Cosmetics and Collection#
Apex’s cosmetics system is split into several tiers, from ordinary skins all the way up to Heirlooms, with a very wide spread in both acquisition difficulty and price. This page explains what each tier is, whether it is worth investing in, and how to choose between limited-time cosmetics.
Cosmetic Tiers#
| Tier | Description | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Common skins | Single color or light recolors | Drops, crafting, store |
| Rare skins | Obvious color and texture changes | Drops, crafting, events |
| Epic skins | Partial model changes | Crafting, Battle Pass, events |
| Legendary skins | Full model and effects rework | Paid, events, premium Battle Pass track |
| Heirloom | Legend-exclusive melee weapon and unique animations | Draw events or long-term accumulation |
| Mythic items | A rarer tier above Legendary | Long-term draws or specific events |
The Visual Language of Rarity#
Rarity in this game is distinguished by color, and that language is shared across skins, attachments, and shields.
| Color | Rarity | Typical content |
|---|---|---|
| White / grey | Common | Basic colorways |
| Blue | Rare | Two-tone with edge outlining |
| Purple | Epic | Partial model changes |
| Gold | Legendary | Full model rework and effects |
| Red | Mythic | Extremely rare special items |
Heirlooms#
An Heirloom is a Legend-exclusive melee cosmetic that comes with a unique inspect animation and intro pose. Its scarcity comes from how you get it, not from performance — Heirlooms do not affect any stat.
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| How to get it | Usually through draw events or a long-term accumulated pity mechanism |
| How common | Very rare; a long-term goal |
| Coverage | Not every Legend has one, and new characters usually wait a long time |
| Actual value | Purely cosmetic, with no attributes attached |
Battle Pass Cosmetics#
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Free track | A small number of cosmetics and currency, granted as you hit progress marks |
| Paid track | Epic and Legendary skins, poses, and loading screens |
| Reactive skins | The look changes once you reach a set level; usually on the premium track |
| Carry-over | Unclaimed rewards do not carry into the next season |
The Season 30 Split 2 Battle Pass has 60 levels in total and includes Legendary skins for Revenant and Fuse, a Legendary Prowler skin, and a reactive R-301 skin at max level.
Event and Crossover Cosmetics#
| Type | Traits | Caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Themed event skins | A clear theme with a unified color scheme | Usually no short-term return after the event ends |
| Crossover skins | Looks tied to other works | Return chance is even lower under licensing limits |
| Store rotation skins | Regular pool cosmetics rotated onto the shelf | They come back, so no need to rush |
| Esports-related skins | Looks tied to competitive events | Some are limited time |
Collecting Trade-Offs#
The easiest way to lose control of cosmetic spending is “completing the set.” Set one clear goal first: only chase the Heirloom of your main Legend, or only buy the Battle Pass — the two strategies differ enormously in cost.
| Strategy | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Pass only | Lowest | Players who want a steady stream of cosmetics on a limited budget |
| Battle Pass + single-Legend collection | Medium | Players with a clear main |
| Drawing for Heirlooms | High | Players who treat cosmetics as a long-term hobby |
| Full collection | Extremely high | Not recommended; do not aim to “collect them all” |
How to Read the Gallery#
The in-game cosmetics screen can be filtered by Legend and shows the rarity and acquisition route of each item. Two things to watch: first, owned cosmetics are marked, so you avoid buying duplicates; second, some cosmetics look quite different in the preview than they do under real match lighting, so it is best to check them once in the Firing Range before buying.
Cosmetics Versus Actual Play#
| Claim | True? |
|---|---|
| Skins affect hitbox size | False — hitboxes are unrelated to appearance |
| Darker skins are harder to spot | There is a real perceptual difference on some maps, but the impact is limited |
| Heirlooms improve your feel | Purely psychological |
| Reactive skins are instantly recognizable to enemies | True; it is a pure display effect |
A Reminder About Spending#
The core game is free, and cosmetic spending never affects balance. Setting a budget ceiling and only buying cosmetics you know you will actually use is the least stressful approach. Limited-time prompts during events manufacture urgency easily, but the actual usage frequency of most crossover cosmetics is far below what you expect when you buy them.
Cosmetic Acquisition Routes Compared#
| Route | Typical rarity | Does it return? |
|---|---|---|
| Match drops and crafting | Common to Epic | Permanent pool, obtainable long term |
| Battle Pass | Epic to Legendary | No return; season exclusive |
| Store rotation | Epic to Legendary | Returns |
| Themed events | Mostly Legendary | Depends on the event |
| Crossover events | Mostly Legendary | Lowest return chance |
| Draw events | Heirloom and Mythic | Extremely hard to return |
Suggested Collection Priority#
| Priority | What to collect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Highest | Legendary skin for your main Legend | Highest screen time |
| High | Skins for weapons you use often | Visible every match |
| Medium | Reactive skins in the Battle Pass | Requires high tiers, but stable value |
| Low | Cosmetics for Legends you rarely play | Bought and basically never used |
| Lowest | Buying purely to “complete the set” | Cost and usage frequency are badly mismatched |
Three Questions Before You Buy#
First, will I still be using this cosmetic a week from now; second, will I still be playing that Legend or weapon a month from now; third, if it leaves the store tomorrow, will I regret not buying it. If two of the three answers are “no,” hold off.
