Boss Guide#
South of Midnight has exactly 5 mythic-creature opponents — said up front, because a number of older guides listing “eight Legion bosses” with assorted HP values and recommended levels are all fabricated, and this site has deleted such content wholesale per the October 2026 verification. The game has no HP stat tables, no character levels, and no loot tables — boss design centers on handling mechanics, not stat-checking.
Boss Overview#
| # | Opponent | Chapter | Fight Form | No-Hit Achievement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Benjy (Benjy the Tree) | Chapter 3 | Climbing sequence, no actual combat | — |
| 2 | Two-Toed Tom | Chapter 5 | Bell-ring mechanic + segmented health bar + arena changes | Gator Master |
| 3 | Rougarou | Chapter 7 | Classic arena duel, aerial pounces | An Owl for an Owl |
| 4 | Huggin’ Molly | Chapter 9 | Three phases of shrinking floor, throwable solution | Arachnophilia |
| 5 | Kooshma | Chapter 13 | Final boss, waves + dodge segments | — |
Note: Benjy is an original character (the man grown into a tree; his brother is Rhubarb); the other four draw from American Southern folklore. The officially announced folklore roster also names Altamaha-ha and the Honey Island Swamp Monster, but in verified material neither has a standalone boss fight.
Chapter Positions and Replay Pointers#
The five fights sit in the middle and late stretches of the 14-chapter campaign; the official English chapter names below let you jump straight to them on replay:
| Chapter | Chapter Name | Opponent |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 3 | A Big Fish | Benjy |
| Chapter 5 | Everything that Rises | Two-Toed Tom |
| Chapter 7 | A Barman is Hard to Find | Rougarou |
| Chapter 9 | Of Webs and Woman | Huggin’ Molly |
| Chapter 13 | Past Isn’t Past | Kooshma |
Chapter names echo the fights: chapter 9’s Of Webs and Woman points straight at Huggin’ Molly’s web theme, and chapter 7’s A Barman is Hard to Find at Rougarou, whose true identity is a barman. Every chapter is replayable anytime — retry from a checkpoint after a loss, or revisit for review — so nothing in the campaign can be “missed.” Full chapter order and list in the Chapters guide.
No-Hit Achievement Pairings#
The three mainstream boss fights each carry a “defeat + no-hit” achievement pair, official English names below (per the live Steam achievement list):
| Boss | Defeat Achievement | No-Hit Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| Two-Toed Tom | Gator Tamer | Gator Master |
| Rougarou | Owl Do You Do | An Owl for an Owl |
| Huggin’ Molly | Arachnophobia | Arachnophilia |
The universal no-hit approach: the moment you take a hit, reload the checkpoint and start over — the community-validated standard. The three no-hits rank in difficulty exactly as the bosses do; Huggin’ Molly is the hardest.
Fight-by-Fight Guide#
1. Benjy (Chapter 3) — Climbing, No Combat#
The Benjy sequence of chapter 3 is a climbing setpiece with no actual combat. Its weight is dramatic rather than mechanical: the sequence tells the story of Benjy, grown into a tree (his brother is named Rhubarb). The chapter also introduces the giant catfish companion (hence the chapter name, A Big Fish). No combat prep needed — just follow the climb.
2. Two-Toed Tom — Chapter 5#
Mechanic: ring the bell to knock him down and expose the wound, then deal damage; the health bar is segmented — empty a segment and the opponent changes arenas, and the fight resumes in a new space.
Keys:
- The bell is this fight’s key — knock him down for stable damage windows.
- The segmented bar means the fight comes in multiple acts; note the new positioning and mechanics after each transition.
- Don’t get greedy during arena changes — learn the new layout before committing to damage.
3. Rougarou — Chapter 7#
Mechanic: a classic arena duel; the main threat is aerial pounces, and dodging is the core answer.
Keys:
- Aerial pounces telegraph clearly; answer with Perfect Dodges (drills the In the Nick of Time achievement in passing).
- The official strategy explicitly includes Strand Pull / Strand Push interrupts — crowd control pays off hugely in this fight.
- His true identity is the barman Laurent; story context in the Lore guide.
4. Huggin’ Molly — Chapter 9, Widely the Hardest#
Mechanic: a three-phase fight with the floor shrinking as phases advance.
Core solution: throw the jars or explosive barrels scattered in the arena to stun her, then burst during the stun window. Throwables aren’t optional here — they’re part of the loop.
