Base Location Guide#
In Enshrouded, moving house is extremely costly — the building zone is bound to the altar’s position, and buildings, farms and storage all live inside it. So the right way to site a base is not ‘pick one perfect spot once’, but phased capital moves: get established in the Springlands early, set up a satellite point in Revelwood mid-game, then move the central hub to the Nomad Highlands late. This page gives the siting logic and concrete decision criteria for all three phases.
The Six Siting Principles#
| Principle | Rationale |
|---|---|
| High ground beyond the Shroud line | The building zone may be Shroud-immune, but a Shroud line at your doorstep means long-term pressure; high ground offers better sightlines and escape paths |
| Short resource radius | Trees, stones, ores and game within gliding radius; gathering commute time determines build speed |
| Convenient glide paths | Launch height determines glide range; a base against a hillside or cliff steps out onto a highway |
| Avoid deep valleys | Poor light on the valley floor, pooled fog, a single escape path — a siting taboo |
| Avoid enclosed ruins | Dense monster respawns inside ruins; building against a ruin is sleeping next to a spawn point |
| Near Ancient Spires | Piggyback on the official fast travel network and double cross-region commute efficiency |
The Three-Phase Capital Move Route#
Phase One: Springlands Main Base#
| Dimension | Details |
|---|---|
| Role | The global headquarters, production and storage hub |
| Strengths | Lowest-risk starter zone, complete resources, and tier-one Flame offering materials right in the map’s south |
| Site pick | High ground beyond the Shroud line, ideally at the seam of a hillside (a natural glide launchpad) and woodland |
| Output | Wood, stone, hides, basic crops; the Blacksmith’s dungeon lies just west of the starting camp |
This base will carry you through most of the early game, so it is worth doing right in one pass: level the land, reserve expansion space, then raise walls.
Phase Two: Revelwood Satellite Altar#
| Dimension | Details |
|---|---|
| Role | Forward camp for the mid-game regions |
| Strengths | Next to the capital Pikemead’s Reach, concentrated quest lines, covering mid-region Shroud gathering |
| Site pick | High ground within the region, balancing glide radius and distance from the Shroud edge |
| Output | Drastically shorter gathering radius for the metals and special materials needed for mid-game gear upgrades |
The satellite point does not need scale: an altar, storage, a bed, and a workbench — enough is enough. Leave the heavy production to the Springlands HQ.
Phase Three: Nomad Highlands Central Hub#
| Dimension | Details |
|---|---|
| Role | Command base at the late-game geographic center |
| Strengths | The Nomad Highlands sit in the mid-to-late band of the continent, with the shortest reach toward the Kindlewastes and the alpine regions |
| Site pick | A highland plateau, away from boss arenas like the Cradle of Dusk |
| Output | Late-game hub, directing the northern mining districts (Goo, Indigo Plants, copper ore) and the desert |
Northern resources are this phase’s core demand: further north yield Goo, Indigo Plants and copper ore, and a hub in the Nomad Highlands pulls the mining districts into daily gathering radius.
Shroud Line and High-Danger Zone Tests#
- Read the fog boundary: the Shroud’s visible edge is the trigger line of the countdown mechanic; site and flight paths both use it as the baseline.
- Keep a double buffer: for the distance between base and Shroud line, leave a buffer roughly equal to one standard explore-and-return run inside the Shroud, so a gathering run does not drag aggro home.
- Triple buffer for boss arenas: leave an even wider buffer around boss arenas so patrol monsters cannot wander to your gate after a world reload respawn.
- Use the building zone as a shield: when you must work beside the Shroud, stretch an outpost altar’s building zone toward the boundary rather than moving the main base into it.
Working With the Glider#
Gliding is this game’s everyday transport; treat it as infrastructure when siting:
- High-ground base + hillside launch = range from your doorstep, halving the time cost of cross-region gathering.
- 1.0 reworked the Updraft mechanic (responding to feedback after Update 8); for using updrafts, see Shroud Mechanics and Survival.
- Where possible, line up satellite altars on the same glide route to form a chained commute of launch — glide — land at spire — launch again.
Common Siting Mistakes#
| Mistake | Consequence | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| First base on the Shroud’s edge | Gathering runs drag monsters home; NPCs are forced off work | Pull the first base back into the Springlands interior |
| First base in a valley floor | Poor light, single path, cramped expansion | Move to the nearest highland terrace |
| Home built against ruins | Respawning monsters raid repeatedly | Leave at least a stretch of open ground |
| Full facilities at the satellite point | Materials and time wasted on duplicate building | Satellite points only get altar, storage, bed, workbench |
| Ignoring spire positions | All cross-region travel on foot | Climb and activate spires before siting |
Lightweight Outpost Altar Loadout#
For outposts in deep Shroud zones and at remote resource points, the standard four-piece set suffices:
- One Flame Altar (building zone doubles as a fog-immune rest area)
- A few storage chests (transshipment for fully loaded gathering runs)
- One bed (moves the death respawn point forward)
- A basic workbench (tool repairs on the spot)
Five zones, farms, production lines — all of that stays at the main base. The outpost’s core KPI is ‘dying costs nothing, and a full load can be hauled out’.
