Skill System#

Skill System

Marvel Rivals divides hero skills into primaries, active abilities, passive abilities, and ultimates. Heroes have no skill unlocks or upgrades; once you pick a hero, every skill is available immediately.

Skill Makeup#

Category Notes
Primary attack Main damage tool; most heroes use firearms or energy projection
Active abilities Usually 2-3, bound to E, right-click, and F
Mobility skills Dashes, jumps, teleports, or flight; often overlap with actives
Passive abilities Work automatically, no input needed
Ultimate Bound to Q, requires charging

Primary Attacks#

A hero’s primary type determines their feel and what you should practice.

Type Practice Focus Example Heroes
Hitscan Tracking aim and headshots The Punisher, Hawkeye, Black Widow
Projectiles Leading targets’ movement Squirrel Girl, Moon Knight
Melee Entry and exit timing Iron Fist, Wolverine, Magik
Lock-on Positioning and target selection Scarlet Witch
Charge-up Charge rhythm Hawkeye

Active Skills#

Mobility#

Mobility skills are the key to judging how hard a hero is to learn. The more mobility a hero has, the more ways they can enter and escape, and the more forgiving they are.

  • Single dash: common on melee heroes; the same tool covers both entry and exit
  • Multi-stage movement: Spider-Man’s web swing, for example; the most mobile and hardest to control
  • Teleport: Doctor Strange’s portal, for example, can reposition an entire team
  • Flight: mostly hover-style, highly exposed to fire

Defensive#

Shields, blocks, and damage reduction. The rule is to save them for the enemy’s burst window or key abilities, not to keep them active all the time.

Control#

Stuns, launches, slows, and binds. Control skills work best as counters to the enemy’s engagement tools and dives.

Passive Abilities#

Passive abilities work automatically and require no input, but they shape how you play. Common types include bonus health, shield regen, movement speed boosts, counter-triggers when damaged, and cooldown resets on kills.

Knowing your opponent’s passives often matters more than knowing your own. For example, against heroes with a passive like “reverts to base form when knocked down,” you need to land full damage within a single form.

Ultimate Skills#

Charge Mechanics#

Ultimate energy builds through damage dealt, damage taken, and kills. The Season 10 balance patch reduced the ultimate charge rate of all Strategists, slowing the support role’s overall engagement tempo.

Types#

Type Effect Typical Users
AoE burst Massive damage in a designated area Most Duelists
Forced engagement Groups enemies up or pushes them off the objective Some Vanguards
Group healing Restores the whole team’s health at once Strategists
Group buffs Grants the team shields or damage amplification Some Strategists
Battlefield alteration Creates impassable zones or forces displacement A few heroes

Management Principles#

  • An ultimate is a resource, not a collectible. Never casting it in a match is the same as not having it
  • The moment after the enemy commits their ultimates is your best window to counterattack
  • Don’t chase the “perfect ultimate”: trading for one core enemy hero is already good enough

Team-Up Abilities#

Team-Ups are Marvel Rivals’ most distinctive mechanic. After the Season 9 rework, the rules are:

Tier Trigger Condition Effect
Base effect Any lineup, always available Grants the hero one extra ability
Enhanced effect Activates when the designated partner is on the same team Upgrades further on top of the base effect

Every hero has two Team-Ups. That means no hero ever needs a partner to gain Team-Up value, and the effect upgrades further when the partner is present.

Team-Up Examples#

Team-Up Members Effect Direction
Gamma Charge Hulk, Black Panther, The Thing Empowers allies’ attacks with gamma energy
Planet X Pals Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Jeff the Land Shark Allies can ride on Groot’s shoulders
Fastball Special Hulk, The Thing, Wolverine Hurls Wolverine across the battlefield
Fantastic Four Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Human Torch, The Thing Psychic shields reinforce one another
Arcane Order Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Magik Mutates the spells of Scarlet Witch and Magik
Stellar Alignment Captain America, Winter Soldier Their charged clashes create a shockwave
Rocket Network Rocket Raccoon, Peni Parker, Star-Lord Summons and teleport devices link up
Hive Mind Gorr the God Butcher, Venom Symbiote claws snatch at enemies

Build Philosophy#

  1. Check for Team-Up potential first when forming a team: two paired heroes on the field together grant both the enhanced effect
  2. Team-Ups aren’t the only criterion for picks: full role coverage matters more
  3. In solo queue, favor Team-Ups whose base effects are strong on their own, since you can’t control teammate picks
  4. A Team-Up’s enhanced effect often changes a hero’s role, and it can be worth building the lineup around it

Cooldown Management#

  • Save long-cooldown skills for key team fights; don’t burn them on wave clear or pokes
  • Track the enemy’s cooldowns: a successful kill usually follows their mobility skill being spent
  • More button presses isn’t better; spamming skills reveals your position and intent