Keys:
- On entry, memorize where jars and barrels spawn; don’t forget they persist as the floor shrinks.
- The shrinking floor squeezes movement; after a thrown stun lands, close in and deal damage immediately — don’t waste the stun.
- This is the hardest of the no-hit runs (Arachnophilia); come back after your build is complete.
5. Kooshma — Chapter 13, Final Boss#
Mechanic: the final opponent is Kooshma, king of dreams and nightmares. The fight’s actual structure is a continuous sequence of Haint waves + red-glow dodge segments, testing overall fundamentals rather than one mechanic.
Keys:
- There is exactly one healing coil in the entire fight — the single most critical verified fact. Plan resources around “one heal for the whole fight.”
- Handle Haint waves like any regular encounter: crowd control + melee; don’t burn stamina on trash.
- The red glow is the dodge segment’s warning — reposition the moment you see it. Greed costs the most here.
- Upgrades banked across earlier chapters (1940 Floof for the full set) cash in here.
- Defeat Kooshma, finish chapter 14’s Midnight, and the completion achievement Stroke of Midnight is yours.
Pre-Fight Checklist#
No levels, no gear — pre-boss preparation is only three things: upgrades, collection, and difficulty settings.
| Item | Verified Basis | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Skill upgrades | 21 upgrades bought with Floof; 1,940 for the full set | Buy everything available before a boss — the outcome depends only on mechanic mastery and upgrade completeness |
| Floof sources | Tin Flips give 5 each; field Floof bundles give 5/10/20; Stigma Knots give 5/15 | The game holds 2,210 Floof total; collect from chapter 1 onward — backtracking costs more |
| Health resources | 9 Health Filaments across the game, in chapters 3-9 | Grab each in passing; have the stock complete before the late bosses |
| Difficulty | Four presets + a custom tier, changeable anytime with no achievement tied to difficulty | Changing difficulty mid-fight restarts the encounter — set it at the checkpoint |
The full Floof economy is in the Upgrade System and Collectibles pages; difficulty and accessibility details in the Difficulty System.
Universal Advice#
| Situation | Advice |
|---|---|
| Stuck | Practice crowd control (pull / push) before touching difficulty |
| Chasing no-hit | Reload on any hit; start with the fight you know best |
| Stat anxiety | There are no levels or gear — outcomes depend only on mechanic mastery and upgrades |
| Don’t want to fight | Accessibility options can skip boss fights with zero story impact |
Recommended No-Hit Practice Order#
The three no-hit achievements increase in mechanical complexity — practice in this order:
| Order | Opponent | Practice Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Two-Toed Tom (chapter 5) | Fixed bell mechanic and clear arena rhythm — the entry-level run |
| 2 | Rougarou (chapter 7) | Arena duel — drills Perfect Dodge and strand interrupts |
| 3 | Huggin’ Molly (chapter 9) | Three-phase shrink + throwable loop — the closer |
Learn each fight’s mechanics in the normal playthrough first, then return post-clear and take all three in one session — cheaper than practicing en route.
Achievement Synergies in Boss Fights#
Beyond the three defeat/no-hit pairs, several achievements progress naturally through boss content:
| Achievement | Condition | Related Fight |
|---|---|---|
| In the Nick of Time | Perfect Dodge | Rougarou’s clearly telegraphed aerial pounces are the ideal practice target |
| Taking the High Road | Interrupt an enemy with Aerial Rend | A verified air-interrupt; works on tough enemies too |
| Clean Hands | Kill a Haint without normal attacks | The Kooshma fight includes Haint waves |

FAQ#
Are there hidden bosses? No. The game’s five opponents are the complete roster; no verifiable hidden boss exists.
Can boss HP be looked up? No. Official values are unpublished; Two-Toed Tom’s segmented health bar is verified structural information (empty a segment, change arenas) — beyond that, this site provides no stat content.
What level is recommended? There is no level system; readiness is measured in upgrade completeness and crowd-control fluency.
Can I change difficulty mid-fight? Yes. Difficulty changes anytime with no achievement consequences; the only catch is that changing mid-encounter restarts it — set it at the checkpoint.
Do bosses have their own achievements? No one-to-one defeat achievements exist. Chapter achievements are named for chapters (e.g., chapter 3’s A Big Fish), and the completion achievement is Stroke of Midnight; boss-specific achievements are only the three defeat/no-hit pairs, tabled above.
