Base Building and the Five-Zone Layout#
Enshrouded is a voxel game — terrain can be dug, filled and sculpted. That is both the charm of its building gameplay and the source of newcomer chaos: many players, handed an 80-cubed building zone, try to jump straight to a castle, only to end up with uneven foundations, scrambled zones and striking NPCs. This page offers a proven construction order and the five-zone layout method.
Master Construction Order: Level the Land Before Raising Walls#
| Step | Action | Key Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Plan the zones | Divide the building zone into five blocks on paper or in your head (see below) |
| 2 | Level the land | Flatten the site, cut terraces, dig away excess hillside |
| 3 | Lay the skeleton | Set roads and the main structure first, then fill in functional buildings |
| 4 | Walls and roofs | Enclose zones one by one; prioritize rain cover for NPC homes |
| 5 | Interiors and lighting | Place workstations, add torch light, sort storage |
| 6 | Defense and beautification | Walls, trap spots and landscaping come last |
Why ’level first’ is stressed: on uneven voxel terrain, foundations cause wall gaps, floating furniture and glitchy NPC pathfinding, and rework costs several times the original build. Spend an extra hour cutting a terrace at the start rather than settling on a slope.
The Five-Zone Layout Method#
| Zone | Function | Core Facilities |
|---|---|---|
| Main hall | Altar and communal hub | Flame Altar, main storage, general crafting bench |
| Workshop quarter | Production | Blacksmith, Carpenter, Alchemist and Hunter homes and workstations clustered together |
| Residential quarter | Survivor housing | NPC homes, which must be Sheltered |
| Farm | Food production | Crop fields, animal pens, beehives, cooking station |
| Player home | Personal space | Bed, storage, decoration — style it as you please |
The underlying logic of zoning is flow: main hall in the center (the altar is the fast-travel landing point), workshop quarter next to the hall (the grab-materials-to-craft flow stays shortest), residential quarter quiet and out of the wind, farm on gentle ground ideally by water, and the player home wherever you like.
Construction Details by Zone#
Main Hall#
- Place the Flame Altar in the center or against an inner wall, leaving open space around it for fast-travel landings — in multiplayer, players stacking on the landing point block each other.
- Sort main storage into bins by resource category: wood, stone, metal, food and special materials each get a bin; labeled bins beat one giant junk chest by a mile.
- Keep the general crafting bench next to storage to cut fetch-and-carry trips.
Workshop Quarter#
- Group the five artisans’ homes with their matching workstations in tight clusters: the Blacksmith by the forge and charcoal kiln, the Carpenter by the woodwork bench, the Hunter by hide processing, the Alchemist by the potion bench, and the Farmer on the farm side.
- Each artisan’s home is a hard requirement: a walled, roofed sheltered space — without it, certain recipes cannot be crafted. This is the pit new players hit most.
- Leave a main road between the workshop quarter and the main hall, and keep material-hauling flows out of the residential quarter.
Residential Quarter#
- One independent small room per NPC, complete with bed, door and roof.
- 1.0 fixed NPCs and pets getting stuck inside bases, but leaving a clear path to each door remains good practice.
- Keep the residential quarter separate from the workshop quarter so night lights and noise (visual clutter) do not blend together and make it hard to tell who is striking.
Farm#
- Lay out the four-piece set — crops, animals, beehives, cooking station — as one block; irrigation and sunlight come first.
- The benefit of a standalone farm zone: fire, monster raids and construction never bleed into each other.
- For the food buff and cooking system see Cooking, Food and Buffs.
Player Home#
- Your bed sets your respawn point; a home on high ground has both the view and the mood.
- Decoration freedom is the other half of this game’s building fun — go all out.
Building Zone Expansion and Base Roles#
| Altar Level | Building Zone | Layout Advice |
|---|---|---|
| 1, 40-cubed | Single-room shelter | Enough to survive the first night; don’t linger |
| 2, 80-cubed | Main hall + workshop quarter + basic residential quarter | Your first proper base |
| 3, 120-cubed | Add the farm and a storage loop | The five-zone layout in full |
| 4, 160-cubed | Town-scale planning | Multiplayer zoning, fortifications |
For size data and upgrade materials see the Flame Altar System Guide. When the building zone runs out, the other path is functional split-off: give the farm its own altar and zone while the main base focuses on production — active altars are capped (community consensus puts the cap at roughly 10, tied to Flame level), so confirm your quota before splitting.
Voxel Construction Techniques#
- Terracing: while leveling, cut the land into 2-3 functional terraces; height differences double as natural walls — cheaper than fences on flat ground and better looking.
- Dig before building: mine right next to the base while gathering; a hollowed-out cave converts into ready-made basement storage.
- Leave access hatches: keep maintenance openings in roofs and walls; voxel buildings are easy to remodel, but without a hatch you will be tearing down walls.
- Lighting plan: voxel interiors get dark easily; place torches along patrol routes and leave no pathfinding dead zones.
- Foundation loading: build overhangs within reason — collapses crush workstations and crops.
Quick FAQ#
- NPC not working? First check the home is Sheltered, then the workstation is nearby, then whether they are stuck (reduced in 1.0 but not eliminated).
- Farm won’t plant? Confirm the Farmer is rescued, the fields are inside the building zone, and seeds and tools are ready.
- Construction cut off mid-build at the zone edge? The building zone is a hard boundary; expansion only comes from upgrading the altar.
- How to divide a multiplayer base? Main hall and storage are shared, private homes are zoned individually, and workshops are claimed by artisan group.
