. Using their cross-region sharing well cuts backtracking dramatically.

Typewriter Saves#

The game keeps the “typewriter save” system instead of letting you save anywhere. Normal difficulty supplies a limited number of ink ribbons, while Expert supplies none at all, so your save frequency directly sets your margin for error across the whole run. When planning routes, treat typewriter locations as natural chapter nodes: save once before entering unknown areas, save immediately after killing a boss, and keep one inventory slot reserved for ribbons — that is the consensus among experienced players. Dying sends you back to your last save with resources and enemy states fully reset, so a “resource inventory” before every key fight is especially important.

Main Story Overview#

The campaign advances along parallel Grace and Leon S. Kennedy routes across eight chapters, totaling roughly 12 to 15 hours. The first four chapters center on Grace’s investigation of Requiem Manor, gradually exposing the secret underground laboratory beneath it; from chapter five the perspective switches to Leon, the two threads converge in chapter seven, and the story builds toward the truth of the core pathogen — the “Requiem Virus”. Across the run you will shuttle repeatedly between the three large maps: the manor, the underground laboratory, and the outlying village. Learning the shortcut routes between regions shortens travel time significantly. Branch choices affect which rooms you can enter and in what order, as well as which ending you get — play your first run naturally, then plan specific ending routes on a second playthrough.

Puzzle System#

The game’s puzzles fall into three categories: environmental mechanism puzzles, password-lock puzzles, and item-combination puzzles.

  1. Environmental mechanism puzzles: the most common type. Observe the murals, sculptures, and lighting cues in a room to find hidden mechanism handles or movable parts. These puzzles usually have clear visual clues, and reading the files on the wall often hands you the answer directly.
  2. Password-lock puzzles: safes, door terminals, and devices use combination locks. The codes are scattered across letters, memos, and records left beside corpses, and you need to compare them across rooms. When you hit a “four-digit code” puzzle, check the letters near that room first — the answer is almost always hidden there.
  3. Item-combination puzzles: these require using a collected item on a specific object — turning a bearing with a metal key, placing a record on a gramophone, and so on. The item’s description text is the key; reading it once is faster than blind trial and error.

Most puzzles can be solved by inferring from the files around them. A genuine wall almost always means you missed a clue file, not that the puzzle itself is unfair.

Enemies and Bosses#

  • Ordinary zombies: slow but arrive in groups; two headshots with the pistol put one down. Handle them with melee or by slipping past — do not waste shotgun shells on them.
  • Hounds: extremely fast and fond of lunging from outside your view. When you hear barking, raise your gun immediately and wait for the straight-line dash; one hit staggers them, and a follow-up shot finishes the job.
  • Mutants (the Rotskins): evolved from ordinary zombies, with hardened limbs that make them nearly immune to frontal gunfire. Loop behind them, ignite oil barrels, or use environmental explosives for a quick kill — a head-on fight burns a lot of ammo.
  • Boss — the Watcher: the guardian beneath the manor; its weak point is the glowing core on its back. The fight has two phases: focus fire on the core in phase one; in phase two it charges at high speed and summons minions, so clear the adds first and then go back to the boss.
  • Boss — Mother Requiem: the final opponent, deep inside the underground laboratory. Use the four switches at the corners of the arena to break its shield; once the shield falls it staggers briefly, and that is the only safe damage window. It changes its attack pattern after every shield break — keep moving and make good use of the arena’s cover.

Weapons and Items#

The weapon customization system includes 30+ attachments covering suppressors, extended magazines, scopes, and stock modifications. Priorities:

Weapon Role Recommended mods
Pistol Main weapon for the entire run Suppressor + extended magazine
Shotgun Close-range rescue Shortened barrel + firepower boost
SMG Mid-range suppression Scope + stable stock
Sniper rifle Long-range takedowns High-magnification scope + suppressor

Items follow the series’ “combine and use” logic. Beyond herbs there are flashbangs (hard crowd control against hounds and ordinary zombies), molotovs (extremely effective against mutants), and puzzle items (keys, nameplates, records). Every key puzzle item corresponds to a clear purpose, and useless items never occupy handheld inventory slots, so you can explore freely.

Story Background#

The timeline picks up right after the series’ existing mainline, set at Requiem Manor — a mysterious mansion built in the 19th century and watched over for generations by a hereditary family. Local villagers have been disappearing one after another, and an unpublished research institute has been exposed beneath the manor, rumored to be tied to leftover data from the “Raccoon City incident” years ago. Grace infiltrates the manor as an investigative journalist while Leon is ordered to trace the source of the virus leak; the two fight their own battles and ultimately arrive at the same truth. The story centers on the Requiem Virus: it mutates those it infects and also carries a kind of self-repairing awareness, and the manor family’s secret is tightly bound to the virus’s origin. The difference in perspective between the two protagonists lets the same history be read two ways — the biggest draw of this game’s storytelling.

Post-Game Content#

Clearing the game once unlocks New Game+, which carries over all weapons, attachments, and upgrade levels from your save and opens a fresh playthrough at higher difficulty. Beyond that:

  • Expert difficulty: enemy health and aggression rise sharply and ink ribbons are no longer supplied — built for players chasing the ultimate challenge.
  • Infinite ammo unlock: after clearing Expert you can purchase the infinite ammo upgrade, which sharply lowers the barrier for trophy hunting.
  • Speedrun mode: a built-in timer with split records, with your results displayed on a leaderboard.
  • Hidden content: a second playthrough opens secret rooms unreachable in the first, containing hidden weapons and exclusive costumes.

There are roughly 42 achievements in total; “clear with no saves” and “clear Expert without healing items” are the high-difficulty challenges — stage them across NG+ runs using the carry-over advantage.

  • Dead by Daylight — asymmetric multiplayer horror for when you want to be on the other side of the scare
  • Silent Hill 2 Remake — the era’s other landmark psychological horror remake
  • Dead Space — a sci-fi survival horror classic built on the same resource-scarcity tension
  • Control — a supernatural action-adventure with a similarly oppressive, mystery-box story
  • Resident Evil 2 Remake — the modern RE Engine survival horror blueprint this game builds on
