Shift At Midnight Guide#

Shift At Midnight is a co-op detective horror game developed solo by the Australian indie developer Bun Muen and published by the British publisher Kwalee. You work the night shift at a rural American gas station in the 1990s: restocking shelves, receiving deliveries, keeping the place clean, serving customers, and pumping gas — all while vetting every customer who walks through the door, because some customers are not human but doppelgangers. The official description puts it plainly: make sure they are human before letting them leave, or they will come back — and once you slip up, you barricade doors and windows, set traps, and hide.

The game runs on the Unity engine and shipped on July 22, 2026 for Steam and Xbox Series X|S, joining Xbox Game Pass on day one. This hub is built on verifiable public information: numbers and mechanics are limited to what the official store page, official patch notes, and community guide sites confirm. Anything we could not verify is marked as such rather than invented.

What This Guide Covers#

The Chinese hub splits the game into twenty sub-guides, and the fundamentals come first: your first night’s vetting flow, the 13 shifts and their $30-to-$80 quotas, and shop work — restocking, cleaning, pumping gas, and your rating. The identity track follows: doppelganger identification, reading the record discrepancies, and timing your move.

The detection toolkit gets its own pages: interrogation and how to spend each customer’s five questions, the N.E.T. database and how to search the counter computer, and the detection tools — the Anomaly Lens and the Emotiscope.

The survival side gets three guides: the entity bestiary and the monster rules of the Hunt phase, barricading doors and windows plus the trap arsenal, and the dentist showdown — how to play the shift-13 climax.

The meta side covers scraping together the $250 in wages and savings, surviving the night alone as a solo player, and online co-op — the 3-player design versus the 6-player lobbies. The story and wrap-up guides cover the pet goose, the sheriff, and Midnight town; the three endings and the phone call behind the $250; the BETA Endless Mode waiting after clearing the story; the thinking behind all 10 achievements; controls and settings for interaction, voice, and graphics; the FAQ on price, platforms, and update cadence; and the minimum and recommended PC requirements.

The Core Loop in One Sentence#

Open the doors → serve customers → vet every single one (ID, N.E.T. records, up to 5 questions) → if one is a doppelganger, deal with it before it leaves the store → any you miss come back after closing → barricade doors and windows, set traps, hide, and live until dawn → then put the night’s earnings toward the pet goose’s surgery.

Two loops run in parallel. The economy loop asks you to run the shop well and push the night’s revenue past the quota — $30 on shift 1, climbing all the way to $80 by shift 13.

The identity loop asks you to confirm, before letting anyone walk out, that they are not a doppelganger. Both loops share the same stretch of time and the same counter — that is where all of this game’s tension comes from.

Handling Doppelgangers: the Line Is Leaving, Not Paying#

Steam’s official description says to confirm identity “before letting them leave.” In other words, the deadline for dealing with a doppelganger is the customer leaving the store, not completing payment.

Community guides (allthings.how) even distill this into a counterintuitive play: let the doppelganger finish a normal transaction and take its money first, then eliminate it while it is still inside — you keep the revenue, and it never reaches the outside world.

We do not recommend that new players deliberately play this way, but the widely repeated claim that “you must act before checkout” does not match the official wording or community testing, so it is corrected here.

Two Kinds of Money, and Only One Saves the Pet#

Category Source Use
Shop funds Sales revenue Buying weapons, traps, and other supplies for running and defending the store
Personal funds A flat $10 wage per shift, plus a cut of 10% of store revenue on everything past the quota The $250 pet surgery fee counts only this

In the story line, your pet goose needs a $250 surgery: after shift 10, the vet warns that the medication is about to stop working, and the operation must happen within three days.

How you scrape that money together, and whether you call Sheriff Clyde for help after shift 12, together decide which of the three endings you get — the wages-and-savings and three-endings sub-guides cover both branches in detail.

Getting-Started Essentials#

  1. Vet every customer in the same order: scan the ID → read the N.E.T. record → compare it against the person → ask questions (up to 5) → make the call.
  2. When someone pulls up for gas, remember: the Anomaly Lens does not work on drivers — drivers need the Emotiscope, which unlocks at shift 6.
  3. Weapons must be bought on the computer in advance to appear in the Hunt-phase arsenal — don’t wait for the Hunt to start before realizing you are holding only the starter pistol.
  4. Blood-moon nights always trigger a Hunt, and even a perfect defense can’t avoid it — have boards and traps ready during business hours.
  5. When unsure, let the customer go: killing a real human costs you that transaction’s revenue, while missing a doppelganger only leads to a defense fight you can play through.
  6. Never shoot at Sheriff Clyde Dawson: killing the human Clyde voids all three ending achievements.
  • Phasmophobia — co-op horror about identifying what a presence is before you dare act on it
  • Lethal Company — co-op horror built on a quota-chasing work loop, the same engine of tension as the shift quotas
  • Escape the Backrooms — co-op survival horror about evading entities that should not exist
  • Dead by Daylight — hide-and-survive horror where one mistake puts the hunter right on top of you
