The Flame Altar System Explained#
The Flame Altar is the hub system of Enshrouded: it is at once the foundation of your base, the anchor of fast travel, and the yardstick of progression across the entire game. The altar level determines the size of your building area, the flame level determines how far into the world you can reach, and every link in this upgrade chain is tied to a boss skull. This page organizes all altar-related mechanics into a single upgrade roadmap.
Basic Mechanics#
| Mechanic | Details |
|---|---|
| Recipe | 5 stones; craftable within the first few minutes of the game |
| Building area | A cubic space centered on the altar; the only zone where free building is allowed |
| Fast travel | Teleport between altars, and between altars and the Ancient Spires |
| Durability | Altars cannot be damaged or destroyed by enemies |
| Respec | Skill points can be reset at the altar |
| Strengthening | Strengthen the Flame is separate from altar upgrades and consumes specific offering materials |
Building Area Size: Level-by-Level Expansion Table#
| Altar Level | Building Area (each dimension) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 40×40×40 | Initial size; enough for an altar, housing, and basic workshops |
| Level 2 | 80×80×80 | A full five-zone layout becomes possible |
| Level 3 | 120×120×120 | Farms and storage can spread out fully |
| Level 4 | 160×160×160 | The building area approaches small-town scale |
| Level 5 and above | Official sizes not published | Defer to the actual 1.0 update |
Upgrading the altar requires Shroud Cores. As of this writing there is no authoritative source for sizes at level 5 and above; community figures vary, and this site neither endorses nor fills in numbers — verify and complete them against the actual update logs once the full release ships.
Three Ways to Obtain Shroud Cores#
| Method | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Direct exploration | Elixir Wells in the Shroud | Defeat the guards and collect; risk and reward scale together |
| Direct exploration | Shroud Roots in the Shroud | See Shroud survival tactics for the uprooting process |
| Alchemical synthesis | At the Alchemist | 10 Shroud Spores plus 10 Shroud Liquid synthesize 1 Shroud Core |
The alchemy route is often overlooked by newcomers: Shroud Spores and Shroud Liquid are both regular drops in the Shroud. Stockpile them rather than spending, then synthesize a batch once the altar hits a level wall — this saves plenty of trips deep into high-risk Shroud zones. The prerequisite is rescuing the Alchemist first — see Artisan NPCs and production chains for the craftsman order.
Strengthen the Flame: A Separate Progression Track#
Altar upgrades expand the building area; Strengthen the Flame raises the flame level — the two share no materials and no progress.
| Flame Level | Offering Material Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flame level 1 | Specific materials from the map’s south | Can be gathered in the Springlands and nearby low-risk zones |
| Higher flames | Materials from farther north | The north yields Goo, Indigo Plants, and copper ore |
Strengthen the Flame is deeply tied to boss skulls: the skulls of most major bosses are upgrade materials for a specific flame level. This chain is also the game’s hidden main storyline — if the flame level stalls, the survival pressure of deep Shroud zones pushes exploration returns into the negative.
Boss Skull and Flame Upgrade Mapping Table#
As of before 1.0, the community-documented mappings are as follows (for boss strategies, see the three bestiary pages):
| Boss | Skull Use |
|---|---|
| Scavenger Matron | Material for Flame Altar level 3; the skull also upgrades the grapple hook |
| Fell Wispwyvern | Material for Flame Altar level 3 |
| Fell Monstrosity | Material for Flame Altar level 4 |
| Fell Sicklescythe | Material for Flame Altar level 5 |
| Fell Cyclops | Material for Flame Altar level 6 |
| Fell Dragon Youngling | Material for Flame Altar level 8 (the final level) |
Two details:
- Skulls are probability drops: A boss has a chance to drop its skull on kill; it is not guaranteed. If it doesn’t drop, fight again — bosses respawn on server restarts or world reloads.
- Two bosses map to the same level: Both the Matron’s and the Wispwyvern’s skulls point to level 3; the exact consumption combination for flame upgrades is subject to the actual 1.0 update.
The Active Altar Cap#
There is a cap on how many active Flame Altars can be placed in the world at once. Community sources say the cap is tied to overall flame level progression, at roughly 10 altars maximum (this figure comes from a single hosting-provider source; defer to the actual 1.0 update).
| Stage | Suggested Placement |
|---|---|
| Early game | 1 altar at the Springlands main base, top priority |
| Mid game | 1 satellite altar in Revelwood to cover central commuting |
| Late game | 1 hub in the Nomad Highlands or Kindlewastes, plus lightweight outposts at resource points in each region |
| When under the cap | Use altars as ‘forward camps’: place one at the edge of a deep Shroud zone and cut the retreat distance in half |
For the full logic of site selection and staged relocation, see Base location guide.
Shroud Immunity Inside the Building Area#
The altar’s buildable area is not eroded by the Shroud. This means:
- An altar at the edge of a Shroud zone can extend its building area toward the Shroud boundary and serve as a pre-Shroud outpost: when the timer runs low, run back into the building area to catch your breath.
- Farms, NPCs, and animals inside the building area are unaffected by Shroud mechanics — you can farm even with the Shroud line right next door.
- But don’t place your main base right against the Shroud line — monsters in deep Shroud zones will aggro and chase you to your door; keep outposts and the main base in separate tiers.
Fast Travel Network Planning#
| Node | Function | Layout Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Main base altar | Production and storage hub | Springlands highlands |
| Satellite altars | Regional commuting | One each in Revelwood and the Nomad Highlands |
| Outpost altars | Footholds for deep-zone exploration | At target resource points or the edge of boss arenas |
| Ancient Spires | Official fast travel points | 5 across the map; climb each to unlock |
Altars and spires together form the complete transport network: spires handle long-range cross-region leaps; altars handle fine-grained coverage within a region. Every time you enter a new region, climb the spire first and place altars second — the difference in exploration efficiency is dramatic.
Quick FAQ#
- Can altars be moved? The building area is bound to the altar’s position, so plan carefully before placing. The number of active altars is capped, so reclaim slots from abandoned altars.
- Not enough Shroud Cores to upgrade? Run both tracks in parallel: gather in the Shroud as usual while the Alchemist stockpiles materials for synthesis.
- Flame level stuck? Check your skull progress and hunt the corresponding bosses per the table above.
- Building area too small? Upgrade the altar to expand it, or raise a new altar to split functions (a dedicated farm zone is a common approach).
