Persona 5 Royal Characters#
Persona 5 Royal’s cast breaks down into three layers: the nine playable Phantom Thieves, twenty-two Confidants, and the key figures who support the third semester’s story. This page compiles each character’s official English name, starting Persona, combat role, and growth mechanics; for the full rank-by-rank list of Confidant effects, see Confidant guides.
The Phantom Thieves of Hearts#
All nine Phantom Thieves are playable. The protagonist’s Personas are freely fused and swapped by the player in the Velvet Room, while the other members hold fixed starting Personas that awaken gradually with the story.
| Character | Starting Persona | Weapon | Combat Role | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Protagonist (codename Joker) | Arsène | Dagger and pistol | All-round core: his Personas can cover every element, making him the most flexible fit for any party | Name is customizable; the widely cited canon name is Ren Amamiya. Transferred to Tokyo over a false charge; leader of the Phantom Thieves |
| Ryuji Sakamoto (codename Skull) | Captain Kidd | Pipe and shotgun | Physical and Electric damage | Former track team ace whose career was destroyed by Kamoshida; a blunt, fiercely loyal man of action |
| Morgana (codename Mona) | Zorro | Scimitar and slingshot | Healing and support: handles infiltration guidance and recovery magic | A mysterious creature who insists he is human, not a cat; the team’s guide and strategist |
| Ann Takamaki (codename Panther) | Carmen | Whip and submachine gun | Fire damage, can inflict ailments | A quarter-foreign model and one of the victims of the Kamoshida incident |
| Yusuke Kitagawa (codename Fox) | Goemon | Katana and pistol | Ice damage | Star pupil of the painter Ichiryusai Madarame; a boy who gives everything for his art |
| Makoto Niijima (codename Queen) | Johanna | Knuckles and pistol | Nuclear damage and tactical support: Johanna transforms into a motorcycle that carries the whole party | Student council president of Shujin Academy; an honor student carrying her prosecutor sister’s expectations |
| Futaba Sakura (codename Oracle) | Necronomicon | None (backline support) | Support slot: enemy analysis, party-wide healing and buffs | Genius hacker and Sojiro Sakura’s adopted daughter, initially trapped in her own cognitive world as a Palace |
| Haru Okumura (codename Noir) | Milady | Axe and grenade launcher | Psy damage and support | Heiress of Okumura Foods, who joined the Phantom Thieves after her father’s change of heart |
| Kasumi Yoshizawa (codename Violet) | Cinderella | Rapier and submachine gun | Bless and physical damage, with strong mobility in battle | New playable character added in Royal; a gymnast who is friend and rival to the protagonist in equal measure |
Three Characters Added or Changed in Royal#
Kasumi Yoshizawa (Faith)#
A gymnast, the ninth member of the Phantom Thieves, and the flagship new character of Royal. Her Faith Confidant unlocks automatically with the story, and her growth plan hinges on one hard date: reach Rank 5 before December 22, or her Confidant cannot carry over into January of the following year and keep advancing. The penalty for missing it is simply that her Confidant can no longer be leveled for the rest of that playthrough — not a lost true ending. She was never a requirement for the true ending; missing the deadline only costs you her personal story.
Her backstory involves one of the biggest spoilers in the game: she is actually the younger sister, Sumire Yoshizawa. After the real Kasumi died in an accident, she has been living as her sister under Maruki’s cognitive manipulation. That is all we will say here — the details belong to the walkthrough page.
Takuto Maruki (Councillor)#
Shujin Academy’s school counselor and the face of the Councillor Confidant, which unlocks automatically on May 13. He is not a playable character but the central figure of the third semester — and the final boss of the game: in the decisive battle he fights with the Persona Azathoth before ultimately awakening into Adam Kadmon.
