Enshrouded FAQ: Common Questions & Getting Unstuck#
This page rounds up the questions Enshrouded players ask most when starting out and when hitting a wall: buy now or wait for 1.0, what happens after the skill tree reset, multiplayer version mismatches, where to find altar upgrade materials, plus the most common blind spots in boss fights and Shroud survival.
Every answer is based only on officially confirmed information and community sources with their sourcing noted — anything unconfirmed stays out, and the actual 1.0 update is the final word.
Buy Now or Wait for 1.0?#
Enshrouded 1.0 launches on October 15, 2026, leaving early access on Steam and PS5 at the same time, with the Xbox Series X|S version planned to follow in spring 2027.
This page was written on October 14, so the decision window has one day left — pick the situation that matches yours:
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Haven’t bought yet and reading this before launch day | Wait for 1.0: with a day or two left, go straight to the full release and skip the awkwardness of “just mastered your build, now every point resets” |
| Already own the early access version | No extra payment: officials have confirmed the 1.0 update is free for existing players, and early access keys convert into full keys automatically |
| Reading this after launch | Buy the full version — currently $39.99 on Steam |
One note on price: community sources indicate the price rose from $29.99 during early access to $39.99 on September 8, 2026 (single-source price info, not corroborated through official channels).
The “free 1.0 upgrade for existing players” point, however, is consistent across multiple sources, so fence-sitters don’t need to worry about their copy being left behind.
One more yardstick for “does buying now cost me anything”: guide knowledge built over two years of early access stays almost entirely valid in 1.0 — the region layout of Embervale, the five artisans, the altar system, and the 11 bosses recorded in community sources (whether the new 1.0 biome adds new bosses is still undecided) all carry over, and only the skill tree resets. Buying 1.0 isn’t buying an unfamiliar game; it’s buying a completion.
What to Do After the Skill Tree Reset#
Did the 1.0 skill tree wipe erase my points?#
No. Your points are not lost, and the process is automatic. The mechanics, broken down:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How it triggers | Automatically on login — no manual action required |
| Do points get lost? | No — all allocated skill points are refunded in full |
| Which reset is this? | The second in two years: the previous one was Update 8, “Forging the Path”, on April 21, 2026 |
| Will it happen again? | Official line: “hopefully the last one” |
| The official warning | Don’t leave base unspec’d after the reset — the exact quote was that going out without spending points “will feel rough” |
Three practical steps once the reset lands:
- Rebuild the survival base first: movement, stamina, and survival-oriented core skills are top priority, restoring your everyday travel and escape capability.
- Then your main damage line: mages should check the brand-new summoning category first — Advanced Necromancy and Totem Mastery let you maintain more summons at once; archers pick up the three new skills Puncture, Barrage, and Survival Instinct, and should watch for Eternal Arrows with the three upgradeable fire, electric, and bone affixes.
- Prioritize fixed gains: the 22 Tier 7 Eternal Spells no longer consume spell charges, can be upgraded like weapons, and can roll affixes such as reduced mana cost — mana runs tight during the reset period, so max out these one-time fixed-power picks first.
Can I respec on my own?#
Yes. Skill points can be reset at the Flame Altar — a feature that has existed since early access and is a different thing from the 1.0 wipe: the former is you actively reworking your build, the latter a forced refund from the version update. The altar mechanics are covered in detail in the Flame Altar Guide.
Version Mismatch and Multiplayer Issues#
Version mismatch when joining a friend’s server?#
After 1.0, client and server must both be on 1.0, or joining fails. Work through three steps in order:
- Update the client first: let Steam bring the game to 1.0 — an outdated client connecting to an updated server is always rejected.
- Self-hosted or rented server: update the server side first: for self-hosting, stop the server, update the server software, then restart; on rented hosting, switch the server version to 1.0 in the panel — third-party dedicated server hosting has been mature since early access opened in January 2024, and version switching is routine.
- Back up your save before and after the update: officials have announced no server wipes and saves are expected to carry over, but every hosting provider recommends a personal backup before a major update. Full multiplayer options and backup details are in the Multiplayer and Server Guide.
