Persona 5 Royal Calendar — First-Playthrough Confidant Priorities and True Ending Key Dates#
Persona 5 Royal’s calendar runs on a fixed schedule from the April school year opening to graduation in March of the following year — daytime, after school, and evening slots are all non-renewable resources. This page makes no empty “max everything” promises; it covers only the plans that actually work in a first playthrough: lock down the true ending with the hard dates first, then decide where the remaining slots go based on mechanical consequences.
First, Correct Two Widely Circulated Errors#
Error one: you can max every Confidant in one playthrough. The game has 22 Confidants in total, and between story scheduling and stat gates, a first playthrough can realistically advance only 10 to 14 of them. Maxing all 22 is a multi-playthrough goal — carrying inheritance features into a second run to finish the job is far more realistic than stretching yourself thin in the first. Plenty of popular guides write it up as a one-run route, and following them means dropping balls everywhere.
Error two: giving Confidants and activities a star-rated “importance score.” Atlus has never published any rating system; those stars are all guide authors improvising. This page uses mechanically meaningful tiers instead: Must-do (skipping it permanently loses ending content), Recommended (meaningfully improves efficiency or unlocks extra scenes), Deferable (affects no ending; fine to finish in a second playthrough).
Setting the Tone at the Start: Difficulty Only Affects Margin for Error#
Difficulty is chosen at the opening and can be changed at any time in game — don’t agonize. The official line is clear: first-time players are recommended to start on one of the two lowest settings. Difficulty affects combat leniency only, never the story direction, Confidant scheduling, or any ending or trophy condition — there is no such thing as “picking the wrong difficulty and ruining the run.”
| Difficulty (In-Game Name) | Positioning |
|---|---|
| Safety | The lowest difficulty; combat poses almost no threat, ideal for story-only players |
| Easy | Fairly forgiving; series newcomers should start here or on Safety |
| Normal | Standard balance for players familiar with the series’ mechanics |
| Hard | Noticeably stronger enemies; requires serious resource management |
| Merciless | The highest difficulty, minimal margin for error, for challenge seekers |
The Full-Year Hard Date Table: the True Ending’s Lifeline#
This section is the most important part of the page. The third semester is Royal’s soul — the new story, Maruki’s Palace (the cognitive science research institute), and the true ending are all locked behind the dates below, so don’t skip a single row. “Rank” in the table refers to in-game Confidant progress (Rank):
| Date | Event | Consequence of Missing It or Choosing Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| 5/13 | Takuto Maruki’s Confidant (Councilor) unlocks automatically | No action needed; from this day on, put it into a fixed weekly slot |
| 11/17 | Deadline for Maruki’s Confidant to reach Rank 9 | Missing it closes the entire third semester, and the story concludes at the end of December in the original structure |
| 11/17 | Deadline for Goro Akechi’s Confidant (Justice) to reach Rank 8 | You can still enter the third semester, but not the extended Royal Ending scenes |
| 11/18 | Maruki’s Confidant automatically rises to max (Rank 10) | No action needed; happens automatically once the 11/17 condition is met |
| 11/20 | Sae Niijima’s interrogation: whether to betray your companions | Choosing betrayal enters a Bad Ending directly, ending the story there |
| 12/22 | Deadline for Kasumi Yoshizawa’s Confidant (Faith) to reach Rank 5 | Missing it does not affect the true ending, but her Confidant is locked out for the rest of the playthrough |
| 12/24 | The “god of control” offers a deal | Accepting the deal enters a Bad Ending |
| 1/9 | Maruki’s false reality | Accepting the false reality enters a Bad Ending |
| 2/2 | Reaffirm your resolve; Maruki and Akechi appear | Keep refusing to stay on the true ending route |
| 2/3 | Final deadline of Maruki’s Palace | Missing it is a Game Over — time rewinds one week and the true ending is gone |
Two clarifications:
- Kasumi Yoshizawa is not a true ending condition. She only matters for whether her own story line can continue; “miss 12/22 and lose the true ending” is a widespread myth. The true ending hinges on Maruki alone.