His is the only Confidant in the game whose growth decides the story’s direction, and its per-rank abilities were officially announced under the following names:
| Confidant Rank | Officially Announced Ability |
|---|---|
| Rank 1 & Rank 2 | Detox X |
| Rank 3 | Flow |
| Rank 5 | Mindfulness |
| Rank 6 & Rank 7 | Flow Boost |
| Rank 8 & Rank 9 | Detox DX |
| Rank 10 (MAX) | Wakefulness |
Goro Akechi (Justice)#
A boy detective with a private-eye background, holder of the Justice Confidant, who formally joins the party as a playable member in the third semester. He fights with a saber and a ray gun; his starting Persona is Robin Hood, and in the third semester he additionally wields Loki. In the original release his Confidant leveled up automatically with the story; Royal turns it into an active grind: Rank 3 requires Knowledge and Charm both at rank 3, and Rank 7 requires Knowledge at rank 4. If you want to see the bonus scenes after beating the true ending, his Confidant must reach Rank 8 before November 17 — that gate decides the bonus scenes, not whether you achieve the true ending itself.
Key Dates That Decide the Ending#
Confidant building in this game is not just ability grinding — it directly determines which ending you get. Every hard deadline, in chronological order:
| Date | Key Event | Outcome or Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| May 13 | Takuto Maruki’s Councillor Confidant unlocks automatically | The earlier you start, the easier the hard November gate becomes |
| Before November 17 | Councillor Confidant reaches Rank 9 | The sole condition for the third semester; miss it and the story wraps up at the end of December, as in the original release |
| Before November 17 | Goro Akechi’s Justice Confidant reaches Rank 8 | Unlocks Royal’s bonus scenes after the true ending |
| November 18 | Councillor Confidant automatically rises to MAX | The third semester officially begins |
| November 20 | Interrogation run by Sae Niijima | Answer whether you would sell out your comrades: selling out leads to the first bad ending |
| Before December 22 | Kasumi Yoshizawa’s Faith Confidant reaches Rank 5 | Decides whether her Confidant can continue past the new year; no effect on true-ending eligibility |
| December 24 | The “God of Control” in the Velvet Room proposes a deal | Accepting it leads to the second bad ending |
| January 9 (next year) | Maruki’s false reality | Accepting the false reality leads to the third bad ending |
| February 2 | Reconfirm your resolve | Maruki and Goro Akechi appear; the final battle is at hand |
| February 3 | Final deadline for Maruki’s Palace | Missing it counts as a failed operation (time rewinds) and puts the true ending out of reach |
The true ending comes down to one sentence: refuse every deal above and clear Maruki’s Palace by February 3. There are five main endings in total — three bad endings, one normal ending, and one true ending. Royal’s extended scenes after the true ending are an extension of it, not a separate sixth ending. For the exact choices in each branch, see the ending guide.
Confidant List (Twenty-Two)#
There are twenty-two Confidants to build in this game. An Arcana is the tarot face attached to each Confidant, and different faces boost different things: story Confidants advance automatically and never consume your free time slots, while location Confidants require spending an action slot to visit in person.
| Arcana | Confidant | Identity | Unlock | Growth Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fool | Igor | Master of the Velvet Room | Story (automatic) | Oversees Persona fusion and execution; advances with the story |
| Magician | Morgana | Phantom Thief | Story (automatic) | Abilities revolve around infiltration and movement support |
| Priestess | Makoto Niijima | Student council president | Story unlock | Balances combat support and intel analysis |
| Empress | Haru Okumura | Phantom Thief | Story unlock | The rooftop garden can grow recovery consumables |

| Hierophant | Sojiro Sakura | Owner of Cafe Le Blanc, Futaba’s guardian | Story unlock | Coffee and curry are a steady source of everyday buff items |

| Justice | Goro Akechi | Boy detective | Available after story events | Rank-ups carry Knowledge and Charm gates — see above |
| Hermit | Futaba Sakura | Phantom Thief | Story unlock | Backline support and party strengthening |
| Fortune | Chihaya Mifune | Fortune teller in Shinjuku | Location unlock | Assorted divination buffs; invest as needed |
| Strength | Caroline & Justine | Twin wardens of the Velvet Room | Story (automatic) | Complete their fusion requests to rank up |
| Hanged Man | Munehisa Iwai | Owner of an airsoft shop in a Shibuya back alley | Location unlock | Your source for weapons and equipment |
| Death | Tae Takemi | Doctor at a back-alley clinic | Location unlock | Recovery items and medical discounts; outstanding value early on |

| Judgement | Sae Niijima | Prosecutor, Makoto’s sister | Story (automatic) | Advances with the story; central figure of the interrogation scenes |
| Councillor | Takuto Maruki | School counselor | Unlocks automatically on May 13 | Rank abilities above; the key to the third semester |
| Faith | Kasumi Yoshizawa | Gymnast | Story (automatic) | Hard gate is Rank 5 on December 22 |
The Velvet Room is where Personas are fused and executed; the twin wardens Caroline and Justine merge into a single being late in the story — Lavenza.