What about crossplay and platform limits?#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can PC and PS5 play together? | No. The official community manager confirmed on October 5, 2026 that 1.0 has no cross-platform play; officials say they are studying adding it later |
| Can PC and PS5 join each other’s servers? | Per hosting providers, no |
| What does PS5 multiplayer require? | A PlayStation Plus subscription (per hosting providers) |
| Can PS5 run a self-hosted dedicated server? | No self-hosting — rented hosting only (per hosting providers) |
| What about Xbox? | The Xbox Series X|S version is planned to follow in spring 2027 |
Where to Find Flame Altar Upgrade Materials#
Where do I farm Shroud Cores for altar upgrades?#
Altar upgrades consume Shroud Cores, with three ways to get them:
| Method | Location | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Explore and collect | Elixir Wells in the Shroud | Collect after defeating the guards; Shroud time is limited, so pull out before the countdown ends |
| Explore and collect | Shroud Roots in the Shroud | Pulling roots also yields Shroud Cores, and clears a safe zone as a bonus |
| Alchemy crafting | At the Alchemist | 10 Shroud Spores plus 10 Shroud Liquid craft 1 Shroud Core; both materials are common drops in the Shroud |
Three extra pointers:
- The crafting route gets overlooked: stockpile Shroud Spores and Shroud Liquid during regular play, then craft a batch when an altar upgrade gates you — it saves repeated treks into high-danger Shroud zones.
- You must rescue the Alchemist first: all five artisans are retrieved with the Summoning Staff and placed at your base; the Blacksmith waits in the first small dungeon west of the starting camp. The rescue order is in Artisan NPCs and Production Chains.
- Tell the two progression tracks apart first: altar upgrades expand your build area, Strengthen the Flame raises your Flame level, and their materials never overlap — the easiest mix-up in the game, see the next question.
Are Strengthen the Flame and altar upgrades the same thing?#
No — two independent tracks with non-interchangeable materials:
| Track | What it expands | Material direction |
|---|---|---|
| Altar upgrade | Build area size: starts at 40×40×40, each level adds 40 per dimension, and level 4 reaches 160×160×160 | Shroud Cores |
| Strengthen the Flame | Flame level, which sets the boundary of the areas you can touch | Specific tribute materials: level 1 Flame materials sit in the map’s south, with Goo, Indigo Plants, and copper ore farther north |
The Flame level track is deeply tied to boss heads. The mapping recorded by the community before 1.0: the Scavenger Matron head and the Fell Wispwyvern head both serve the third altar upgrade (the Matron head doubles as a grapple hook upgrade material), the Fell Monstrosity maps to level four, the Fell Sicklescythe to level five, the Fell Cyclops to level six, and the Fell Dragon Youngling at Howling Peak to level eight, the final one. The full upgrade route is in the Flame Altar Guide.
Boss head won’t drop after multiple kills — is that normal?#
Normal — heads are a chance drop, not a guaranteed one. Three ways to handle it:
- Wait for the respawn and re-fight: bosses respawn on server restarts or world reloads; if the head didn’t drop, run it again.
- Don’t fixate on the head alone: repeat kills also pay out Essence, boss cores (used for Flame level upgrades and rune crafting), legendary runes, and affix materials; Shroud Crystals drop from the Fell Monstrosity and the Fell Sicklescythe and feed legendary weapon crafting (single-source info — defer to the actual 1.0 update).
- Double-dip on every trip: before heading out to re-fight, clear the nearby Elixir Wells and Shroud Roots and bring Shroud Cores and tribute materials back with you — don’t burn a full respawn cycle on a single head.
Boss Fight Quick Fixes#
Can’t hit the Fell Dragon Youngling in melee?#
A classic early-access wall: the Youngling hovers, so melee had to fill the stun bar first and knock it out of the air before any damage window opened.