- Akechi’s progression has stat gates: Rank 3 requires Knowledge 3 and Charm 3, and Rank 7 requires Knowledge 4. To make the 11/17 deadline, plan your Social Stats backward from early November.
While we’re at it, the ending structure: the game has 5 endings — 3 Bad Endings, 1 Normal Ending, and 1 True Ending; the Royal Ending is an extra scene attached to the True Ending, not an independent sixth ending. Refuse every deal and clear Maruki’s Palace to reach the true ending; the full judgment breakdown is in the Endings Guide.
Confidant Priorities: Must-Do, Recommended, Deferable#
The only tiering criterion is mechanical consequence — not personal taste:
| Tier | Target | Mechanical Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Must-do | Takuto Maruki (Councilor) | Hard true ending condition: reach Rank 9 before 11/17, or the entire third semester closes |
| Must-do | Sae Niijima (Judgement) | Advances automatically with the story and consumes no free slots, but the 11/20 interrogation choice directly decides the story’s course |
| Recommended | Goro Akechi (Justice) | Royal turns him into a full Confidant requiring normal nurturing; Rank 8 before 11/17 unlocks the true ending’s extended scenes |
| Recommended | Tae Takemi (Death Arcana) | The clinic’s medicines determine SP endurance — with enough SP, Palaces take fewer days |
| Recommended | Chihaya Mifune (Fortune) | Bond-boosting fortunes cut repeat visits to the same Confidant, effectively adding usable slots |
| Recommended | Sadayo Kawakami (Temperance) | At high rank, you can still go out on the night a Palace is cleared — again, more slots |
| Deferable | Every other Confidant | Affects no ending content; advance as far as convenient in the first playthrough and finish them in a second run with inheritance |
Two notes: although Sae is listed “must-do,” her progress is pushed by the story, so the only must-do that truly consumes your calendar is Maruki. The value of the rest — classmates, teachers, shopkeepers — is “reducing friction in combat and daily life,” which is icing on the cake; the complete rank-by-rank reward list for each Confidant is on the Confidant Guide page.
The Year at a Glance#
A first playthrough runs from the April school opening to March graduation, with the main story unfolding Palace after Palace on a semester rhythm; once the Shido affair concludes in December and Maruki’s conditions are met, January through March brings the third semester and an entirely new route through the cognitive science research institute. The month-by-month rundown:
| Phase | Scheduling Theme |
|---|---|
| April–May | School opens; the Kamoshida and Madarame story arcs; once Maruki’s Confidant unlocks on 5/13, put it into a fixed weekly slot immediately |
| June–July | The Kaneshiro affair and final exams; fix Social Stat weaknesses and restock supplies before summer break |
| August | A whole free month of summer — the golden window for Social Stats and Mementos progress |
| September–October | The Okumura affair and the story that follows; a Confidant sprint period, building toward the November deadlines |
| November | The tightest month of the game: the 11/17 double deadline and the 11/20 interrogation choice land together |
| December | The Shido affair and Christmas story; the 12/22 Yoshizawa deadline and the 12/24 deal choice |
| January–February | Third semester: two exams, the 1/9 choice, the 2/2 resolve check, and the 2/3 Palace deadline |
| March | The endings resolve; the true ending route plays out here |
If 11/17 is missed, the story concludes at the end of December and everything from January onward in the table is void for your run — which is exactly why Maruki sits in “Must-do” on this page.