Other Key Characters#
| Character | Identity | Role in the Main Story |
|---|---|---|
| Jose | Mysterious boy who appears in Mementos | New in Royal: runs the stamp rally, trades collectibles for items, and expands Mementos exploration as you interact with him — see Mementos |
| Wakaba Isshiki | Cognitive scientist | Futaba’s biological mother; her research ties directly into the cognitive mechanics of the otherworld |
| Shiho Suzui | Ann’s schoolmate | One of the victims of the volleyball team incident and a key figure in the Kamoshida story arc |
| Suguru Kamoshida | Shujin Academy PE teacher and volleyball coach | Ruler of the first Palace |
| Ichiryusai Madarame | Japanese painter | Ruler of the second Palace and Yusuke Kitagawa’s mentor |
| Junya Kaneshiro | Black-market financier | Ruler of the third Palace |
| Kunikazu Okumura | President of Okumura Foods | Haru’s father and ruler of the fifth Palace |
| Masayoshi Shido | Member of the National Diet | Ruler of the seventh Palace and the core of the main plot’s conspiracy |
Full strategies for the Palace rulers can be found in the Palace guides.
Easily Confused Characters#
- Makoto and Sae Niijima are sisters: the elder sister, Sae, is the prosecutor who interrogates the Phantom Thieves and the Judgement Confidant; the younger sister, Makoto, is the student council president and a Phantom Thief whose fighting style leans Nuclear and close quarters. Their names differ by a single character in the original script, and both appear at key story moments — keep them straight when reading and writing.
- Yusuke Kitagawa’s given name is written with a character that has a near-identical lookalike in the original script, so it is easy to mistype when inputting or searching; double-check the spelling Yusuke.
- Morgana’s starting Persona is officially localized as Zorro, and Haru’s as Milady; other guides that spell them slightly differently are referring to the same two Personas.
Growth Priority Cheat Sheet#
The game has no official tier system; the tiers below are based purely on mechanical impact:
| Priority | Targets | Mechanical Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Must do for the main story | Takuto Maruki (Councillor) | Reaching Rank 9 before November 17 is the sole unlock condition for the third semester |
| Must do for the main story | Igor (Fool), Sae Niijima (Judgement) | Advance automatically with the story; never consume free time slots |
| Strongly recommended | Sadayo Kawakami (Temperance) | Maid service frees up daytime slots — effectively extra actions per day |
| Recommended | Tae Takemi (Death), Yuuki Mishima (Moon), Chihaya Mifune (Fortune) | Item supplies, EXP bonuses, and divination buffs; affect efficiency only, never the ending |
| Optional | Ichiko Ohya (Devil), Shinya Oda (Tower), Munehisa Iwai (Hanged Man) | Mostly intel, shooting, and gear buffs; can be skipped entirely on a first playthrough |
| Bonus scenes only | Goro Akechi (Justice) | Rank 8 decides the post-true-ending bonus scenes, not true-ending eligibility |
| No effect on the ending | Kasumi Yoshizawa (Faith) | Rank 5 only decides whether her Confidant can carry over past the new year |
Putting Maruki’s November gate at the very top of your priority list is the single most important decision in planning a playthrough; every other Confidant can follow your own rhythm. The combat-side differences between roles (damage, healing, support, defense-breaking) are covered in full on the combat system and Personas pages.