1.0 improves this: the Youngling now comes down to the ground, melee can attack without stunning first, and officials also fixed the bugs where it healed back to full mid-fight and the fight could freeze. The stun mechanic is still worth exploiting in 1.0 — four mechanics and the answers:
| Mechanic | Answer |
|---|---|
| Reduced damage taken while unstunned | Fill the stun bar with stun arrows or chain-lightning-type spells, and your damage efficiency comes straight back |
| Meteor shower | Meteors can be deflected back at it, and deflecting also speeds up the stun bar |
| Reared-back charged breath | When you see it rear up and charge, run to the far side of the platform — the sweeping Shroud breath can’t reach the other side |
| Wing knockback and Fell Draconian Vulture summons | Reconnect with a movement skill after knockback; clear the summons first to avoid stacking positional pressure |
The fight is set up by the main quest “Slaying The Corrupted Beast”; the nest sits on Howling Peak, the highest point of Embervale, and the head goes to the final Flame Altar upgrade. The full move-by-move breakdown is in Boss Compendium III: Hollow Halls & the Summits.
Why won’t the Cyclops family take damage?#
The three Cyclops variants along the Albaneve Summits line differ wildly in stats — identify the type before you commit:
| Enemy | Location | Weaknesses & resistances |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cyclops | Summit caves: five nests across Everfrore Keep, Howling Peak, Wildwater Basin, and the area near Lake Luma (the fifth has no recorded place-name in current sources) | Weak to fire and Shroud |
| Fell Cyclops | Beside the frozen Elixir Wells of the Summits | Weak to fire and Shroud; resists ice and blunt damage — shelve ice spells and hammer-type weapons |
| Hollow Cyclops | Final floor of the Hollow Halls dungeon, a product of King Gormander’s curse | Not recorded in current sources; defer to the actual 1.0 update |
Two quick judgments: the Cyclops family as a whole takes fire and Shroud damage well, so fire-based tools are the universal answer on this line; against the Fell Cyclops, ice and blunt are free losses — swap your gear before you engage.
Can’t reach the Fell Wispwyvern on the cliff top?#
The Fell Wispwyvern perches on The Pike, the cliff top of Pikemead’s Reach, the capital of Revelwood, and is introduced by the main quest “Reach The Capital, Pikemead’s Reach” — if you can’t reach it, your quest line usually hasn’t pushed to the capital yet, so follow the quests before climbing.
Mechanically, its biggest flaw is the summon animation: it locks into a stagger while roaring for adds, which is the largest damage window of the whole fight. Its head serves the third altar upgrade as a backup to the Scavenger Matron’s — if it didn’t drop here, re-fight there. Entry in Boss Compendium I: Springlands & Revelwood.
Exploration and Survival Stuck Points#
Keep suddenly bleeding out inside the Shroud?#
That’s the Shroud’s timed-survival mechanic: time inside the Shroud is limited, and once it runs out you start taking timer damage. Three counters:
- Set a goal before entering the Shroud: a Shroud run isn’t sightseeing — decide whether this trip is for Elixir Wells, Shroud Roots, or a quest objective, and beeline for it.
- Treat the altar build area as a safe zone: the buildable area around a Flame Altar isn’t eaten by the Shroud — plant an outpost altar at the Shroud’s edge before deep dives and sprint back to catch your breath when the countdown runs low.
- Use recovery mechanics to extend uptime: sitting down to rest (default key X) speeds up health, stamina, and mana recovery, and carrying at least 3 different foods grants buffs. The full Shroud-mechanic playbook is in Area Guide: Springlands and the Low Meadows.
Fishing won’t cooperate, NPCs idle — the chore stuff?#
| Symptom | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can’t catch the fish you want | 1.0 reworked fishing: bait now mostly fishes out of its home biome — cast for a specific fish in the right biome |
| Artisan NPCs won’t work | Check housing first: NPCs need to be Sheltered to craft some recipes |
| NPC or pet stuck inside the base | Officials fixed NPCs and pets getting stuck inside player bases in 1.0, so this kind of jam should thin out |
| The glider feels different | The Updraft mechanic was adjusted in 1.0 in response to post-Update 8 community feedback; better draw distance and fewer loading pop-ins also make long glides smoother |
