Achievements Guide#

How the Achievement System Works#

Factorio’s achievements are designed around one core idea — “automation”: most of them reward making the factory do more, run longer, and run faster, not character power. There are no character levels, gear affixes, or platinum trophies — everything exists as Steam achievements.

Key Prerequisites#

  • Achievements only count in the vanilla game. Installing any third-party mod disables achievement unlocks, unless the in-game “Achievements and records” screen confirms the mod doesn’t block them.
  • Some achievements unlock under custom map settings too, but turning biters off makes combat-related achievements unobtainable.
  • Progress is tracked per save — progress doesn’t accumulate across saves (though “production” achievements accumulate within a single save).

Rocket Launch Achievements#

Launching the rocket is the vanilla win condition, and its achievements are most players’ first stop.

Achievement Meaning Unlock condition Difficulty
Rocket Launch Rocket launch Build a rocket silo and launch your first rocket Medium
Rock N’ Roll Rock’n’roll rocket Launch a rocket without a satellite Easy
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish Fifteen hours Launch a rocket within 15 hours Hard
Smoke Me a Kipper Twelve hours Launch a rocket within 12 hours Very hard
There Is No Spoon No spoon Launch a rocket within 8 hours Very hard
Keeping Your Hands Clean Clean hands Win the game without hand-crafting anything Very hard

First Playthrough Advice#

Don’t chase any timed achievement on your first win. A normal playthrough launches a rocket in about 30-40 hours — focus on learning oil processing and bus layouts. With the blueprints banked from that first run, then go after the speed achievements.

Research Milestone Achievements#

Research achievements unlock automatically as you advance the tech tree — play and they pop.

Achievement Unlock condition Difficulty
Iron Throne 1 Research Automation Easy
Iron Throne 2 Research Advanced Electronics Easy
Iron Throne 3 Research Production Science Pack Medium
Tech Maniac Research all technologies (except infinite) Very hard
Computer Age 1 Produce 500 processing units Medium
Computer Age 2 Produce 5,000 processing units Medium
Computer Age 3 Produce 50,000 processing units Hard

A Reference Research Order#

Stage Core tech Matching science
Early Automation, Logistics Red, green
Mid Steel, oil processing, batteries Gray, blue
Late Productivity, robots, rockets Purple, yellow
Endgame Space research, infinite tech White

Production Achievements#

Production achievements count cumulative output within a single save — idle or expand and they trickle in. The easiest long-haul category.

Achievement Unlock condition Difficulty
Mass Production 1 Produce 10,000 iron plates Easy
Mass Production 2 Produce 1,000,000 iron plates Medium
Mass Production 3 Produce 20,000,000 iron plates Hard
Circuit Veteran 1 Produce 1,000 green circuits Easy
Circuit Veteran 2 Produce 1,000,000 green circuits Medium
Circuit Veteran 3 Produce 25,000,000 green circuits Hard
You’re Doing It Right Produce 500 red, green, and blue science packs per minute simultaneously Hard
Automation Engineer Build 1,000 assembling machines Easy

How to Approach Production Achievements#

  • Production achievements are a test of scale: modularize your lines and copy-paste to expand — no special technique needed.
  • Before idling, confirm power and inputs are plentiful, or lines stall on starvation.
  • “500 per minute” needs a separate large line each for red, green, and blue — assemble them from blueprints.
  • View live output rates in the production statistics screen (press P).

Logistics and Train Achievements#

Trains and logistics are Factorio at its most charming — these achievements test your transport planning.

Achievement Unlock condition Difficulty
Automated Rail Transportation Research Rail Easy
Getting on Track Place 100 rails Easy
Train Whistle Deliver 5,000 items by train Medium
Steamrolled Destroy 10 nests by ramming them with a train Medium
Logistics Network Embargo Launch a rocket without any logistic robots Very hard
Transport Belt Madness Transport 10,000 items on a single belt Medium

Building a Train Network#

Element Recommended Notes
Track layout Dual one-way rails One track per direction on mainlines to avoid deadlocks
Station naming One consistent scheme e.g. “Iron Ore Loading”, “Iron Ore Unloading”
Signals Spaced by train length Every merge and junction needs signals
Intersections Reserve overpass space Replace flat crossings with grade separation on busy lines
Scheduling Train schedules Set “leave when full”, “leave when empty” conditions

The Logistic Robot Ban Achievement#

“Logistics Network Embargo” requires completing the game without building a single logistic robot — but belts, trains, and construction robots are all fair game. Tips:

  • Rely on belts and trains for all material transport.
  • Construction robots are allowed — use blueprints to speed up mass building.
  • Rocket part demand is huge at the end; lay wide belt bandwidth into the silo in advance.
  • This achievement pairs perfectly with “one clean playthrough” — avoid repeated new saves late on.

Combat and Defense Achievements#

Achievement Unlock condition Difficulty
It Stinks and They Don’t Like It Trigger your first biter attack Easy
Golem Kill 1,000 biters Easy
Pyromaniac Kill 10,000 biters with fire Medium
Raining Bullets Kill 2,000 biters with submachine guns Medium
No More War Destroy every nest on the map and keep none spawning Very hard
Bullet Hell Have 200 turrets at once Medium

Combat Achievement Tips#

  • Combat achievements require biters enabled — biter-free saves can’t unlock them.
  • A tank is the most efficient nest clearer; kill-count achievements accrue naturally while clearing.
  • For fire kills, farm with a flamethrower late-game — one burst burns a whole wave.
  • For “destroy every nest”, use a small map size, clear everything, and keep your base pollution-free so none respawn.

