Disco Elysium Guide#
Disco Elysium is a narrative detective role-playing game with no combat — and it hits harder than any game that has it. You play a police detective who wakes up in a hotel in the coastal district of Martinaise with total amnesia, and while trying to unravel the mystery of a body hanging from a tree in the yard, you get pulled into decades of accumulated political storms in Revachol, a country the old bourgeoisie once called home. There are no swords and no spells here: your weapons are words, memory, and thought, and your enemies are lies, forgetting, and a sense of destiny you cannot resist.
This guide covers origin builds, attribute allocation, all 24 skills, Thought Cabinet development, the check system, the case-solving workflow, and every ending unlock — from your first morning in Martinaise to the truth about the world, so you are never lost along the way.
Game Overview#
Disco Elysium is a narrative-driven detective RPG developed by studio ZA/UM, first released in 2019, with The Final Cut arriving in 2021. It throws out the traditional combat system entirely: the plot runs on dialogue, skill checks, and choices alone.
Core Features#
A completely combat-free design — there is not a single traditional battle in the entire game. Every conflict advances through skill checks, dialogue options, and logical sparring. Your weapon is language, and your armor is thought.
24 skills talking in your head — you hear these inner voices whenever you learn, recall, or deduce something.
The Thought Cabinet — internalize specific thoughts to gain permanent bonuses or change how the game’s rules work; every thought is a re-shaping of your worldview.
Political ideologies — the game tracks four main political leanings: communism, fascism, liberalism, and moralism. Where you stand changes how the script unfolds and which endings you can reach.
What The Final Cut Adds#
The Final Cut brought full voice acting, a new political questline, and additional areas and ending content. Every sub-guide on this site assumes The Final Cut and covers its complete feature set.
The World of Revachol#
The game takes place in the fictional Revachol, a coastal city that once flourished and is now ruled harshly by a new regime after a failed revolution. The story’s main stage is the district of Martinaise — chimneys, a fishing village, an abandoned factory, dockside shacks, and a wave of strikes started by the workers. You are an “outside assistance” police officer dispatched by the Coalition (the source text calls it “the Coalition of the Holy Soldier”), working alongside your partner Kim Kitsuragi, hunting for the truth in a chaotic place full of infighting and undercurrents.
Every space in Revachol is packed with memory and smell: the red-coral docks, the skating rink, the fisherwomen’s hammocks, the abandoned old shopping arcade. The game’s fine-grained prose ferments all of it into something that feels like a real, lived-in world.
Core Systems#
Dialogue and the Debate in Your Head#
There is no traditional combat; conversation is the battlefield. When you talk to NPCs or examine a scene, your skills each pipe up with their own message — some deduce clues, some are barely holding back a desire, some encourage you to pick a fight — but you can act on only one suggestion at a time. Real mastery is judging whose advice to take.
Skill Checks#
Dialogue, touching objects, and scrutinizing a thought all trigger a check: the scene sets the difficulty, and your skill values set the odds of success. Failure is nothing to be afraid of — it brings its own experience and story branches. In Disco Elysium, failure is narrative too.
Thought Cabinet#
- Thoughts are “wearable ideas” equipped in your mind — you can have up to 12 equipped at once.
- Internalizing a thought means “locking it into your brain,” which takes several in-game hours; once complete, it grants a permanent bonus — or changes the rules of a system.
- Some ideas are genuinely dangerous: what they boost is your temperament itself, changing what kind of person your character is.
Skills and Attributes#
The game has 24 skills in total, split across four attributes: Intellect, Psyche, Physique, and Motorics. Every point you invest opens up deeper thoughts and dialogue options, but what you trade away is specialization. New players should push one direction deep first and only consider an all-rounder build on later playthroughs.
The 24 Skills at a Glance#
| Attribute | Skills | One-line role |
|---|---|---|

Skill names follow the English glosses given in the source table.
How a Case Comes Together#
Case-solving in Disco Elysium follows the detective arc of laying a line, walking it, and reeling it in:
- Leads — survey the scene: drawers, bottles in back alleys, scattered debris — every detail can be lit up by the right skill.
- Testimony — work the people: talk one by one to the canteen workers, the officers, the union representative, the fisherwomen; watch their reactions and judge what is true.
- Deduction — cross-reference: the clues you have collected corroborate one another and assemble into possible pictures of the case.
- Lock-in — the decisive dialogue: a key monologue or confrontation decides whether the truth opens up or the case takes a hard turn.

ZA/UM, the Studio#
ZA/UM was founded by the Estonian writer Robert Kurvitz; the studio’s name comes from the Russian “za um” — “beyond the mind.” Its core members came mostly from fiction and the arts rather than traditional game development, which is why Disco Elysium carries such a heavy literary and philosophical streak.
Other work: Kurvitz previously wrote the novel Sacred and Terrible Air, set in the same Elysium universe; Disco Elysium can be read as that novel’s world expanded and retold.
Getting-Started Essentials#
- Decide your direction before spending points — an Intellect build suits deduction, while a Motorics build is riskier and more thrilling.
- Don’t fear failed checks — failure also accumulates experience, and some endings are built out of your failures.
- Let the Thought Cabinet wander before you prune it — pick the key thoughts to internalize and don’t get greedy.
- Give every NPC three extra sentences — many side cases hide inside dialogue that looks irrelevant.
- Touch the world around you early — examine the interactable objects near your character.
- Time will not rewind — but it will not stop for your hesitation either, so don’t be a perfectionist.
- Kim is your engine for understanding the world — when you hit a wall, asking him more questions helps.
- On your second playthrough, take a different attribute direction — you will meet a different Revachol.
Language Options#
The game lets you switch languages at any time, and you can run Chinese subtitles with English voice acting at the same time for a bilingual experience. The Final Cut’s complete English voice acting is one of its headline additions.
This guide works read cover to cover, and you can also jump straight to the topic that interests you.
Keeping This Guide Updated#
This guide will keep being updated alongside the game; The Final Cut and the Switch/mobile versions are covered as well. It is aimed at both Chinese- and English-reading players and spans everything Disco Elysium has to offer: whether you are a rookie officer setting foot in Revachol for the first time or a veteran digging out hidden content, you should find what you need here.
