Dead by Daylight Guide#
Dead by Daylight is the asymmetric multiplayer horror survival game developed by Behaviour Interactive. Four survivors face off against a single killer across randomly generated maps, repairing generators to power the exit gates. This guide covers killer evaluations, survivor techniques, perk loadouts, and map strategy in full.

Core Gameplay#
The core loop of Dead by Daylight revolves around survivors repairing generators and the killer hunting survivors down.
| Role | Objective | Key Mechanics |
|---|---|---|
| Survivor | Repair 5 generators → open the exit gates | Stealth, looping the killer, rescues, repairs |
| Killer | Sacrifice all 4 survivors on hooks | Chasing, map control, patrolling, camping |
Game Overview#
Dead by Daylight puts you in two opposing seats at once: prey and hunter. As a survivor, you constantly weigh repairing generators against rescuing, healing, and running; as the killer, you balance tracking, patrolling, and applying pressure. Everything on the map — generators, hooks, pallets, windows, fog, and noise — feeds into a tight psychological duel.
The appeal lies in the asymmetry itself. Four players and one player command completely different resources, information, and stamina, so every match hinges on whether improvised teamwork holds up, or whether the killer can tear the defense apart one survivor at a time before time runs out.
Core Systems#
Survivor Objective System#
Every match spawns a number of generator spots across the map, and once all repairs are done the exit gates can be powered. The repair line and the survival line check each other:
- Repair generators — the earlier the repairs, the earlier the gates open.
- Rescue and healing — one teammate’s mistake on the hook drags down the whole team’s tempo.
- Escape off the hook — wriggling free or being saved in time is a skill of its own.
Killer Objective System#
- Hook the survivors: one down puts a survivor on a bleeding-out timer.
- Control the tempo: force survivors to stop repairing and go rescue or heal instead.
- Close out the endgame: when the gates light up and everyone sprints for the exit, that final phase is where the whole match gets decided.
Perk System#
The perk system is the deepest part of Dead by Daylight. Every character has unique perks, plus a shared general perk pool, and the number of perks you can equip in a match is fixed — so choices matter more than collection.
| Side | Perk Focus | Representative Directions |
|---|---|---|
| Survivors | Survival, healing, rescue, repairs, information | Self-recovery, faster rescues, killer detection |
| Killers | Tracking, detection, pressure, resource denial | Locating targets, slowdown traps, faster pallet breaking |
Perks can be taught to all characters through Teachables, or bought directly with currency in the weekly Shrine of Secrets. A perk build decides how much of a character’s potential actually shows up — the same character plays completely differently with different perk combinations.
Maps and Chase Mechanics#
Maps are randomly assembled from tiles. Generator, pallet, window, and exit gate placements change every match, and each map has its own balance and difficulty curve.
The Chase Loop (Looping)#
Circling terrain, dropping pallets, and vaulting windows are the survival basics:
| Element | Survivor Play | Killer Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Pallets | Drop pallets at dead zones to block the chase | Walk around the long way or break the pallet |
| Windows | Vault for a short burst of distance | Wait at the window and watch for the opening |
| Elevation | Drop from the second floor to change direction | Predict the landing from audio cues |
Review habit: survivors need to keep mental notes of “where the pallets are” and the killer’s Bloodlust timing; that is what turns scattered experience into a system.
Getting Started#
- Pick one starter character as a newcomer and run the full “repair — get chased — rescue” loop until it is muscle memory.
- Moving from “stealth” to “looping the killer” takes time on the survivor side; do not be afraid of dying.
- Your first few killer matches will be chaos; learn patrol routes before you think about camping hooks.
- Use perk builds as reference early on; do not chase whatever is meta — take what works for you.
- Keep an eye on both sacrifice progress and generator progress; do not tunnel one person with your head down.
- Identify the killer and their add-ons; countering the loadout is the most basic step.
- Do not carry the whole team alone; split rescue and healing duties.
- Memorizing hook locations is the fastest way to actually learn a map.
- Steady mindset first: getting caught is normal, and that countdown is where the learning starts.
- Watch the balance patch each chapter — the “new killer” is often overtuned right after release.
- Use custom matches to drill mechanics and public matches to test your composure.