Speedrun Achievements#

Speedruns are the most prestigious achievements, centered on “launch in 8 hours”.

There Is No Spoon (8 Hours)#

Launching within 8 hours demands a clear rhythm and a practiced blueprint library.

Time window Goal Key actions
0:00 - 0:30 Red science automation Hand-mine to bridge, lay the drill-furnace-assembler trio fast
0:30 - 1:30 Green science + basic bus Land wire and green circuit lines; open a two-lane bus (iron, copper)
1:30 - 3:00 Oil processing Find a field, lay refinery and plastic lines
3:00 - 5:00 Blue science and processing units Build the advanced circuit line, unlock robot tech
5:00 - 7:00 Purple and yellow science Efficiency modules and rocket tech in parallel
7:00 - 8:00 Rocket launch Ignite the rocket part lines, launch complete

Universal Speedrun Strategy#

  1. Blueprints first: store every line design in your blueprint library; stamp them in new saves and skip design time.
  2. Don’t repair old lines: when capacity falls short, build a new module instead of stopping to rework.
  3. Keep defense simple: a few gun turrets + stone walls hold the base; don’t over-invest in defense.
  4. Only necessary tech: skip irrelevant research and beeline the rocket chain.
  5. Target 10 hours first: run a 10-hour win, then naturally compress to 8 as you get sharper.

Timed Achievements Compared#

Achievement Time limit Best for
Smoke Me a Kipper 12 hours First-time speedrunners
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish 15 hours Players wanting a safe win
There Is No Spoon 8 hours Practiced speedrunners

Hard Achievements In Detail#

Lazy Bastard#

Lazy Bastard requires winning with no more than 106 hand crafts. It sits alongside the speedrun as one of the two hardcore achievements.

Keys to success:

  1. Hand almost everything to assemblers: from red science to the rocket, every recipe runs in machines.
  2. Hand-crafting is for “emergencies” only: prioritize hand-crafting assemblers and drills, since they’re the tools that build the lines.
  3. Use the “assembler builds assemblers” trick: one assembler continuously produces the next assembler, avoiding repeated hand-crafting.
  4. Allocate your starting iron plates carefully in the inventory — don’t casually hand-craft any intermediate product.
  5. Watch belts and inserters especially: they’re the most frequently hand-crafted consumables, so automate them first.

Common overage spots: hand-crafting too many belts, inserters, or furnaces at the start. Strictly limit yourself to crafting only when “the line isn’t built and I need one assembler”.

Keeping Your Hands Clean (Zero Hand Crafting)#

Even stricter than Lazy Bastard: zero hand crafting, start to finish. The real skill is bootstrapping — you must first hand-build the starting drill and furnace setup, after which everything is automated. With no hand crafting at all, the rhythm demands are even higher than Lazy Bastard.

Tech Maniac (All Research)#

Research every non-infinite technology. The time depends on factory scale — 100-200 hours or more. Best done at the megabase stage, with purple and yellow science feeding continuously, treating research as a long-term production output target.

A Planned Achievement Route#

Stage Goal Estimated time
Stage 1 First rocket launch in freeplay 30-40 hours
Stage 2 Research milestones + production cleanup 10-20 hours
Stage 3 The 15-hour / 12-hour timed achievements 10-20 hours
Stage 4 The 8-hour speedrun + Lazy Bastard 20-40 hours
Stage 5 Full completion (combat, trains, all tech) 20-40 hours

Space Age DLC Achievements#

Space Age adds planetary exploration and interplanetary logistics, plus a batch of new achievements.

Achievement Unlock condition Difficulty
Interplanetary Travel Build a spacecraft and travel to another planet Medium
Hello Vulcanus Establish a base on the lava planet Medium
Hello Fulgora Establish a base on the lightning planet Medium
Hello Gleba Establish a base on the fungal planet Hard
Hello Aquilo Establish a base on the frozen planet Very hard
Promethean Obtain promethium science packs Very hard
Space Science Produce space science packs Medium

Space Age Achievement Tips#

  • DLC achievements are tracked separately from vanilla achievements.
  • Interplanetary transport depends on your spacecraft — master the rocket and satellite lines in vanilla first.
  • Each planet has unique terrain mechanics (lava, lightning, fungal tides, deep cold) — modular blueprints need per-planet adjustments.

FAQ#

Question Answer
Do achievements need an internet connection? No — Steam syncs locally and unlocks fine offline
Can I earn achievements with mods? No — non-vanilla mods disable achievements; remove them and restart the save
Which achievements are obtainable with biters off? Research, production, trains, and rocket achievements — combat and kill achievements are not
Can the 8-hour achievement be done from a 12-hour save? No — timed achievements count from the save’s own completion moment; start a fresh save
Does Lazy Bastard allow blueprint construction? Yes — blueprints and construction robots don’t consume hand crafts
Must I finish vanilla before Space Age achievements? Not required, but a vanilla win builds the rocket and satellite line experience
Do production achievements survive switching saves? No — production achievements count within a single save

Summary#

Factorio’s achievement system mirrors its core gameplay exactly — it rewards automation, scale, and planning. Progress in the order “first win → production cleanup → timed challenges → hardcore achievements”, and each stage deepens your understanding of the factory. Remember the single most important rule: hand crafting is the enemy of achievements, and automation is their friend.