How to Spend Each Slot: a Reusable Framework#
Rather than memorizing the weekly class schedule, remember each slot’s priority order. Most Confidants only appear at specific times, and the window is narrower than you think:
| Slot | Priority Order | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| After school | Confidant targets with appointments first; Social Stat activities if not | Classmate Confidants mostly open only after school — when you see the person, pick the person |
| Evening | Night-only Confidants first, then solo activities like reading and bathing | Targets available at night are rare (the clinic, the bar); don’t waste the window |
| Daytime holidays | Palace infiltration first; fill gaps with requests and Mementos | Compressing infiltration days is the single biggest source of Confidant time |
| Before exams | Studying first | Exam results tie into trophy conditions — don’t wing it |
Compressing Palace Time: the Core of First-Playthrough Efficiency#
Every extra day a Palace takes is a slot a Confidant loses. Royal hands you plenty of tools, and compressing an infiltration to the fewest days is both possible and worthwhile:
- Baton Pass unlocks automatically at the start, and guns reload automatically after each battle — fights wrap up much faster than in the original;
- Technical attacks on ailments dramatically increase damage and cut wasted turns;
- Ryuji Sakamoto’s map insta-kill ability (unlocked as his Confidant rises) skips battles with low-level Shadows outright, so travel never stops;
- Takemi’s clinic medicines determine SP endurance — with enough SP, one Palace can be cleared in a single run instead of spread across days;
- Kichijoji’s darts and billiards strengthen Baton Pass and Technical respectively — a one-time investment with long-term scheduling payoff;
- The jazz bar grants teammates permanent growth, a good fit for empty evening slots.
Once you know the flow, infiltrating a Palace in one or two days is achievable; beginners who can’t manage it need not worry — the only principle is to push in early, send the calling card as soon as possible, and leave the spare days to Confidants. Detailed routes for the Palaces and Mementos are in the Walkthrough and the Mementos page.
Safe Rooms and Backup Saves#
Safe Rooms are a Royal addition for resting and saving, scattered through Palaces and Mementos; opening each Safe Room as you enter a map and saving at every new one is the fundamental discipline that keeps a wipe’s damage contained to the smallest possible loss.
Also, this game has many ending branches and clustered decision dates, and provides no completion statistics whatsoever — picking a wrong ending gives you no hint of what you missed. Keep 1 or 2 non-overwriting manual backups every playthrough: save once before each of the four decision dates on 11/20, 12/24, 1/9, and 2/2, and a wrong choice can be loaded back without replaying the whole run.
Exam and Trophy Scheduling Reminders#
Exam results are decided by your Knowledge level; answering class questions correctly builds it up over time, so just slot review sessions into the calendar before each exam. Three trophy conditions tie directly into scheduling and deserve advance planning:
- Score highest in the school on both third-semester exams, 1/11 and 2/11 — this is only obtainable in a playthrough where Maruki’s condition is met, one more reason to protect the third semester;
- All five Social Stats maxed (Pure Perfection) — requires steady night and free slots from April onward; a winter-break cram is not realistic;
- At least one Confidant at max — you’ll pick this up on the way to maxing Maruki.
The PlayStation version has 53 trophies (1 Platinum, 1 Gold, 7 Silver, 44 Bronze); 52 more in-game Awards are housed in the Thieves Den — that set is independent of platform trophies and does not affect the Platinum. The complete lists are on the Achievements page.
Common Mistakes and Fixes#
| Mistake | Actual Consequence | Correct Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Treating the first playthrough as the max-every-Confidant run | Slots spread thin, Maruki falls short, everything collapses | Protect only 10 to 14 Confidants; leave maxing all for a second run |
| Neglecting Maruki’s Confidant | Not at Rank 9 by 11/17, and the entire third semester vanishes | Schedule it weekly from the 5/13 unlock, leaving margin before the deadline |
| Treating Kasumi Yoshizawa as a true ending condition | Sacrificing slots to chase a deadline that doesn’t exist | She only matters for her own story line: Rank 5 before 12/22, or her Confidant locks for the playthrough |
| Spreading Social Stats evenly | Stat-gated Confidant events stay out of reach | Build the stat your current target Confidant needs — raise what you use |
| No backup save before decision dates | A wrong choice sends you back to a much older save | Save manually before each of 11/20, 12/24, 1/9, and 2/2 |
Execute this priority table faithfully and a first playthrough runs remarkably smoothly: Maruki on target, the true ending in hand, and the remaining slots free for whoever you like. Leave unfinished Confidants for a second run and finish them with inheritance — the satisfaction of maxing everyone can wait; it’ll still be there.
