Beginner Guide and Opening Flow#

Enshrouded beginner guide and opening flow

The opening of Enshrouded offers huge freedom, but the systems interlock: no rescued artisans means no production lines, no altar upgrades means no building space, and no food stockpile means you cannot absorb the Shroud’s drain. This page gives one proven opening route — follow it and within your first ten hours the base, the production lines and the basic gear will all be standing.

The Opening Roadmap#

Phase Goal Key Actions
First hour Get a foothold Gather stones and logs, place the Flame Altar
Day one Shelter Throw up a simple shelter, craft basic tools and weapons
Night one Expand the roster Rescue the first artisans, unlock production lines
First 10 hours Self-sufficiency Establish food and gear self-sufficiency, light up core skills
Early-game close Enter the Shroud First Shroud gathering run, secure Shroud Cores to upgrade the altar

Step One: Place the Flame Altar#

The Flame Altar is the first proper thing you build in this game, and the foundation of the entire base system.

Item Content
Recipe Only 5 stones, collectible within minutes of spawning
Building zone An initial 40x40x40 cubic space; each tier adds 40 per dimension
Function Buildable-area boundary + fast travel anchor
Durability The altar cannot be destroyed; no worries about it being torn down
Siting tip High ground beyond the Shroud line in the Springlands, near resources with open sightlines

Siting details are expanded in the Base Location Guide; for the beginner phase, remember one line: place it in the Springlands, not in the Shroud, not in a valley.

Step Two: Rescue the Five Artisans#

Artisans are the carriers of the production system. Find and rescue them with the summon staff to unlock their production lines:

Artisan Unlocks Notes
Blacksmith Forge, charcoal kiln and other smelting and smithing equipment Rescued from the first small dungeon west of the starting camp
Carpenter Wood processing plus furniture and building materials lines Early buildings and tools all depend on him
Hunter Leather armor and hunting goods line The main source of early armor
Farmer Crop farming and farm produce line The core of mid-game food self-sufficiency
Alchemist Potions and special materials, can craft Shroud Cores 10 Shroud Spores plus 10 Shroud Liquid craft one Shroud Core

Two rules of discipline:

  1. Housing requirement: NPCs need a Sheltered home before they can craft certain recipes. After rescuing each one, build them a roofed hut first — nobody works standing in the rain.
  2. Order tip: Blacksmith first — he is in the dungeon, closest by, and the smithing line is the bottleneck of your early gear upgrades.

Step Three: Survive the First Night#

Item How To
Shelter Any enclosed space with walls, a roof and a door; forget aesthetics
Lighting Torches or a campfire — light for the night and a monster deterrent
Bed and rest Press X (default key) to sit and rest, speeding up health, stamina and mana recovery
Food Keep at least 3 different foods on you at once to maintain buff coverage

The ‘3 foods’ rule deserves its own emphasis: it is the highest-value habit in the entire survival system. Eat one item from each of the three food slots to stack full buffs before heading out, and the margin of error for Shroud exploration is on a completely different level. The food system is expanded in Cooking, Food and Buffs.

Step Four: First Skill Points and Respec#

  • Early skill points go first into mobility, gathering efficiency and your main weapon; settle on a build once gear matures.
  • Skill points can be reset at the Flame Altar at any time, so misallocated points cost nothing — experiment boldly.
  • At the 1.0 launch all skill trees reset (every point refunded), so new players need not agonize over ‘what if I picked wrong’.
  • The developers have warned: leaving base without spending points ‘will be rough’ — max out basic survival nodes before long trips.

Build guides are detailed in Mage and Summons, Archer and Staff, and Combat Mechanics Deep Dive.

Step Five: Your First Shroud Run#

The Shroud is this game’s signature mechanic: once inside, activity time is limited, and exceeding it means steady health drain. The recommended flow for your first run:

  1. Set out in daylight, with all three food buffs active and enough healing items packed.
  2. Target the nearest Shroud Roots or Elixir Wells — Shroud Cores come from there and are required materials for altar upgrades.
  3. Hit and run: the moment you have the cores, withdraw along your original path; do not linger.
  4. Return to the altar and upgrade, expanding the building zone from 40-cubed to 80-cubed to make room for the workshop quarter.

Early Gear and Weapon Advice#

Item Notes
Melee start Straight swords or axe-hammer types feel stable, and pairing with a shield adds forgiveness
Ranged backup Bow and arrow to pick off enemies on high ground and at the Shroud’s edge, easing melee pressure
Armor source The Hunter’s leather line is the early mainstay; the Blacksmith gradually adds metal armor
Staff play Mage-inclined players can try the 1.0 staff heavy attack and summoner builds — see the build pages
Gear upgrades Equipment is upgraded at artisans; the 1.0 gear cap rises to level 55

The Five Pitfalls New Players Hit Most#

  1. Altar in a valley: the building zone cannot move; a valley-floor base makes late expansion and commuting miserable, and moving house costs far more than siting well.
  2. Not building NPC homes: artisans in the open do not work, and production lines stall outright.
  3. Leaving with a single food: buffs never fill, and Shroud endurance collapses.
  4. Ignoring the skill tree: leaving base with zero points is, in the developers’ words, ‘rough’.
  5. Tanking the Shroud: the Shroud is a timer zone, not a stamina zone; withdrawing before the countdown ends is iron law — tanking it only wastes a death.
