Octopath Traveler 2 Guide#

Octopath Traveler II is published by Square Enix and developed by ACQUIRE (Acquire Corp.), with Square Enix also credited as co-developer. It is the third work in the Octopath Traveler series: the first game launched in 2018 and sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, and a 2020 mobile prequel, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, followed. This entry keeps the series’ signature HD-2D presentation — retro pixel art fused with 3DCG environments — and moves the stage from the first game’s medieval-style fantasy past to Solistia, a brand-new continent built on trade and industrial revolution.

Platforms: PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4 / Nintendo Switch / PC (Steam) | Launch date: February 24, 2023 (simultaneous worldwide)

Language Support#

The game ships with multilingual text but only two voice-over languages:

Item Content
Text languages Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Spanish
Voice languages Japanese, English

Both Simplified and Traditional Chinese text were fully provided at launch, so this generation shipped without players waiting for a later language patch.

The Core Loop#

The gameplay breaks into three interlocking layers:

Layer What it covers
Story layer Eight protagonists each carry an independent main story divided into 3 to 5 chapters; your chosen protagonist cannot leave the party until their story is complete
Battle layer Turn-based battles with up to four party members on the field; the core is Break & Boost plus Latent Power
Exploration layer A day-night cycle changes what towns have to offer; every protagonist has a separate set of daytime and nighttime Path Actions for interacting with NPCs

At the start you pick one of the eight as your protagonist, and that character is locked into the party until their main story is finished. The other seven can be encountered and recruited anywhere in the world, in any order. This rule sets the rhythm of the entire playthrough, and it is the basis for the routing advice in the walkthrough sub-guide.

The Eight Protagonists at a Glance#

The first letters of the eight names spell out OCTOPATH. They are listed alphabetically below, with home regions given exactly as officially published:

Protagonist Job Home region

Ochette Hunter the island of Toto’haha
Osvald V. Vanstein Scholar Winterlands

Character name translations vary from source to source, so this guide sticks to the official English names throughout. Summaries of each character’s story and their narrative rivals are covered in the character-stories sub-guide.
