Open Maps Guide#
This page covers the three large-scale maps among the nine launch maps. Open maps are the home of vehicle play: tanks, helicopters, and jets reach maximum value here, and infantry must learn to survive between waves of steel.
Liberation Peak#
Map Layout#
A mountain fortress scene where open slopes and high ground dominate the terrain. This is the golden map for sniper and observation spots — long sightlines cut across the whole map.
How to Play It#
| Faction Perspective | Key Points |
|---|---|
| Attacker | The slopes are a kill zone — clear the high ground before pushing, or use vehicle smoke to screen a slope assault |
| Defender | The high ground is your asset, but the sky belongs to enemy helicopters — every defense needs anti-air awareness |
| Sniper spot | Long sightlines span the entire map; the one-shot-one-position discipline matters most here |
| Vehicles | Helicopters have huge maneuvering room; ground tanks should push from reverse slopes |
Class Recommendations#
- Recon plus laser target designator: the slope terrain doubles the value of every mark
- Engineer: helicopter threat density is high, and rocket launchers are most efficient against hovering targets
Operation Firestorm#
Map Layout#
The remaster of the classic Battlefield 3 map — an open desert industrial zone: refinery facilities, tank farms, and long straight highways. Veterans’ shared memory: this is the series’ holy ground for vehicle warfare.
How to Play It#
| Element | Key Points |
|---|---|
| Tank lanes | Tank duels in the open are the main theme; earn side-on angles using storage tanks and buildings |
| Long sightlines | The desert is bare, so snipers and recon hold the center line |
| Facility area | Building interiors are infantry refuge and anti-tank positions |
| Airspace | The big sky favors helicopters and jets alike, making anti-air positions extremely valuable |
Legacy and the Meaning of the Remaster#
Firestorm is one of the most beloved maps in series history, and the remaster’s point is rebuilding it with this game’s destruction system: the fixed cover veterans remember is now blow-apart-able — the map’s “classic playbook” gets rewritten by the destruction system in this title.
Mirak Valley#
Map Layout#
The largest launch map. Valley terrain plus the full vehicle lineup make it the signature map for this game’s “all-out war” experience. Infantry are a minority in Mirak Valley; coordination and vehicle awareness decide the outcome.
How to Play It#
| Unit | Discipline |
|---|---|
| Tanks | Push with the team plus reverse-slope discipline; the valley’s depth makes flanking routes very long |
| Helicopters | Valley terrain is natural cover — fly in hugging the valley floor |
| Infantry | Stick with vehicles, never cross open ground alone — the valley’s engagement distances are brutal on foot |
| Recon | Ridge-line observation spots; use drones to open valley-floor visibility |
| Anti-air | Hold air superiority over the valley; for anti-air positioning see Anti-Air Vehicles and Season Balance |
Shared Discipline Across the Three Maps#
Infantry Survival Rules#
- Hug the vehicles: infantry crossing open ground alone on an open map are live targets — follow friendly armor or reverse-slope routes
- Smoke beats healing: when pinned by long-range fire in the open, smoke is your only guarantee of a reposition
- Listen for engines: tank and helicopter engine noise is this map’s heartbeat — hear first, look second
- Reverse slopes are home: any slope where you can “shoot when exposed, hide when ducked” is an infantry lifeline
Vehicle Survival Rules#
| Vehicle | Open Map Discipline |
|---|---|
| Tank | Push only with infantry and anti-air escort; hit sides, never fronts |
| Helicopter | After the Season 5 rocket nerf, output windows are shorter and strafing tempo must be faster |
| Jet | Large maps are its home turf; energy management outranks the urge to attack |
| Transport | Insert from the flanks; never cross the engagement band head-on |
Season 5 Changes Affecting Open Maps#
Season 5’s new Area 51 belongs to the same open-map vocabulary: a desert military base, underground tunnels, the full jet/helicopter/tank lineup, and a collapsible control tower. Think of it as “Firestorm’s urban-remix seat” — full combined-arms ground and air combat plus an infantry infiltration line through the underground tunnels.
Two more balance notes that affect the environment:
- Mobile anti-air buffed (turret traverse +50%, projectile speed 1175→1250 m/s, etc.): the anti-air denial bubble on open maps is harder, making air entries tougher
- Recon helicopter nerfed (splash -30%, cooldown 28→38 seconds): the helicopter’s suppression power drops on valley maps, raising infantry tolerance on slope assaults
Mode Recommendations for Large Maps#
| Mode | Verdict | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Conquest | First choice | Multiple flags plus the full vehicle loop — the complete open-map experience |
| Breakthrough | Second choice | Clear attack/defense direction, suited to organized pushes |
| Class Lock mode | Advanced | Vehicle and class division of labor shows the most depth on large maps |
