Civilization 7 Controls & Settings#
Civilization VII is a turn-based 4X strategy game, and its “controls” are nothing like an action game’s — there are no combos, parries, or movement tech. What really decides your control efficiency is issuing orders in batches smoothly, finding key information fast, and switching interfaces accurately. This page focuses on Civ VII’s specific control flows and interface navigation, the differences between PC (keyboard & mouse) and console (controller) play, and the settings that actually change the course of a game.
Nearly all Civ VII controls are free of time pressure — slow down and verify tile by tile. The defaults below can be reviewed and rebound anytime under
Settings → Controls; if your version differs, the in-game settings are authoritative.
Map Navigation and Camera#
Civ VII’s map is hex-based, and camera control is essentially “where to look, and how closely.”
| Action | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pan the map | Move the mouse to the screen edge, scroll with arrow keys | Edge scrolling is less tiring for long-distance reads and reduces misclicks |
| Zoom | Mouse wheel | Zoom in to inspect units and tiles, zoom out for the global board and borders |
| Rotate the view | Hold middle mouse and drag | Rotating the hex map makes attack and defense directions clearer |
| Jump to unit/city | Click the sidebar list or the cycle key | Switch quickly between multiple cities to check production and yields |
| View tile yields | Hover over a tile | Read the food, production, science, culture, gold, and faith icons and values |
Unit Selection and Orders#
Units sit on hexes, and select first, then order a tile is the only control path. The orders themselves are few, but each one’s proper use case needs separating:
| Command | What it does | Key criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Point at the target tile | Check the unit’s remaining movement first; cavalry has high movement, and ranged units lose combat power once melee closes in |
| Found a city | Executed by a city-founding unit on a suitable tile | Check whether the tile sits near resources or a river, plus loyalty/distance factors |
| Garrison | Keep the unit inside a city or on a tile | City garrisons gain a defense bonus — pull key units inside before battle |
| Patrol | Set automatic movement | Common for scout-type units opening the map; saves tile-by-tile clicking |
| Skip | Do nothing this turn | Keeps units out of dangerous tiles during a war while waiting for the main force to link up |
| Upgrade | Use once a unit has banked enough experience | Upgrading beats retraining — do not disband old units casually |
Commander Controls#
The Commander introduced in Civ VII is a general unit on the battlefield that centralizes the maneuver of multiple forces. Control essentials:
- Deploy the units that need to cooperate around the Commander — the Commander projects an “adjacent tiles” aura that affects the friendly troops it covers.
- Keep your key damage units (siege, ranged) inside the aura, then park mobile units outside it as a maneuver reserve — separating the two positions is what maximizes the aura’s value.
- Commanders earn experience as nearby units fight; on leveling up you choose a direction in the skill tree (mobility/logistics, or siege/firepower), and which kind of army you build depends on your plan for that Age.
- Never send a bare Commander to the front line — it can be revived in the capital after defeat, but that costs gold and disrupts its upgrade progress.
City Management#
The daily city loop is the highest-operation share of a Civ VII game.
| Panel | Purpose | Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Production queue | Choose units / buildings / Wonders to build | Compare against production and estimated turns — decide between a production push or infrastructure catch-up |
| City Center | Produce the units for expansion and improvement | Decide by the current Age and your expansion pace |
| Happiness | Check the city’s Happiness | Too low drags down output — fix it before it turns negative |
| Districts and tiles | Choose expansion direction and build targets | Look at tile yield types and match them to your current victory route |
| Tech tree / Civic tree | Switch research targets | Re-evaluate priorities before every Age node |
Age Transitions and Legacy Paths#
The Age transition is a control node unique to Civ VII — and an irreversible, pivotal flow of every game:
- Check the Legacy Path objectives — each Age has independent Legacy objectives; completing them earns Legacy Points, and the interface shows progress and available bonuses in real time.
- Handle the crisis event — the end of an Age triggers a crisis event requiring decision after decision.
- Pick the new civilization — entering the new Age, choose the next civilization, keep part of the old civilization’s traits, and put the Legacy rewards you traded for to work.
Control tip: these interfaces appear only once at the Age node — miss them and they are gone for that Age. As the Age progress bar nears the end, open the objectives list early and check how far each Legacy Path still is from completion and how many turns remain to catch up.
PC vs Console Controls#
Civ VII ships on PC and console platforms simultaneously, and the two control schemes differ sharply. Neither way of adapting is right or wrong — it comes down to whether you value “precision” or “speed.”
| Item | PC (keyboard & mouse) | Console (controller) |
|---|---|---|
| Selecting units | Click the unit directly with the mouse | Move focus onto the unit with the stick, then confirm |
| Issuing moves / orders | Right-click straight to the target tile | Navigate to the target tile and confirm — the path is more deliberate |
| Switching city / unit pages | Click the sidebar list | Cycle with the shoulder buttons; speed depends on list habits |
| Scrolling long lists | Mouse wheel | Stick plus trigger cycling |
| Confirming orders | Left / right click division of labor | Separate confirm and cancel keys — watch for accidental presses |
Consoles also generally offer a cursor/focus mode toggle, for adjusting between “move units with the stick” and “hover a cursor to inspect tiles.” If you mispress often or find targeting slow, adjust this option first rather than simply raising sensitivity.
Settings That Change the Game#
These are not eye-candy options — they genuinely alter the rhythm and resource flow of a game:
| Setting | Notes |
|---|---|
| Map size | Sets how many cities can be founded and the enemy cap; Standard / Large / Huge span different ranges (and player counts) |
| Game speed | Tied closely to resource income and unit obsolescence — newcomers should learn the rhythm on Standard speed first |
| Random seed | A fixed seed reproduces the same map, handy for verifying opening ideas or troubleshooting |
| Auto end turn | Skips turns with nothing pending, cutting repetitive clicks drastically |
| Auto patrol | Scout-type units can open the map automatically, saving manual tile-by-tile clicking |
| War / combat popups | Turning them off in wartime speeds the pace up, but you may miss key battle info — trade off as needed |
| UI scale and text size | For split-screen setups or reading distance |
| Colorblind and high-contrast modes | For distinguishing tile and unit colors — adjust to whichever options are available |
Quick Hotkey Reference#
The most frequently clicked actions in Civ VII usually have hotkeys; exact bindings differ by platform and configuration, so checking the current defaults in the controls settings is the most reliable — no memorization required. Prioritize binding these three to comfortable spots:
- End turn — the most-used action in any game; it deserves the most comfortable spot.
- Jump to next unit / next city — saves a huge amount of mouse travel when managing in batches.
- Open the tech tree and civic tree — you will flip between them at every Age node.
Common Control Questions#
| Question | Diagnosis and fix |
|---|---|
| Why won’t my unit move | Check whether movement is spent, whether it is garrisoned or set to skip, and whether enemy forces surround it |
| How do I command in bulk fast | Put core troops under a Commander, or set scout-type units to auto-patrol |
| How do I operate a siege | Surround the city first, set up the siege units (costs one movement), chip the defenses with ranged, then capture with melee — details on this section’s combat page |
| How do I switch cities fast on console | Cycle the city list with the shoulder buttons — usually faster than moving tile by tile |
| Can’t find the option you want | First confirm you are in the right interface level; many settings live under “Game Settings / Interface,” not “Graphics” |
Control mastery in Civ VII boils down to “fewer misclicks, fewer missed reads.” Lock in the high-frequency actions — ending the turn, deploying units, flipping to the tech trees — think through Commander aura positioning, and check the Legacy Paths before every Age node, and your controls will never be the bottleneck that slows your development.
