Artisan NPCs and Production Chains#
Enshrouded’s (Enshrouded) production system hangs on five artisans: without rescuing the people, the machines are just furniture. This page covers each artisan’s rescue location, unlock content, and housing requirements, plus how the five production lines combine into one complete supply chain inside your base.
The Five Artisans at a Glance#
| Artisan | Rescue and Location | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Rescued from the first small dungeon west of the starting camp (community sources also place him near Braelyn Bridge) | Forge, charcoal kiln and other smelting and smithing equipment |
| Carpenter | Rescued via the early quest line | Wood processing, building materials and furniture |
| Hunter | Rescued during early regional exploration | Leather armor and hunting goods |
| Farmer | Rescued during early regional exploration | Crop farming and farm produce |
| Alchemist | Rescued during early regional exploration | Potions and special material crafting |
All five must be rescued with the summon staff and summoned to your base. On priority, the Blacksmith comes first: he is in a dungeon, closest to the spawn point, and the smithing line directly determines your early-game gear level. The other four are naturally collected along the quest lines.
Hard Housing Requirements#
Artisans need a sheltered home before they can craft certain recipes. This requirement spawns the basic law of workshop-quarter layout:
- One standalone hut with walls, a roof and a door per artisan.
- Place each home next to its matching workstation to cut pathing distance.
- Keep torches lit inside; night shifts never stall.
- 1.0 has reduced NPCs and pets getting stuck inside player bases, but a clear path to each doorway is still recommended.
When an artisan goes on strike, troubleshoot in this order: is the home sheltered → is the workstation nearby → are they stuck → are raw materials cut off.
The Five Production Lines and Their Divisions#
The Blacksmith Line: Smelting and Smithing#
- Equipment: forge, charcoal kiln and more (community-sourced examples; the full recipe tree defers to the actual 1.0 update).
- Output: metal ingots, metal gear, tool upgrades.
- Role: the midstream hub of the entire production chain — ore in, equipment out. Nearly every early gear-upgrade bottleneck lives on this line.
- Layout: adjacent to main-hall storage; ore gets processed the moment it lands in the chest.
The Carpenter Line: Wood Processing#
- Output: building materials, furniture, tool parts.
- Traits: high demand, low unit price — the busiest line during base expansion.
- Layout: on the forest side, keeping timber movement lines shortest.
The Hunter Line: Leather Armor and Hunting Goods#
- Output: the leather armor series and hunting-related goods.
- Role: the early-game armor mainstay. Before metal armor matures, the Hunter’s leather is your ticket into the Shroud.
- Layout: near the residential quarter, away from the forge quarter’s firelight and smoke (a visual-flow consideration).
The Farmer Line: Crops and Produce#
- Output: crops, seeds and produce, feeding into the cooking system.
- Role: the core of mid-game food self-sufficiency. The three-food-buff rule makes food consumption far exceed newcomer expectations; before the Farmer arrives, you scrape by on gathering and hunting.
- Layout: put it straight into the farm zone, with crop fields, animal pens and beehives arranged around the home. For farm management details see Cooking, Food and Buffs.
The Alchemist Line: Potions and Special Materials#
- Output: potions, special materials, and Shroud Core crafting.
- Key role: 10 Shroud Spores plus 10 Shroud Liquid craft 1 Shroud Core — a way to produce cores steadily without pushing deep into high-risk Shroud zones, the lifeline when an altar upgrade is stuck.
- Layout: near the special-materials section of storage, keeping potions within arm’s reach.
The Production Chain in Full: Raw Material to Finished Good#
A typical gear production chain looks like this:
- Gather: ore, logs, hides and crops each go into their own storage.
- Rough processing: the charcoal kiln burns charcoal and the forge smelts ingots (Blacksmith); the Carpenter splits logs into boards.
- Fine processing: the Blacksmith forges gear and upgrade parts, the Hunter works the hides, the Carpenter produces components.
- Enchanting and crafting: the Alchemist crafts special materials and potions; in 1.0, Eternal Spells and Eternal arrows can also be upgraded and rolled for affixes.
- Equip and resupply: finished goods go into storage; gear up and pack food per the expedition plan before departure.
For raw material distribution and gathering routes see Resource Gathering and Distribution.
Multiplayer Division of Labor#
| Role | Owns | Daily Duties |
|---|---|---|
| Builder | Carpenter line + base construction | Building material resupply, home expansion |
| Fighter | Blacksmith line + gear upgrades | Mining, boss farming for materials |
| Logistician | Farmer line + Hunter line | Food, leather armor and potion resupply |
| Explorer | Alchemist line + Shroud gathering | Stockpiling Shroud Spores and Liquid, crafting Shroud Cores |
When four players each claim a line, base output far exceeds everyone freelancing — a production chain’s bottleneck is always the link nobody owns.
Quick FAQ#
- Rescued an artisan and they don’t appear? Re-summon them near the altar with the summon staff, and confirm a sheltered home exists inside the building zone.
- Missing a recipe from the list? Some recipes only unlock after the corresponding artisan’s home is sheltered — build the house first, then craft.
- Where to check the full recipe tree? Sources have only published sample-level info (for example, the charcoal kiln and forge belong to the Blacksmith); the complete official recipe table defers to the actual 1.0 update, and we will verify and fill it in after launch.
- NPC wandered off? 1.0 has reduced base-stuck cases; if it still happens, look near the altar drop point or restart the world to snap them back.
